We sew a velvet dress with our own hands

Variety of velvet dresses

The most popular models of dresses made from this material:

  • evening: these are usually long dresses. They are decorated with sparkles, embroidery, and sequins. Skirts in such models are made to fit at the hips and flow downwards, with a train. For young people, designers offer cocktail dresses with a deep neckline and open shoulders. The combination dress looks very modern. It uses a combination of velvet and lace to lighten the heavy velvet;
  • dresses for daily wear: made of moderate length and with a fitted silhouette. Skirts are usually made wide;
  • business dresses: this style emphasizes independence, self-sufficiency and taste. The combination of a classic style and luxurious material will always attract the admiring glances of colleagues.

Features of working with velvet

It is not recommended to store the cuts folded to prevent creases from forming. It is better to use hangers with clothespins.

When working with velvet, you should use only proven patterns. If you are in doubt about the cut, it is advisable to cut the product from waste fabric and baste it. Try it on and make adjustments. And only then start cutting the velvet. The fact is that you cannot redo the seam on this material; traces of the previous stitch will always remain.

As with all other pile fabrics on velvet, you need to take into account the direction of the pile. The color of the fabric along and against the pile is rich in saturation.

After cutting, it is advisable to immediately process the cuts with an overlocker, since the fabric frays very much.

To prevent the fibers from getting wrinkled when ironing, you need to pass the iron along the wrong side, and place a terry towel under the front side. This fabric should only be ironed with steam at low temperature.

If, after all, the lint “lays down”, you can try to correct the situation by holding the cloth over a boiling kettle and then combing the lint with a toothbrush.

You need to work with velvet with thin needles and thin threads.

When performing machine stitching, in order to avoid displacement of the layers of fabric, it is advisable to make basting stitches on both sides of the stitching. After completing the stitching, the basting is immediately removed so as not to crush the fibers.

Velvet dress - a modern choice

(Part one)

The most pleasant voice to hear is velvet, the best time to relax is the velvet season, the most beautiful cards for mom on March 8 are on velvet paper, and the velvet dress has won the hearts of fashionistas from all over the world.

Times change, as do clothing styles. A sophisticated velvet dress still doesn't go out of style. However, now any woman can afford to look elegant and beautiful by purchasing or sewing a velvet dress.

And your wardrobe should definitely have fashionable velvet dresses for the autumn and cold winter season of the coming year.

Gone are the days of the boring velvet case. Now the velvet dress has undergone “tuning”, “modernization” and “upgrade”.

Velvet dress. What occasion should you wear it for?

Previously, when velvet was expensive, a velvet dress was worn to social events, receptions, concerts, the opera, balls and holidays. Agree, what theater or opera performance would be complete without women in beautiful outfits, arm in arm with gentlemen.

Now the range of application of such a dress has become much wider.

correctly chosen velvet dress will not only emphasize the formal atmosphere, but is also comfortable as a dress “from morning to evening.” Modest during the day, it will sparkle with different colors in the evening light with elegant shoes.

Of course, it is better to choose a velvet dress, guided not only by your own taste, but also by useful advice from designers.

Here is a very interesting look at velvet by stylist, fashion designer, creative director of her own Fashion House, Ia Yots.

sewing a velvet dress. Color

Jewel tones and black are classic velvet dresses.

Emerald, ruby, sapphire dresses...

L'Wren Scott decided to continue this tradition by adding purple dresses to its collection.

The designers worked hard to demonstrate flora and fauna, geometry and abstraction on velvet dresses. Green leopard? Please: Gucci invites ladies to wear a long dress with a cut-out to the waist in a color unusual for a “wild cat” and an imitation of the smell. Intricate ethnic motifs? Etro has colorful patterns that look luxurious on velvet and decorate evening and cocktail dresses.

Undoubtedly, the color of a velvet dress largely depends on your preferences. But some simple rules also play an important role:

  • For concerts and going to the opera, rich shades of red and burgundy, as well as classic black, are suitable.
  • For business meetings, it is better to choose dark shades: black, royal blue, dark blue. For a business woman, a velvet dress in a seasoned style, not flashy, but stylish, is suitable.
  • For a cocktail dress there are no restrictions in color or color, fortunately, there is a variety of stretch velvet on sale

Look at this live shot!

All designers admitted that velvet has returned to the world of fashion with triumph! Now not only dresses and suits are made from it, but also gloves, shoes, trousers, shorts, and hats! stretch velvet has gained such popularity, because it is not only beautiful, but also very practical and comfortable to wear. A dress made of stretch velvet does not require additional decorations or accessories - the beautiful fabric makes it bright on its own.

Thanks to the stretch components, clothes made from this material fit perfectly and can be used to sew tight skirts, dresses, and tight blouses.

Choosing a velvet dress. Cut

Once you have already decided on the color of the dress, you need to pay special attention to its cut. When choosing a velvet dress style, you should pay attention to your figure, hairstyle, facial features and eyes. It is often difficult to determine the style of a dress offhand if, for example, you are going to sew it yourself or order it from a seamstress.

When choosing a style, you can take into account the following rules:

  • For slender women, we choose a cut that emphasizes the figure.
  • Tall ladies will suit long dresses, and short ones – short ones or to the middle of the knee.
  • Overweight women do not need to choose dresses with ruffles and frills, and in a problem area (for example, on the stomach) you can make a beautiful decoration (most often a bow or drapery). This will not only add color to the velvet dress, but will also highlight your style.

Here and there you read: this material is difficult to work with... experienced dressmakers are reluctant to take on this capricious material...

Velvet requires attention, but no more than other fabrics

In two evenings I sewed a dress from stretch velvet. I even came up with a name for this dress - VELVET PUMA

I am very pleased with this fabric and how it turned out. It is easier to sew from stretch velvet than from any other material . Even unsewn cuts will look decent. I had a lot of fun!

Contrary to popular belief, IT TURNS out...

  • Stretch velvet fabric does not stick to debris, it does not wrinkle, even if you travel in a car or taxi on your holiday
  • The fabric is soft, comfortable to the body, like a second skin.
  • Thanks to its elasticity, stretch velvet softly fits the figure and does not wrinkle in folds.
  • Velvet-stretch, thanks to its velvety texture, the fabric is not thin, so it does not outline all the imperfections of the figure.
  • It stretches perfectly - no zipper is needed (I put it in in vain)
  • It does not require special care. Regular machine wash at 30 degrees and dry on hangers. Dot.

And that's not all the benefits of this wonderful fabric. Just thinking about her brings a holiday to my soul. The same will happen to you when you become more familiar with this wonderful knitwear.

I recommend this velvet dress to everyone, without restrictions , dear friends! Even if you are still very timid at sewing or your sizes do not fit into your ideals.

We'll talk about how to sew in the next article. But you can’t tell everything in articles, much less show it. There are still a lot of nuances. Take a look at the page with the video course “Velvet Dress”

Yes, there are several points that you need to know about, and I will tell you about them in the next article. In the meantime, take a closer look at the offers on the shelves of fabric stores.

We have Korean-made stretch velvet, so far 500-700 rudders. It's cheaper than any knitwear. The most elegant dress will cost you no more than one and a half thousand rubles.

And the most important thing is that to sew a stretch velvet dress you don’t need anything other than a sewing machine and a knitting needle. You don't even need to stitch it. But there are nuances that are not written or talked about, because only practitioners know about them...))

Irina, I trusted you from the very beginning. I see what a great specialist you are. I already wrote to you that I sew everything myself. And I’ve already made a stretch velvet dress before. Just don’t think that I’m extolling myself. I always look through your articles and videos and find a lot of new things that I didn’t know yet. You are smart. I just have a piece of velvet lying around and I will be happy to sew a dress with you, I hope I will learn a lot from you about sewing and cutting. Thank you very much.

Thank you Irina for such an interesting explanation, and most importantly timely. I just bought myself velvet and lace in a beautiful cherry color for the New Year. I didn’t know that velvet was such a trend, I always relied solely on my instincts and taste. Let's sew.

I agree 1000%. About 2 years ago I urgently needed a dress for an event. I couldn’t find anything decent in stores, either the fabric was normal or the style. There was a velvet cut, waiting in the wings. I haven’t tried sewing from velvet, but I’ve heard a lot that it’s very difficult to sew. I want to dispel this myth. This is all complete nonsense. I sewed the dress using one overlock machine, only sewing the facing around the neckline on a straight-stitch machine. Sewing is a pleasure. Wear it too.

Irina, well, you probably just feel something to give me to think about!! I’ve been thinking about a dress for my anniversary for a long time, I looked at many styles and fabrics, I went around more than one store, but something just doesn’t work... And here is your article about velvet. I must say that I had experience sewing from stretch velvet back in the 80s: the material was Italian, a stunning dark blue color, and the dress turned out amazing!! But it was too chic, that is, it was not worn very often. Then I changed it into an elegant suit, it also “shone”, then I sewed a skirt for my daughter... In short, it served me for many years. But not once in my search for fabric did I come across velvet in the store. But I looked at your article and look forward to reading the next parts. I already wrote that you know how to look at a problem in a different, unusual way!! I am delighted! I rushed to write a comment, and I’m looking forward to getting to know your ideas and secrets. I’m not afraid to sew velvet, but with your tips, nothing is scary!! Thank you!!

    PS

I’ll be sure to write back with a photo (I promise!!) about my “anniversary” dress. True, I haven’t decided yet whether it will be made of velvet.

December has arrived - a magical time when time slows down. When everyone lives in anticipation of a miracle - the coming New Year, which will leave behind all doubts and worries.

The snow waltzes quietly and the frosty air envelops everything around in winter charm. It's quickly getting dark outside and the evening windows beckon with comfort and warmth, and store windows are already decorated with New Year's garlands.

And this is a particularly happy time, full of inspiration, new feelings and emotions. I want to create in anticipation of the holiday, right now the feelings arise: I am a sorceress, I can do anything, I will succeed! You just need to take the first step and...

And it seems to me that making friends with velvet is the best time, because it is so warm, cozy and delightful.

As in life, we all start something new, doubt and worry, but we move forward no matter what. It’s the same with velvet, but there is a huge plus here - Irina’s help in any situation. So let's be bolder, because there is such super support nearby! Good luck to everyone in your new endeavor!

Tell me, please, what is the difference between velor and stretch velvet? The velor is also fleecy, knitted and, it seems, contains cotton. What is stretch velvet usually made from? Are the rules for sewing velor the same or are there fundamental differences?

Tatyana, a carpetlocker is an overlocker with adjustments for a flat-stitch (covering) machine - two in one. I don’t recommend it; few people dare to change settings while sewing. A waste of money. And due to the complexity of the car, it becomes more vulnerable to breakdowns. And a five-thread overlocker, in addition to a four-thread stitch, gives a stitching line of a chain stitch a centimeter from the edge. The result is a durable, but rather rough seam. Nowadays they don’t sew like that anymore. The four-thread seam is quite elastic and durable.

  32. Tatiana:

    December 23, 2015 at 07:56

Irina, I want to clarify: is 5-thread already a carpet lock? My “knowledge” on the issue of overlocks is gleaned from the Internet, and my head is still a mess.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

  33. Irina Voroshilova:

    December 22, 2015 at 01:03 pm

Tatyana, hello! If you do it with a mesh, then why not in the summer? The fact is that stretch velvet does not wrinkle. And this is a big plus.

About overlock! I can't advise you on the brand. My brother didn’t sew on others. It is important that the overlocker is 4 or 5 thread. In my opinion, 4-thread is quite sufficient.

  34. Tatiana:

    December 22, 2015 at 11:47 am

Hello, Irina! How helpful are you with your article about velvet! My daughter and her husband decided to legalize their relationship and a wedding is scheduled for July. And I have six months to think about and sew a dress. And you drew my attention to stretch velvet, and the yoke and sleeves are made of mesh. Or will velvet be inappropriate in the heat of the day? What do you think?

And about the overlocker! I’m just thinking about buying a 4-thread overlocker, and you confirmed me in my choice (I read the comments with your answers). I’m going to buy Janome 4952 - it’s just that it was the first one that caught my eye, I don’t understand them yet. Do you have an opinion on this matter, or maybe advice from your experience? Isn't the lack of a 2-thread seam critical?

    Thanks for your lessons!

Albina, I can only talk about the equipment I use to sew myself. A sewing machine is like a car; choosing a brand is a matter of taste. I can definitely say that the more complex the machine, the greater the likelihood of it breaking down and using only one function. For example, I have a Berninina Artist sewing and embroidery machine. To embroider on it, you need to make some simple settings. But, having paid a lot of money for it, I never embroidered on it. But if I had an embroidery machine on the side, I think everything would be different.

They say the same about carpet lock. Moreover, these are not sewing amateurs, but excellent professional dressmakers. Two in one does not provide mobility and complicates the equipment itself, which means it increases the risk of frequent breakdowns. I give you the same advice that people I trust once gave me - NO to carpeting. And choose a four-thread (important) overlocker either by manufacturer or by design. The car is relatively inexpensive, but will serve you faithfully. Sewing with overlock is a song!

    And some tips from mechanics:

    — preferably not China (which is practically impossible)

    - the car should be heavy, as a sign that not all parts are made of plastic

    - and not the cheapest in its line (middle class)

  43. Albina:

    November 15, 2015 at 04:52

Irina Yuryevna, thank you again for the articles about velvet. But I would like to consult with you about overlockers - carpet lockers: there are so many offers on the Internet that you can get confused. If you have a minute of free time, please write a few words about what you should focus on when choosing. Thank you in advance. Albina.
