Pattern of a dress in the Greek style to the floor
A floor-length dress makes every girl feminine, elegant, sophisticated, emphasizes her advantages, and hides minor figure flaws.
But they have one drawback - they are very expensive in boutiques. Is it possible to sew a long dress yourself, at home? Of course you can! The easiest way to sew a floor-length Greek dress is that women who have absolutely no experience in sewing and needlework can cope with this task. This option is ideal for summer walks, parties, and visiting. If you still don’t dare to sew a dress yourself, take a look at https://iltanishop.ru, where you can find a collection of women’s clothing for every taste and budget.
Basics of proper combination
If, for example, you like the color ivory, then you can choose for yourself the image of a modern Aphrodite, as in this photo.
The asymmetry inherent to the Greek Goddess of Love can be created in any number of ways, such as with elaborate decorative trim on one shoulder strap, as here.
Or you can simply make a flowing drape on one shoulder, combined with a wide belt at a high waist. In this case, it is advisable to decorate the belt with special luxury; you will get a delightful outfit for the bride, as in this photo.
If you combine ivory dresses with pearl or gold necklaces, bracelets, brooches, then the image of a Greek woman will immediately appear before you.
Modern designers love to diversify antique dresses with different lengths, flounces, contrasting colors, and decor with sequins, beads, and chains. The main thing is feminine dresses, incredibly beautiful and romantic.
In this video you can see how to quickly sew a summer bright Greek dress.
There are many different models in this video based on the style in question.
Necessary materials and tools for sewing a Greek dress
You can design a Greek dress yourself very quickly, having a piece of fabric 3-3.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide - regardless of your figure, because the dress must have drapery. A summer dress should be light and elegant. In order for it to turn out exactly like this, it is worth buying flowing and easily draped fabrics. For example, natural or artificial silk, fine knitwear, muslin.
Also for sewing you will need:
- sewing machine, overlocker (you can only get by with a machine);
- sewing meter, scissors, chalk or soap;
- ribbons, braid, additional accessories.
Scissors must be used very sharp, threads must be matched to the fabric, sewing machine needles - number 75, additional accessories depending on desires and fabric. You will also need pins and decorative cords for drapery.
What materials are used in tailoring?
Delicate flowing fabrics are a priority. These are satin, chiffon, organza, silk and all similar luxurious materials. It is important that the drapery looks luxurious, so cotton, gabardine and various casual fabrics would be inappropriate here. Belts based on the bodice with the same fabric on top as the dress are used as decoration. The images are complemented with artificial precious stones, rhinestones, and small sparkles. Casual chiffon models are not decorated with anything, but are complemented by beautiful expensive shoes and accessories.
Measurements, fabric calculations, pattern making
To properly tailor a Greek dress, you do not need to have any special skills or be a designer. The product can be modeled on the figure. Therefore, a paper pattern is practically not needed, because this type of dress does not involve any difficult moments when sewing, there is no need to make darts and other complex elements. Simply put, the Greek dress pattern is a regular rectangle.
First you need to measure the length of the dress from the seventh cervical vertebra to the floor and multiply the measurement by two. Take a corresponding piece of fabric, mark the middle, and carefully make a small cutout for the head in the center. After this, you need to put the fabric on yourself and start modeling the dress. While working, you need to carefully secure the desired shape using regular pins or taking a thread and a needle. We need to adjust the neckline (deeper in the front and/or back), determine the length of the armhole, and baste or mark the side seams.
What is the Greek style characterized by?
The main features of antique clothing have long been considered to be plain, plain fabric and all kinds of vertical and diagonal draperies. Greek beauties believed that such details make the figure slimmer and more seductive. Today, fashion designers do not hesitate to introduce the Greek style into their collections, since the response from women to such outfits will be many times greater than to other models.
The main features of the Greek genre in clothing:
- drapery at bodice level;
- high waist or lack of undercuts on it;
- flowing materials, most often of natural origin;
- simple cut and silhouette;
- asymmetry in one area;
- muted pastel colors;
- lack of prints and images on the fabric.
In general, the dress may include all of the above details or not have some, but from its characteristic features it is immediately clear that its style is antique.
How to sew a simple floor-length Greek dress yourself
Sewing the dress will take place in several stages, all of them are very simple, but accuracy during work will not hurt.
While working on the product you will need to perform the following actions:
- Thread the necessary threads into the sewing machine;
- Make sure that the edges of the fabric for stitching are smooth and neat;
- Connect the side sections of the dress, leaving a cutout for the arms (the so-called armholes);
- Finish the bottom of the dress: if the fabric is fraying a lot - with a hem seam with a closed cut, in other cases - with a hem seam with an open cut, which is pre-sewn on an overlocker;
- Finish the neckline and armholes of the dress with bias tape or decorative ribbon.
How to sew an elegant floor-length dress in the Greek style step by step
In order to sew a long dress, you will need:
- sewing machine
- sewing meter, scissors, chalk or soap
- textile
- ribbons, braid, additional accessories
- tailor's pins
This model is good because it does not need a paper pattern - if only for greater clarity. The dress is modeled directly on the body, which, by the way, is the classic, “golden” method of sewing Greek dresses, which all great fashion designers have used and continue to use.
First step. Take measurements from the seventh cervical vertebra to your desired length. Multiply the resulting figure by two. This is the total length of the fabric. Width – distance from elbow to elbow. Find the center in the resulting rectangle and make a slot for the neck.
Second step. Carefully put on the future dress, and carefully model the draperies, starting from the shoulders, moving towards the bodice. It is best to secure them at the waist with tailor's pins. In addition, you need to adjust the depth of the neckline and armholes. It is also necessary to mark the side seams.
Third step. Carefully stitch the places where the draperies are secured at the waist and shoulders. After this, sew the side seams. Use braid to trim the neckline of the dress and the armholes. You can finish the bottom of the dress with a simple hem stitch, or you can use an overlocker, if possible.
Fourth step. Sew a belt from the same fabric. You can simply tie it, or you can stitch it in the place where the folds were fixed, thus masking the seam. The dress is ready!
Dress decor in Greek style
The last stage of work is adding decorative elements. Using decorative tape, braid or cord, you can carefully gather the fabric on the shoulders, making them open, add folds, make them larger or smaller.
If there is some fabric left, you can sew a thin belt from it, tie it under the chest and decorate it with a beautiful flower. Then a long floor-length dress in the Greek style will look simply excellent.
What hairstyle to wear with a Greek style dress?
A fluffy ponytail on one shoulder, a lion's mane laid in waves at the back of the head, a classic babette, loose hair in waves - all voluminous hairstyles for long hair will be appropriate. As decorations, you can add various kinds of tiaras, hoops, beads, combs, hairpins, artificial and fresh flowers, and other elements that correspond to the overall style of the image. It is important that the decorations on the head “echo” the decorations on the dress. Various braids and their elements in the hairstyle are also welcome.
The presence of sloppy curls, sloppy strands, straight dirty hair and other similar hairstyle details will negatively affect the image.
Greek style dress styles
There are a lot of options for beautiful clothes today. It just makes my eyes wide open! And many models are available for making with your own hands, as long as you have a successful dress pattern in the Greek style at hand. Burda is a wonderful magazine. Although in many cases, some kind of exclusive dress pattern in the Greek style is not required at all. Often, an outfit is made by draping a piece of fabric over the figure and securing the garment with pretty brooches, artificial flowers, pins, or a few stitches.
Other styles are based on conventional models using embroidery on the chest, along the bottom of the dress, and on the sleeve cuffs, made in the Greek style.
For evening
Evening dresses in the Greek style have long become commonplace in the fashion world and are in demand. Many designers use this style to create their collections of cocktail dresses. However, do not use too many accessories; they add weight and spoil the appearance.
Tips for creating an outfit:
- open shoes in light shades
- small clutch
- elongated earrings and bracelets
- makeup in pastel colors
- the hairstyle is preferably high, you can even use a regular ponytail
Dress created using drapery
You can make such an outfit in just a few minutes. Not only that, to sew such a dress in the Greek style with your own hands, you don’t need a pattern as such.
To work, take a piece of fabric across. The middle is held near one side. Both ends lead to the shoulder opposite the draped side. You can pin the fabric directly on the shoulder, or you can sew a narrow strap in the right place.
Now, with a needle with a thread inserted into it, the fabric is grabbed on the side so that it does not fall apart. It is recommended to make small, beautiful folds during baiting. The seam is made from the middle of the thigh to the armpit. After this preparatory work, the area caught on the live thread can be sewn on a machine.
It is worth understanding that the seam will be obvious, so you should carefully select the color of the threads. In some cases, you can limit yourself to hand stitching. Again, neatness and evenness of the stitching will play a huge role here.
As you can see, to make a luxurious outfit, sometimes you don’t need a complex pattern at all. Floor-length Greek-style dresses can be made in a few minutes, if you have a well-draped material on hand.
Greek dress without seams
Some people may not believe that you can sew a luxurious outfit without threads and needles. And the dress pattern itself in the Greek style will be made with minimal effort. That is, a piece of fabric is simply cut off from a roll!
Of course, there are some things you'll have to take care of. These are accessories for clothing, such as brooches for pinning shoulder joints and a wide belt.
So, let's start creating a masterpiece!
- A well-draped, ironed fabric is laid out on the floor or large table so that the direction of the grain thread goes transversely.
- The side cut lines are folded towards the middle of the rectangle.
- The upper folded corners are moved slightly apart to form a neckline.
- These places are fixed with hairpins (brooches) or thread.
- Now the dress is put on the figure with the open part forward. The fabric is beautifully laid out in folds and a belt is put on that will hold them in the desired condition.
If you wrap the robe a little, you will get a rather modest model of a Greek dress. And if part of the body is left open between the fabric, and the belt is fastened almost at the waist, then the model will be extremely extravagant. This style is suitable for ladies with an ideal figure and high breasts.
For full
Greek dresses in everyday life are also very suitable for overweight women. They will easily hide extra pounds, making your figure much slimmer. And thanks to such clothes, you will no longer need to hide behind tight, closed dresses; on the contrary, in this situation, sleeveless models are preferable. Open your shoulders and arms without being afraid of your figure. Dark and pastel colors look very beneficial on obese women, because thanks to the color scheme they will visually make you look thinner.
Greek dress with front seam
You can design an outfit in a similar way by stitching the connection of the side panels folded to the middle of the segment. In this case, you also do not need a specially designed pattern for your figure. Dresses in the Greek style have such a wonderful feature: the fabric and the ability to beautifully distribute the folds of the drapery are important.
The instructions for making the dress are quite simple.
- The fabric is folded in half crosswise face to face.
- The seam is not completely stitched. You need to leave a gap equal to the depth of the cutout. By the way, the dress can be worn either with a slit in the front or in the back.
- The resulting “sleeve” is laid out on the table so that the seam runs exactly in the middle of the product, with the embroidered edges facing up.
- Pull the edges of the cut apart slightly so that a neckline is formed.
- The corners of the free ends are fastened to the edge of the material located underneath. You can stitch the edges a little, then the dress will have hangers. And if you fasten it pointwise (with a thread or a brooch), then the shoulders will be open.
- Having treated the neckline so that it does not get wet, you can put on the dress, beautifully laying out the folds and tying the belt.
Length
Long
The floor-length model in the Greek style looks the most impressive. It lengthens a girl’s legs and also hides imperfections, such as full hips. Maxi is an eternal classic in conveying the spirit of Greece through clothing, since this is exactly the option that girls wore in ancient Greece. Interesting models are obtained when the bodice is asymmetrical and the skirt flows along the figure. It is on long dresses that the bride's gaze falls when choosing a wedding dress, as it looks the most sophisticated.
A short
Short Greek dresses are more popular among young people. Mini and midi lengths are chosen more for graduations, since nothing should restrict movement on this significant evening or party. Interesting styles with short dresses in the Greek style are obtained with an A-line silhouette, straight and with a low waist. Sandals with ankle support or gladiator sandals with a stable mid heel are perfect for your feet. Thanks to these shoes you will definitely not get tired and will be able to move freely.
Asymmetrical
Revealing the collarbones, the asymmetrical bodice emphasizes femininity and makes the outfit sexier, this can be seen in the photo of the Greek-style dress. The best options in such models are complemented by a belt made of ribbon or natural fabrics in the same style. You shouldn’t pay much attention to additional decorations, as they can distract attention from such a truly mesmerizing outfit. Also, always pull your hair up so that it does not fall and cover your shoulders, because this is the highlight of this style.
Round neck dress
This summer outfit is perfect for both young slender girls and ladies with luxurious shapes. You will need a fairly simple pattern for sewing. Greek style dresses for plus size people fit well if the belt is located slightly below the waist. The side seams can be machine stitched, and the neckline and armholes can be finished with bias tape. In some cases, there is a reason to process the armholes with a simple hem of the cut.
Making such patterns for summer dresses in the Greek style on your own will not be difficult even for a novice seamstress. The length of the outfit can be any: a short tunic looks just as interesting as a long evening robe.
What accessories and shoes will suit the look?
An elegant dress in the Greek style goes with sandals on thin straps with any type of heel, with criss-cross straps in front, and in some cases, classic shoes. Shoes with a jumper between the toes, lace-ups, and gladiators look good with everyday wear. For jewelry, you can take long luxurious earrings made of gold or silver, add a tiara to your hair, and thin metal bracelets on your hands. As for rings, a minimum of them is recommended. A small gold/silver clutch, or a pouch embroidered with beads or rhinestones is a wonderful completion of the look.
Long evening dress in Greek style
For ladies with a luxurious figure, we can recommend a dress with a “bag”, gathered at the top with a drawstring. Thin straps can be placed on the shoulders from front to back. Sometimes the dressmaker passes one strap through the back along the neck and fastens its ends in front. A sort of clamp is formed. To make such a dress in the Greek style with your own hands, you will need a very simple pattern, in the form of a rectangle, where the width of the segment will be the length of the robe, and its length will be the girth of the figure.
So you shouldn’t feel complex about your weak sewing and cutting skills. You need to bravely pick up scissors and a needle and start creating a masterpiece that will allow you to become unique, beautiful and attractive.

DIY Greek style dress: how to make a pattern and sew it
280 Article author: Reading time: 1 min.
Any representative of the fair half of humanity wants to dress stylishly and beautifully. And the main item in a woman’s wardrobe is a variety of dress models. They serve as an elegant option for special occasions.
But buying something new for every holiday is often not possible on a modest family budget. And in this case, making a dress yourself would be a great solution.
And although many people think that this activity requires special skills, there are models that even an inexperienced needlewoman can handle. We are talking about a version in the Greek style.
What is needed and how to make a pattern
In order to sew this variation, you need to decide on the following parameters:
- Choose matter. It is preferable to use light, flowing fabrics: chiffon, silk, satin, lightweight knitwear;
- Decide on colors. The classic range consists of white, cream, beige and lilac with gold trim;
- Thickness and location of straps: thin or wide, two or one.
For sewing you will need approximately four meters of fabric.
Next, you can make this variation without creating a pattern or use simple drawings. In the second option, you will need to adjust the base pattern to your measurements. And therefore you need to measure the following indicators: chest, waist and hip circumferences, as well as the length of the future product.
How to sew a dress in the Greek style with your own hands
The complexity of the work will depend on the model you choose. For the first implementation, it is better to use a variation that consists of one piece of fabric laid in a certain way:
- Model with thin straps and wrap. For this design you will need a rectangular piece of fabric (preferably lightweight knit). Then we process the edges and sew the straps in the upper corners. The resulting outfit should be worn according to the model in the photo. This is a wonderful piece of clothing for a hot summer day.
- The following example is a wonderful opportunity to quickly build yourself an original evening dress. In this version, the fabric should be folded in half and the cutout should be made as shown in the sample. Next, finish the neckline, stitch the side seams and sew on the fastener. Next, sew an elastic band to the waist line and decorate the product.
- For the next dress you will need four equal pieces of fabric. The operating procedure is as follows.
We sew the middle seams of the front and back parts, then sew the side seams, sew the shoulder seams, while gathering them (or form ties along the shoulder line). Insert the belt. This detail can go together with the dress (for this it must be inserted into a specially prepared niche along the waist line) or be a separate element.
Possible options for decorating a dress in the Greek style
In this style there are many extraordinary techniques for decorating the finished product. And each of them can be performed separately or combined with each other:
- Decorate the top and bottom edges with decorative contrasting tape. Often it has a silver or golden color and a pattern in the form of an ornament. This tape is also used to define the waistline. This is done by sewing or the strip is used as a belt;
- Greek style implies a special emphasis on the high waistline. It can be decorated with a lush artificial flower, bright embroidery or a pattern of beads, beads or sequins;
- Also often the simplicity and grace of lines, especially when using a single color, instead of a belt, the waist is intertwined with a twisted shiny cord with tassels at the ends;
- If the variation has a side slit, then its edges can also be decorated with embroidery or ribbon;
- For special occasions, the upper part of the model, which has a deep neckline, is embroidered with beads or sequins.
Of course, this article does not list all the options for this unusual garment and ways to decorate it. There are too many of them to mention them all at once. And even more can be obtained using the given samples as base ones and showing a little effort and imagination.

What color of Greek style dress is popular today?
Delicate pastel shades, classic black, beige, red tones are preferred. If you wish, of course, you can wear a yellow, green, purple, or burgundy dress. The nuance is that such a dress in itself is an attractive elegant element, and fashion designers advise choosing flashy bright colors only in extreme cases. For example, girls can afford it, but older ladies should think about it first. The priority is white, delicate pink, beige, blue, gray, green, peach, and all similar shades. It is interesting that fashionable beauties and designers are very fond of the colors of ash roses and all shades of blue for sewing such a dress.
Pattern of a short Greek dress
This version of the dress can even be suitable for work; it will be enough to just cover your shoulders with a light blazer. You need to model the dress using the basic pattern of a sheath dress, which you can download in this article.

How to cut and sew a Greek dress
- Transfer the front of the dress onto paper and draw red lines.
- Next, cut the top part from the front part of the dress, passing along the waist, and also make cuts along the red lines. Now spread it apart.
- The remaining lower half is the skirt, cut along the darts and spread apart for pleats. Fig 1.
- Re-shoot the back and model it as in drawing 2.
- You don’t have to sew in a zipper, since the fabric for such a dress should have good stretch.
- Cut the straps separately with a width of 8 cm, fold them in half and sew them, in the end the width should be about 4 cm. Adjust the length during fitting, the orientation should be 16-18 cm.
How to sew an evening dress with your own hands
This is a very common problem among girls who have no experience in tailoring, who want to try themselves as a fashion designer and create a beautiful and unique evening dress with their own hands. If this activity seems difficult, it is certainly not boring, because we are talking about creativity.
But in order not to waste time, let's move on to practice, consider the main stages of creating an evening dress and, guided by the instructions and advice of experienced craftsmen, model a simple dress in the Greek style.
General rules state that the style of the dress is chosen depending on the occasion and the characteristics of the figure. The same applies to the version of its execution.
If we talk about the Greek evening dress, it is characterized by simplicity of design, draperies or folds. How they will be located is up to you.
So, having decided on the model, we move on to creating or searching for a pattern - this is the second step. You can find it on the Internet or in magazines.
Please note that the pattern for an evening dress will not be much different from the pattern for everyday wear. The difference lies in the depth of the neckline, the presence of a slit, and bold drapery options. Modeling takes place on the main workpiece, which we will talk about later.
Be sure to think through the options for the details of your outfit and sketch them on a piece of paper.
Each girl has her own figure characteristics, which must be taken into account when modeling a pattern or creating it. Even if you have a pattern that fits your size, it’s a good idea to double-check it and adjust it to suit your figure . This is the third step towards creating an evening dress with your own hands.
The main measurements taken with a centimeter are chest circumference and height, waist and hip circumference, back width, and dress length. This data must be divided in half. Subtract 2 centimeters from the front of the dress in favor of the back of the pattern.
To ensure that your measurements are taken correctly, ask your family or friend for help, or you can also take your measurements at a studio.
The choice of fabric is influenced by various aspects:
- model;
- season;
- fashion house recommendations for your favorite pattern;
- level of sewing skill.
You can quickly sew a dress if you choose a simple model and easy-to-process fabric. For example, combining complex fabric with a simple style and vice versa will help you save time.
Of course, it’s not difficult to list the range of dress fabrics, but it’s not necessary. You can successfully select a material by comparing the properties of the selected fabric and the one recommended for sewing the model you need. Also pay attention to your own wardrobe and study ready-made clothes on store shelves.
Let's start with the modeling itself. Take the pattern for the base of the dress and load it into a modeling program or transfer the main points with lines onto tracing paper.
Decide on the length of the dress and mark it on the BF segment, increasing or decreasing the segment.
On the drawing, draw an inset under the chest line. To do this, set 4-5 cm down from points C and C1 and connect the new points with a straight line. From this line, set aside another 8 or 9 cm (the width of the insert) down and connect the points with a line.
Close the darts. The insert will be continuous and without seams. Decorate both inserts with smooth lines.
Mark on the drawing, taking into account the features of the model, the facing of the neck (in the figure it is indicated in pink). Its width is 1.5-2 cm. The neckline on each shoulder seam is widened by 2.5-3 cm from point G.
Transfer the solution of the chest dart G2-N1-G3 to the neck of the dress. Or transfer it to a cutting line under the chest. To do this, draw a line perpendicular to the neck line. (It is shown in red). The displaced sections of the neck are indicated by numbers 1 and 2.
Close the dart G2-N1-G3 by moving the piece N1-G2-1-2 (connect points G2 and G3).
Draw a smooth line around the armhole of the dress, as shown in the diagram.
