A little history
Initially, “snood” was not a name for scarves, but for women’s headdresses in the form of a net. They were worn back in the Middle Ages, tucking the hair inside and hiding part of the forehead with fabric. Snoods became especially popular in Great Britain during the Second World War. This is due to the fact that at that time there were strict restrictions on the amount of materials used to make clothing items. Despite the fact that the amount of fabric for sewing hats was not subject to regulation, the women of the country wore snoods, since they required much less material than scarves or hats.
Several decades later, snood breaks into fashion again, only this word is now used to describe tube-shaped scarves that can easily be pulled over the head. There are several more variants of the name that the accessory is called in different countries: endless scarf, endless loop, scarf-loop. In Russia, thanks to publications in the media, the name snood has taken root and is used everywhere.
Features and Benefits
The main feature and main advantage of the snood is its practicality: such a scarf can be put on quickly and easily, it is warm and fits tightly around the neck (and, if desired, the head), and there is no need to ensure that it does not accidentally come undone.
Recently, similar scarves have begun to be adapted for warmer seasons. For example, a snood for men can be made of silk or chiffon, linen or crepe de Chine, which allows you to complement the men's style with a similar accessory in the warmer seasons. A snood scarf can be combined with both business suits and street looks. Thus, among the advantages of men's snood we can highlight:
- Compatibility with a variety of images;
- The model is suitable for both everyday wear and going out (for example, on a holiday or a romantic date);
- The versatility and practicality of a tube scarf allows you to forget that it is currently on your neck (you don’t have to adjust it all the time, it doesn’t tighten your throat);
- Compliance with fashion trends (those who resolutely follow fashion should certainly have at least one such snood in their closet).
How to put a man's collar on his neck? We offer you the most universal methods.
- Circular. Fold one or two loops and then put it around your neck.
- Eight. Make a figure eight out of this accessory, and you are guaranteed a warm collar.
- Experiment further; you can wrap the tube scarf with five or six rings of different widths, if the length allows this. And then smooth it out layer by layer to make it beautiful.
A scarf can occupy the first position in a man's wardrobe. It is most often used to keep shirt collars from getting washed out: a useful find. If you tie the collar correctly, you will give any suit a finished look, and also add the necessary accents to your style.
Different ways to use a scarf will protect you from colds in cold weather and give you a great mood.

Fashion trends
Fashion trends, as a rule, come to the streets of the city from the shows of designers and fashion designers. This is how plain dark snoods came into fashion, pairing equally well with formal jackets and warm sweaters. A striped or checkered accessory that matches a classic black jacket and white shirt will complement your stylish look. Bright contrasting snoods are suitable for diluting looks made in the same colors (for example, with a gray turtleneck and trousers, you can choose a “screaming” scarf that will emphasize the individuality of the wearer).

How to choose a snood
In store windows you can see a variety of all kinds of men's snoods. In order not to get lost in this variety of accessories and choose the right snood, you need to take into account a few simple rules:
- The material should be selected according to the weather. If you need a snood for the cold season, then it is better to give preference to natural materials, as they retain heat for a long time and do not allow wind to pass through (for example, wool). When you need to purchase a lightweight snood, you can opt for cotton, linen or silk products.
- The choice of color depends on the shades that are predominant in the wardrobe. If a scarf is purchased for everyday wear, then you should select it in accordance with the tones of the basic items of your wardrobe, or opt for products in classic colors: black, gray, dark brown or dark blue.
- Take into account personal characteristics. Don’t neglect trying on the product and buy the first snood that catches your eye, which you just liked because of its texture or color.
Fashionable men's snood
Every modern man wants to look stylish and attractive.
A fashionable image is the key to success, speaks of self-confidence and simply improves your mood. At the same time, I want things to be practical, protect against adverse weather conditions, and create warmth and comfort in the heart. An integral attribute of this season's fashion for the stronger sex is the snood scarf. It is also called a pipe scarf or clamp. The thing acquired such names due to its circular shape without beginning or end. In foreign stores, the snood was nicknamed the “endless scarf” because... When folded, it resembles a figure eight – the infinity sign.
The universal accessory has taken its rightful place in the wardrobe of not only women, but also men. Snood is more related to youth fashion, ideally combined with parkas, puffy jackets, and sweatshirts. However, representatives of the older generation are not averse to experimenting and adding something new to their everyday look.
How to knit a snood yourself
If you haven’t found a suitable snood on store shelves, but you really want to have one, you can knit it yourself. In addition, this accessory will be an excellent gift for a man, especially if it is made by hand. For example, you can knit a men's snood or a child's snood.
Before making such a gift, you need to decide in advance on its parameters. It is important to take into account the individual characteristics of a man, namely:
- You need to find out if a representative of the stronger sex is allergic to a particular material. If this is not done in advance, you can accidentally ruin the holiday, since the gift will only bring inconvenience instead of positive emotions.
- Find out a man's color preferences. This is necessary in order not to make a bad choice and not accidentally present a person with a scarf of an unfavorite color.
- Decide on the size of the future product: it can be short or long, warm or not, depending on which option the man will definitely appreciate.
The knitting process will take very little time (if knitting is practiced regularly, then you can do it in a few days), and the impressions of the gift will last a long time. So, to make a tube scarf with a “protector” pattern, you will need about 300 grams of yarn and circular knitting needles No. 6. Then follow the instructions step by step:
- Cast on 180 stitches on both needles;
- At the end a mark is made indicating the end of the row;
- Six rows must be knitted in garter stitch;
- Two rows are done in knit stitch;
- After the second front row is completed, you should continue knitting according to the description pattern.

The main thing is to decide on the color of the yarn and the pattern. Then the product is knitted in the round using circular knitting needles or both ends are sewn together.

Snood, widened downwards
This model of scarf-collar is knitted with a classic and slightly modified elastic pattern, which gives it some advantages: in addition to plasticity, simplicity and convenience, the knitted product does not bunch up.
Snood, widened downwards
- To knit a snood you will need 2 skeins of wool yarn (thread thickness - medium).
- Circular knitting needles 4 mm thick.
- The main pattern is stockinette stitch. We cast on 21 loops and knit 28 rows. We should get a square with sides of 10 cm. This will be our sample.
The dimensions of the finished product are:
- 24 height
- The circumference at the top is 57 cm
- Bottom circumference - 62 cm
We will knit in the round, as most snoods are knitted.
Basic pattern
- We knit the first row with facial loops.
- Second row: alternate 2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches, repeat again with 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches until we complete the entire row.
- Then we repeat the pattern, as in the 1st and 2nd rows.
- We cast on 120 loops, without tightening them too much, and close them in a circle.
- We knit 3 cm with a simple elastic band, alternating 2 knit and 2 purl loops.
- Next we knit with the main pattern described above.
- When the width from the cast-on edge is 16 cm, repeat the main pattern from the beginning, but with additions in the 2nd row: knit every 3 loops and add 1 more loop. In total we should have a circle of 130 loops.
- Next we knit with the same basic pattern, but where we had 2x2 loops, we knit 2x3 loops. In other words, the pattern will now be knitted like this: 2 knit stitches and 3 purl stitches.
- We knit until the final width of the product is 24 cm. Close the loops without tightening the thread too much.
