A flowing scarf for the temple - we sew according to the pattern with our own hands

History of the church scarf

This custom has come from ancient times. A headscarf was a standard decoration for Slavic girls. In Greece, for example, there were no headscarves, but the clothes completely covered women, saving them from the sun and prying eyes.

Wedding scarf

Married Slavic women were not allowed to go out into the street or into public without a headscarf that would hide their hair and face. Unmarried girls did not wear headscarves on the streets, but they were required to wear one to church.

In the 21st century, not all girls wear church scarves; now there are no special rules about this. Sometimes head scarves are worn not only to church, but also as an element of a stylish look, especially in autumn or spring.

  • they do not fall off the head even when bowing,
  • cover the shoulders, which is important in the summer, when you want to wear a sundress, but because of the open shoulders you have to give it up
  • very beautiful and effective! Especially at a wedding, the bride will look incredibly beautiful in such a scarf.

Such a scarf is sewn from guipure, fiston lace fabric, or simply from silk and trimmed with appropriate lace.

4:1239

Consumption: with a guipure width of 140-150cm, from 110-120cm you will get 2 scarves; lace for this size is 3-3.5 meters (for 1 scarf); 1.5-1.6 meters of bias tape to match; 1.5 m of thin satin ribbon; 2 end caps (or 2 beads)

4:1604

This scarf was sewn for an adult, but my five-year-old daughter works as a model))), although the scarf looks almost as beautiful on an adult

4:277 4:282

Layout plan.

1) cut the fabric (140cm wide) in half lengthwise (in advance! In the picture there is a plan of the already cut half!!!) 2) bend the strip of fabric along the width 3) cut off one of the lower corners (see photo below) 4) mark the drawstring

5:1208 5:1213

This is how we roughly cut off one of the bottom corners on the fabric

6:1830 6:4

This is after they trimmed the perimeter with lace and sewed on the drawstring (the photo, as always, is uneven))), but in real life everything is smooth!!!)

7:744 7:749

lace and guipure are elastic, so I sewed them on an open stitch, but you can also use a double needle

8:1432 8:1437

I cut off the lace at the corners, and then sewed it with a small overlapping zigzag, then cut off the excess

9:2119 9:4

We sew the drawstring from the inside out, although on another scarf I sewed it from the face - it also turned out well

10:689 10:694

this is how the drawstring looks from the front side in this case

11:1319 11:1324

thread a satin ribbon into the drawstring

12:1906 12:4

I have end caps with a large hole, and the knot of ribbon slipped into it easily. That's why I came up with this design with a bead

16:731 16:736

And here’s what a children’s scarf looks like on a child.

16:835 16:840

I inserted an elastic band into the drawstring and secured it. And the scarf is fastened with a button so that the child does not accidentally tighten the ribbon around his neck.

17:1587 17:4

They always ask for sizes for children's scarves.

19:1131

Children, of course, are different, and it depends on the width of the lace with which you will trim the scarf (and in general, will you?))) but here is approximately what I drew. 80 cm of guipure will make THREE (!!!) scarves

20:1976

By the way, the owner of the trademark of this scarf found me and threatened me with court and a huge fine if I did not delete this post... So, I got the cut right 100%!)))))

20:285 20:290

So, girls, take advantage. In an online store, exactly the same scarf made from exactly the same guipure costs 2,700, but for us it will cost 300 rubles, give or take. 9-10 times cheaper!!!!

22:1599 22:4

Added on August 11, 2015: Lately I’ve been getting comments on this post from anonymous people. And everyone, like a carbon copy, with irritation (if not anger), tells me that if you buy guipure and lace in a store, it will be more expensive than buying a ready-made scarf.

22:467 22:472

Gentlemen, don't bother! I will not delete or change this post, because... many of my guests have found it useful or will find it useful in the future! Look at the number of people who have favorited this post!

22:823

So, anonymous gentlemen, don’t try, I won’t answer you anymore!

22:955 22:960

added: March 2021. The cost today is as follows: guipure 380 rubles: 110cm = 418 rubles for TWO scarves, one = 210 rubles

22:1160

Lace 80 RUR: 350cm = 280 RUR. Bias binding 9 RUR: 1.5 m = 14 RUR. Satin ribbon 4 rubles: 1.5m = 6 rubles. End caps 6 rubles: 2 pieces = 12 rubles

22:1371

We don’t count the threads)) Total: 520 rubles - the cost of an adult scarf.
But, by the way, you can find lace cheaper on the Internet. 22:1583 22:4

Canonical meaning in the church

According to tradition, a headscarf must be worn to church. It can be decorated with various elements. Anyone can wear a headscarf, both married and single girls.

A headscarf looks modest and at the same time luxurious, allowing you to experiment with a variety of shapes, designs, and colors. And it's quite comfortable.

For example, according to church rules, the bride must completely cover her hair. The veil will not be able to perform this function. Therefore, Catholic brides prefer a lace white cape for the celebration.

How to choose the color of the cape

It is extremely important to choose the right color of the cape-hood for the temple.

The white color symbolizes the miraculous light of God. It is appropriate for weddings, Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension and Transfiguration. A white cape is also worn for Easter services and the sacrament of baptism.

The black color of the scarf is the complete opposite of white. Such a headdress should be worn for repentance, renunciation of temptations, during fasting or mourning.

Colored capes can also be appropriate. For example, green - on Trinity, blue - on the days of veneration of the Mother of God.

What should it be

It is advisable to have two or three types of church scarves so that you can change them, wash them, and so on.

Donskoy scarf of delicate color

If a girl is not whimsical, then one headdress can be used constantly.

For a holiday, it is advisable to have a white lace cape; if going to church falls on a day of mourning or fasting, then the attire should be black or brown.

It is recommended not to buy products with different patterns, words or designs. It would look out of place in a church.

The product should fit well on the head, not come off, not come untied, so that the girl does not distract her attention from the service in the temple. Therefore, the Donskoy shawl with ties, which covers both the head and shoulders, is perfect.

Even a girl with no experience in needlework can sew a church scarf with her own hands. It is important to choose the right fabric. Below we describe in detail how to make a pattern for a non-falling church scarf.

Don scarf pattern

A person, even a beginner, can make a scarf for a temple, the pattern of which is done with your own hands in a few steps. If a person does not have artistic skills, you can simply print it from the Internet.

Step-by-step instruction:

  • Fold a sheet of cardboard 110 cm long and 60 cm wide in half so that the fold is in width;
  • Unfold the finished rectangle so that the fold is at the top. This will be the back of the head, the face will be on the left;

Chiffon fabric product

  • Connect both marks with an arc line, using a pattern or by eye, there will be a drawstring in this place;
  • Construct the same segment from the lower right to the upper left corner. This is where the bottom edge of the scarf is located.

Attention! The pattern can be changed, it all depends on the size of the head.

How to calculate the amount of fabric

If you purchased a meter of material 130-140 cm wide, then you can sew a product measuring 30 cm. If you buy 130 cm of fabric, you will be able to make two scarves.

The Don scarf is quite easy to sew yourself, it is only important to follow all the instructions described below.

Fabric selection

For a church scarf, you can use both warm and light summer materials, for example, guipure and tulle, silk and lace.

Scarf-hood

You can buy both expensive and cheap fabrics. It all depends on the girl’s personal preferences. But it is advisable to have two types - for winter and for summer.

  • White is more of a formal color. White mainly symbolizes the Lord God. This color is associated with Christmas and the bright holiday of Easter;
  • Black fabric is bought for mourning moments. Or, if a girl is fasting, then she should stick to dark shades;
  • Sometimes red, orange and bright colors are used for sewing. But it is important that there is no drawing or pagan symbolism on it.

How to sew a scarf for a temple with your own hands: master class

First, cut off the required amount of fabric for sewing the cape. Next, you need to fold the resulting segment in half and mark it as shown in the diagram. The dotted line marks the place where the drawstring will be sewn in; below (20 and 30 cm) there is a cape, which, falling, will cover the shoulders and chest. The cape gradually lengthens - from the chest to the center of the back. If desired, it can be lengthened or shortened. Having transferred all the lines to the fabric, we cut it out, not forgetting about the seam allowances.

There are two ways to sew a cape

The first method is simple, without a drawstring. In this case, we will need to carefully bend the edges by 2-3 millimeters and sew them on a typewriter, and run the lace prepared in advance along the bottom.

The second method is more difficult. We sew the drawstring from the wrong side along the marked line and stretch a satin ribbon or braid into it to match the cape, 50-70 cm long.

How to decorate a finished cape

A scarf sewn according to our master class is suitable for both everyday church services and holidays. It is important to remember that the Orthodox Church does not approve of jewelry, so it is important not to overdo it either with the brightness of the color of the product or with its decor. You can decorate such a cape with a small brooch or beads/beads along the bottom of the product.

Finishing

The lace needs to be sewn on the front side using small stitches. The work can be carried out in two ways:

  • Cut off at the corners and overlap.
  • Gently bend the corners with a whole strip of lace that runs from one edge of the drawstring to the second. Insert the ties into the holes. If desired, you can decorate with beads or sequins, but so that it looks appropriate.

How to wear a Don scarf correctly

The Don scarf should completely cover the head and fall slightly onto the shoulders; it is advisable to tie the hair in a ponytail or bun.

If the scarf is sewn using the technology indicated above, then it will not fidget on the top of the head or fall off. This type of product can also be worn to a wedding, baptism or wedding. If desired, you can decorate with tulle or organza.

Head cape for church pattern

It is recommended to wash the scarf only by hand or in a delicate cycle, since most often it is made of very thin and capricious materials. Ironing of products is allowed, but only with gauze or cotton cloth. Do not dry near heating devices or open sun, as yellow spots or stripes may form. According to Orthodox rules, you cannot throw a scarf on the floor or handle it roughly. It is believed that in this way the girl shows her attitude towards the Lord.

Attention! It is advisable to store children's headscarves separately from adult items, because they are considered more innocent and pure. Young children from an early age need to be instilled with a love of visiting Temples.

Child in service

In conclusion, it should be noted that making a pattern for a temple scarf is quite easy. It can be worn not only to church, but also as an accessory for every day. Many believers say that the cape for the temple should only be made by the girl who will wear it, and they also recommend consecrating the product when going to the service for the first time.

How to sew a scarf for a temple pattern

The Don scarf can be purchased in the store. Or you can sew it yourself. It won't take much time, and even a beginner can complete this task easily.

To sew a Don headdress you will need:

  • 110-120 cm light silk or guipure fabric 140-150 cm wide;
  • 2-3 m of lace (optional) for edging the edges;
  • 150 cm of thin satin ribbon or braided cord;
  • 120 cm wings;
  • 2 crystal beads or other fasteners for ribbon ends.

From the specified calculation of material (fabric), you can even get 2 scarves. It all depends on the desired volume of the product.

Cut the fabric lengthwise so that you get 2 even pieces of 140*55-60 cm. Then, fold one piece in half along the long side. On the free edges, draw an arc from one corner to the long opposite side. In the finished product, this will add length in the back and shorten it a little in the front, while still keeping your shoulders covered.

At a distance of 50-60 cm from the folded edge, the drawstring is sewn on the wrong side. The sewing line should also resemble an arc. Insert a ribbon or lace into the drawstring. Attach beads or special scarf clips to the ends. If desired, the edge of the scarf can be trimmed with lace or ribbon. And your lace holiday scarf is ready!
