Knitting snood for men: knitting patterns, photos and videos

A knitted snood can be a stylish and very interesting addition to a man’s fall-winter look. This accessory looks rich and harmonizes perfectly with classic and sports outerwear. Although there is an abundance of this kind of products on the modern market, those created with one’s own hands are valued much higher. Therefore, knitting a men's snood with knitting needles is a good idea for an original gift.

This is not only a stylish accessory, but also excellent protection from winds and cold.

Features of knitting men's snoods

Unlike knitted products for women and children, there are some features of making men's snoods. First, you need to correctly calculate the size and height of the future scarf. Men are more selective in this regard. Secondly, you need to choose the right color. If the female variation is varied in color, from dark to the brightest tones, then for a male accessory a gray, black, brown, blue shade is preferable. Thirdly, you should limit yourself to a minimum amount of decor, including excluding large and overly complex patterns.

Otherwise, there are no definite differences from knitting an identical accessory for women.

Snood models

Scarves are divided not only into light for the off-season and warm for winter, but also into long and short, narrow and wide. A Single Loop, or one-turn snood, can be knitted or crocheted very quickly and is comfortable to wear, as it does not need to be wrapped around the neck. This scarf looks like a trumpet and covers the entire neck. Some models can even be worn on the head instead of a scarf or hood; they are wider.

There are also longer snoods that can be wrapped around the neck two or more times. Scarves that are too long are not very comfortable to wear; they look bulky. The dimensions of a snood with knitting needles in two turns are usually 90-100 cm.

The variety of scarf patterns allows you to create a unique accessory. It can be either delicate lace or rough “grunge” knitting, it all depends on your preferences and personal style.

How to knit a snood for a man with knitting needles

Regardless of the knitting method and the chosen pattern, a knitted men's snood scarf will stand out very advantageously among store-bought counterparts, because it turns out to be unique and inimitable. Despite the fact that the product is voluminous, knitting it yourself will not be difficult, especially with the help of already existing patterns and their detailed descriptions.

A simple men's snood with French rib knitting needles

As with any handicraft, work should begin with preparing the material. For a simple men's scarf-collar, it is better to take thick threads, the composition of which is partially natural. To knit a product with a circumference of 46 cm and a height of 35 cm, you will need approximately 2 skeins of yarn. The color can be chosen as desired, but it is better to give preference to dark gray or black. And since the thread used will be quite thick, and the men’s snood itself will be small in girth, you should use circular knitting needles No. 7.

Attention! Colored pins or threads will also be useful for marking the beginning of the scarf.

The pattern will be taken as simple as “English elastic”. Step-by-step master class describing how to knit a men's snood with knitting needles:

  1. To begin with, cast on 144 loops (under no circumstances should you tighten them, otherwise the product will turn out very rough and will not fit well). After casting on the loop, the circle is closed and a marker (pin) must be attached.
  2. The 1st row is performed alternating 2 persons. and 2 out. loops around the entire circumference (it is important not to twist the row).
  3. The 2nd row starts with 1 purl, then alternates again with 2 knits, 2 purl. up to the last 3 loops. Complete the row with 2 faces. and 1 purl.
  4. The snood is tied in the same way, repeating the 1st and 2nd rows until it reaches the desired length. Close the loops.

This one-turn men's snood will provide excellent warmth in cold weather and good protection from the wind.

Men's snood "Protector"

In order to knit a men's protector scarf, you must first prepare the yarn. It is best to use threads of medium thickness in a gray or brown shade. Circular knitting needles No. 6 are used.

Execution process:

  1. Cast on 180 loops, connect them into a circle (be sure to mark the beginning).
  2. Next, knit 6 rows using the scarf method (all knit on both sides).
  3. Then they begin to knit the pattern.
  4. The weaving is also completed by knitting 6 rows using the scarf method.

The protector snood is based on a fishtail pattern.

Men's snood hood

If girls like models of collars with a double turn, then men prefer the option in the form of a hood. At the same time, a men's snood with this element, knitted with knitting needles, is a little more complicated in its execution technique. But if you have experience working with knitting needles, then knitting such a scarf will not be difficult.

To knit a men's snood with a hood, you will need two pairs of circular knitting needles No. 4 and No. 3, as well as 5 stocking needles. It is better to use mixed yarn (skeins of 170 m/100 g will require 3 pieces).

How to do it:

  1. Cast on 160 stitches, close the row and make sure it doesn’t twist. Also be sure to set a marker at the beginning.
  2. Continue knitting an elastic band 20 cm wide in a circle: alternating 1 knit. and 2 out.
  3. Next, knit according to the pattern: 2 together under knits. and 1 person., continue alternating until the end of the row. As a result, there should be 108 loops left on the knitting needles.
  4. 3 cm further, knit only with facial loops.
  5. Then they begin to form a curve for the bottom of the hood, and also make a cutout for the face. To do this, they make a decrease in the front rows: edge, 2 knits together. with a slant to the left and continue until the last 5 loops (2 knits together with a slant to the right, 2 knits, edge). Purl rows are knitted like this. loops. As a result, there should be 94 loops left on the knitting needles.
  6. The knitting is continued for approximately 22 cm in height using the stockinette stitch, while the total height of the satin stitch before the rounding at the top should be approximately 30 cm.
  7. Next, count 46 loops on both sides (there should be 2 free loops left in the middle). Continue decreasing: do 2 together in 1 person. in the direction from the central loops on both sides. There should be 80 sts left on the needles.
  8. Divide the remaining 80 sts by 40 sts onto 2 knitting needles. Turn them over with the right sides facing each other and close the loops with the 3rd knitting needle: knit the stitches together. 1 st from each knitting needle, then knit knits together. 2 stitches on each needle and pull the resulting loop through the first. All loops are closed in this way.
  9. The hood is turned inside out and the headband is knitted. To do this, pick up 140 stitches along the edge of the cut with knitting needles No. 3, connect the circle and continue: 1st row purl, next 6 rows - rib (1 knit, 1 purl, alternating), 8th row - purl, the next 6 are elastic.
  10. Close the loops loosely, fold the headband in half and hem it from the inside.

This snood hood will perfectly complement a sporty look.

A men's snood with a hood can be knitted as indicated in the detailed diagram with a description and photo.

Tips from needlewomen

Before starting work, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the following recommendations:

  • first of all, be sure to calculate the size of the future product so that the man feels comfortable wearing it;
  • it is also important to choose the right shade and pattern for the scarf; as a rule, “masculine colors” are black, gray, blue and brown;
  • Do not forget about the yarn, it should be mixed or natural, since the main function of the product should be heat preservation;
  • if according to the pattern it is supposed to knit with garter stitch, then the knitting needles should be selected a little larger, and also not overtighten the loops;
  • if there is an elastic band along the edge of the snood, it is better to do it with thicker knitting needles, then the edge will be more elastic and have good stretch;
  • when making a set of loops for knitting a men's snood, when closing the circle, be sure to use a marker (colored pin, thread) to mark the beginning, it is also worth highlighting the place of the pattern;
  • the finished product must be washed in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the selected yarn.

Simple patterns for beginners

A snood scarf with knitting needles (patterns with descriptions will help beginners in mastering patterns) can be knitted smooth, but models with voluminous patterns look more interesting.

Before creating the first products, beginners are recommended to practice knitting ornaments and convex patterns on samples. The most popular and simple patterns for snoods are described in detail below.

Braids

The braid pattern can be simple or complex. Beginners are recommended to hone their skills from the easiest options, gradually moving on to difficult ones. The braid can also be tilted to the left or to the right.

How to knit a pattern of 2 strands tilted to the right:

  1. Remove the edge loop and knit 3 purls, then 2 knits. This knitting algorithm must be followed until the end of the row.
  2. In the next row you need to remove the edge loop and knit 2 knit stitches, and then 3 purl stitches to the end.
  3. Now you need to knit 3 purl loops and cross them to the right, grabbing 1 loop to transfer it to the 2nd knitting needle. There she is placed at work and 1 knit stitch is knitted. Then the front loop needs to be knitted from the front side.

To tie a braid with a left slant, you need to cross in the other direction in step 3.

Openwork

Openwork patterns are suitable for summer and off-season models. To make the pattern textured, you need to knit from cotton, bamboo or viscose threads. Fluffy and bulky yarn is not the best option. This instruction describes a pattern that is often used by beginning craftsmen.

The scarf should look like a diamond pattern with small holes at the bottom:

  1. The initial row consists of 8 knit stitches. At the end you need to knit 2 knit stitches together, tilting to the right, and then make 1 yarn over.
  2. Rows 2 and 3 begin by yarn over and knit 2 together. Then knit 5 separately, knit 2 together and then yarn over and knit 1 again.
  3. Now in the 5th row knit 1 knit, yarn over, 2 knit together. 3 knit stitches separately, then 2 knit stitches together, 1 yarn over and 1 knit stitch.
  4. Row 7 starts with 3 knit stitches, knit 2 stitches together, yarn over and knit knit stitches to the end of the row.
  5. After 2 rows you need to knit 2 knits, knit 2 together and yarn over. Then knit 1, yarn over, 2 stitches together and knit stitches again to the end.
  6. The last row of the pattern ends with knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over. 3 knit stitches, yarn over, knit stitches to end of row.

The openwork pattern on the snood fabric seems complicated, but after knitting the pattern, the sequence of actions is easily remembered.

English gum

English rib can be knitted straight or in the round. The knitting sequence remains unchanged.

Description:

  1. After removing the edge loop, the entire row is knitted with knit and purl loops, alternating them 1 at a time.
  2. The next row starts again with an edge stitch, then knits like this: knit 1, yarn over, purl 1 onto an additional needle. The row is completed by an edge loop.
  3. In the 3rd row you need to make a yarn over and knit a loop from the previous row together with it.
  4. Knit the loops and yarn overs from the bottom row together, make 1 yarn over, and remove 1 loop.

Then the pattern is made up of repetitions of points 3 and 4.

Pearl pattern

A knitted snood with this pattern turns out textured and soft. The most popular pearl knitting option is small. If desired, you can make the pattern larger.

Knitting:

  1. Remove the edge loop and knit alternating the front and back loops through 1. Knit the outermost loop with a purl loop.
  2. Remove the edge loop again. Now you need to knit alternating stitches so that the knit stitches appear above the purl stitches in the bottom row, and vice versa above the knit stitches.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the end of knitting.

It is not recommended to knit a pearl pattern using fluffy and colorful threads. Cotton, acrylic + wool, alpaca are suitable.

Braid with shadow

An interesting pattern that creates the illusion that the entire fabric consists of knitted braids.

How to knit a sample:

  1. Cast on 12 loops and 2 edge stitches on each side. Knit a row with knit stitches only. The next one is purl only.
  2. 4 loops need to be transferred to an additional knitting needle and knit 4 loops.
  3. The next 3 rows are knitted with knit stitches only.
  4. Now knit 4 stitches, then slip 4 and transfer to an additional needle. Knit the next 4 stitches, and then knit 4 stitches on an additional needle, also with knit stitches.

The voluminous pattern is obtained from soft wool threads, alpaca, merino, cashmere.

Double sided pattern

A snood scarf with knitting needles (patterns with descriptions are presented later in the article) is often knitted using a double-sided pattern. The accessory will not have a front or back side. These scarves can be worn not only around the neck, but also as a bolero or as a hood.

A simple version of a double-sided pattern:

  1. For the sample, cast on 25 loops. Remove the edge, knit 1 loop, yarn over, remove 1 loop without knitting.
  2. Next, knit 2 stitches together. Knit to the end, leaving 2 loops. Knit 1 knit, and purl the edge stitch.
  3. The next rows are knitted similarly to the first.

The pattern is suitable for smooth and fluffy yarns. You can knit from colorful threads: melange, assembled yarn, acrylic.

Garter stitch

The simplest pattern for knitting snoods. The product turns out smooth, since the pattern is made from only 1 type of loops - purl or knit. The advantage of garter stitch is that you can use any yarn for the project. Fluffy thick threads, as well as those mixed in color, are suitable.

Large knitting

For a voluminous and large pattern, you will need thick yarn, to which you need to select knitting needles. The fewer meters in the skein, the thicker the thread. The best option for knitting a snood is 50 m yarn per 100 g and knitting needles No. 10.

You can knit either in garter stitch or with patterns, for example, with wide braids and plaits. If a thick thread of a suitable color could not be found in the store, then you can use thinner threads, but you will have to knit in several folds. In this case, it is better to abandon three-dimensional drawings, since the product will turn out to be heavy.

Network

This pattern got its name due to the unusual combination of purl and knit stitches. The pattern resembles a wicker basket made of thin stripes. You can knit with a small braid or a large one. Experienced masters recommend that beginners first pay attention to the last option, as it is easier to master.

How to knit:

  1. For the sample, you need to cast on so many loops so that their number is a multiple of 8 and add 3 more.
  2. The first 3 loops are knitted purl, 1 knit stitch, then 3 purl stitches again. Thus, knit 1 row.
  3. The next row starts with purl 3, knit 5 and purl 3 again. Row 3 is the same as row 1, row 4 is the same as row 2. You need to alternate rows as long as they are needed until they become 7 in height.
  4. In the 8th row alternate: 4 knit, 3 purl, 4 knit
  5. Row 9: purl 3, knit 1, purl 3, to end.

Up to the 12th row you need to alternate rows 8 and 9, and then knit repeating the first 7 rows.

Leaves

The pattern in the form of convex leaves can be knitted in different ways. The leaves can be single or collected in a small bouquet. For snoods, the “divergent branch” pattern is relevant. The design resembles a vine with rounded leaves looking in different directions.

How to knit:

  1. Alternate 1 knit stitch and 13 purl stitches.
  2. Purl 1 stitch, knit 8. 3 loops are knitted together, then a yarn over and a knit loop are made. The last 2 steps must be repeated 2.5 times. Then again 8 knit stitches. Repeat the steps until the row is completed.
  3. Purl 1 stitch, then knit 6. The next 3 are knitted together with a knit stitch. 1 knit stitch and 1 yarn over need to be alternated 2.5 times. Then do a double pull and knit 6 knit stitches.
  4. 1 purl loop. 4 facial. The next 3 loops are knitted together, 1 knit stitch. 1 yarn over Alternate 3 times. Knit 4 again. Thus, you need to complete the series.
  5. The next row is knitted by analogy with point No. 3.
  6. 1 purl loop, 3 knit stitches together. ; knit stitches, alternating 1 yarn over and 1 knit stitch 3 times. Next, finish the row by repeating the steps from the beginning.

This pattern is clearly visible on items made of cotton, bamboo and smooth wool.

Pipe

This is one of the easiest patterns. You will need to knit vertical stripes on the stockinette stitch with purl stitches.

The width of the strip depends on the wishes of the master. In the standard, the “pipe” has a width of 2-5 cm. The main thing is to knit each row identically, without skipping stitches.

Norwegian style

Norwegian style involves a colored pattern on a product knitted with stockinette stitch.

While knitting, you need to change the thread to a different color and perform the pattern in accordance with special patterns.

What designs are typical for the Norwegian style:

  • snowflakes;
  • deer;
  • rhombuses and triangles;
  • small mark;
  • stars.

The color scheme can be any. The most popular combinations of cold and monochrome shades.

The exception is the red or dark burgundy color of the product with white patterns.

Removed loops

The basis of this pattern is elastic. Thanks to the removed loops, the scarf fabric is dense and warm.

Procedure:

  1. To knit a sample, you need a number of loops that is a multiple of 2, excluding 2 edge loops.
  2. In the 1st row, remove the edge loop and knit the entire row, alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch.
  3. In the 2nd row, the front one is brought behind the wall, the purl 1 is removed without being knitted, and so on until the end of the row.

Next, points 2 and 3 are repeated until the end of knitting. This pattern looks good on items made from any yarn.

Honeycomb

The pattern looks like a honeycomb, which is why it has such an unusual name. A snood knitted with this pattern will be soft and light.

How to knit:

  1. 1 knit stitch, then 1 yarn over. 1 loop must be removed without knitting. The procedure is repeated until the row is completed.
  2. The next row begins with a yarn over. The next loop is knitted, then 1 loop is removed with a double crochet.
  3. Knit 1, remove the yarn over, knit 2 knit stitches and remove the yarn over again. Then you need to knit 1 knit stitch.
  4. Slip 1 loop over, then make 1 yarn over and knit the next 2 loops together.
  5. 2 knit double crochets need to be re-done.

Then points 1 to 5 are repeated until the end of knitting.

Wavy pattern

An unusual pattern that will make the “infinity” scarf unique. Experienced craftsmen advise knitting such a pattern, alternating threads by color every 1-3 rows.

How to make a wave pattern:

  1. Rows 1 and 3 are knitted with purl stitches only.
  2. Row 2 should only be knitted with knit stitches.
  3. In the 4th row, 6 loops are knitted together (every 2 loops). 6 times you need to alternate the yarn over and 1 knitted loop to the end of the row.

If you increase the number of yarn overs and loops, the “oscillation amplitude” of the wave will change and the pattern will look different.

Another simple way to give your snood an unusual texture. Each row alternates 1 knit and purl stitch. It is important to place the loops of the new row in a checkerboard pattern in relation to the previous one.

Example: Beginning of row 1 – knit, purl, knit. Beginning of row 2 – purl, knit, purl. The result is a pattern resembling small smooth bumps. The pattern is only suitable for smooth, non-fluffy threads.

Knitting pattern for a long scarf

The most ideal pattern for a long snood is double-sided, which looks beautiful on both sides. If the reverse side of the design is unsightly, then the accessory will have to be constantly adjusted so that the inside is not visible. The “pearl” pattern looks beautiful, as well as almost all types of elastic bands - English, French, Polish. The latter looks the most original.

How to knit a snood in two turns with knitting needles using a Polish elastic band? To make a scarf 100 cm long, cast on 60 to 80 loops on circular knitting needles (depending on the thickness of the yarn) and join the knitting into a ring. The pattern repeat is 4 loops, so the number of stitches cast on should be a multiple of 4.

  • In the first row we alternate three knit stitches and one purl stitch.
  • In the second we knit two knit stitches, then one purl and one knit stitch.
  • The third row repeats the first.
  • The fourth is identical to the second.

Knit according to this pattern until the size of the snood with knitting needles in two turns reaches the desired size according to your idea, ideally 40-50 cm.
