Master classes for sewing different models of dresses on your own

Fabric composition and advantages

The fabric is created using traditional weave. They are made from shortened fibers, the length of which is usually 40–45 mm, but can be longer - up to 70 mm. Short threads provide firmness and elasticity. The material is a combination of natural fiber and synthetics. The artificial component can be viscose or lavsan.

Universal staple

Note! Thanks to the addition of synthetics, staple products have good performance characteristics.

The material is presented in several options. The classification is determined based on differences in fiber composition and color:

  • Mixed (classic).
  • Cotton (cotton).
  • The color can be printed or plain-dyed.

Sometimes elastic fiber is added, which allows the fabric to deform slightly. This option is called stretch.

Staple cuts

Advantages of this type of fabric:

  • Staple items are pleasant to the touch.
  • Lightweight, but the fabric is not see-through.
  • Density.
  • Elasticity. The fabric stretches well due to the addition of artificial fibers.
  • Wear resistance. Staple wardrobe items are not subject to pilling or snags.
  • "Sun resistance". Clothes do not fade when exposed to sunlight.
  • Hygroscopicity. Easily absorbs moisture.
  • High degree of thermoregulation, breathability. The body “breathes” in the heat and does not freeze in the cold.
  • Antibacterial. The material is not afraid of harmful microorganisms, fungi and mold.
  • Hypoallergenic, non-toxic.
  • Eco-friendly, safe for the environment.
  • Drapability.
  • Decorative. The fabric has an attractive appearance and is suitable for sewing dresses.
  • Affordable price.

With a large number of strengths, the material also has disadvantages. May shrink during washing, wrinkles a lot, not too dense, very elastic.

If you use staple fabric of a single color, what can you sew for your wardrobe:

  • Children's overalls, blouses, dresses, pants.
  • Women's outfits.
  • Men's T-shirts and shirts.
  • Shirts, light pajamas, dressing gowns.

Unique fabric

Summer and home wardrobe items are usually sewn from staples. But you can also create festive outfits thanks to the unique decoration.

What is remarkable about the staple material?

The material is a combination of flax and viscose fibers. The staple is characterized by:

  • naturalness, bactericidal properties, breathability;
  • softness in appearance and touch;
  • low price due to the fact that short fibers are used for production;
  • the ability to perfectly hold shape and drape, therefore, openness to experiments in creating a variety of styles;
  • ability to hold paint.

The staple was invented in the 1950s, and for several decades, dresses made from it continued to appear in storefronts. And, despite the fact that they then faced a period of oblivion, staple outfits are today experiencing a new wave of popularity.

Features of working with staples

Staple refers to loose fabrics, so you should know in advance about some of the intricacies of working with the material. Before you decide what to sew from staples, you should know about some of the processing features of this material:

  • To protect the finished product, it is necessary to make seams with closed cuts.
  • For the lock it is better to use a linen seam.
  • After sewing, it is necessary to iron the seams. You can iron seams only using gauze or any other fabric as a lining. In this case, it will be possible to avoid the formation of an unpleasant shine on the surface.

Other properties can be revealed during the work.

Fitted model with circle skirt

A full skirt and a defined waist are a classic combination. You can sew a model with an elastic band - you won’t have to spend a lot of time adjusting it to fit your figure. The skirt can be lengthened to create a fashionable floor-length model. By reducing the volume, we get a “half-sun” style. After taking measurements and constructing a drawing according to size, you need to cut the fabric according to the pattern with allowances of up to 2-5 cm. You can lay out the cutting details with any fraction.

Further:

  • finish the armhole and neckline with a facing (you need to cut it on the bias), stitch and iron the darts;
  • overcast and stitch the side seams on the bodice, leaving an area for the zipper;
  • stitch and iron the seams along the shoulders;
  • process the cuts on the armhole and neckline with a bias facing;
  • sew the skirt seam, pulling it down from the waist with your hand and leaving a section for the zipper;
  • manually gather at the waist allowance (the seam is small) and iron;
  • align the side cut along the bottom of the bodice and the top of the skirt, fasten with pins;
  • stitch the bodice, sew in a zipper;
  • iron the seam connecting it and the skirt to the bodice.

The last stage is to align the bottom with the skirt and hem it with a closed cut. After ironing the bottom, the product is ready.

What can you sew from staples for the summer?

Staple is a universal fabric, so even a novice needlewoman does not have problems determining what is being sewn from staple. Its versatility is possible due to the fact that the material has an attractive appearance, is pleasant to the touch and has a lot of positive properties.

  • The material is widely used in sewing women's skirts, especially for making floor-length skirts. The staple drapes well and has a wide range of shades.
  • Men's wardrobe items are also made from the staple: shirts, shirts and pajamas.
  • You can’t do without cotton material when sewing children’s wardrobes. The fabric is used to make children's T-shirts and T-shirts, shirts for babies and summer sundresses for girls.

Additional Information ! If you skillfully combine the staple with more expensive fabrics, then such a product will look original and worthy against the background of standard things.

What to sew from staples

The material is pleasant to wear and does not require extensive care. With regular washing without the use of chloride detergents, staple products retain their original appearance for a long time.

We wash it correctly

A staple dress will gratefully respond to careful treatment. If you wash and iron correctly, neither the shape nor the paint will be damaged.

Follow these helpful tips:

  • choose delicate mode;
  • Wash at low temperature (up to 40 °C). The dress should be rinsed at the same temperature, because the difference leads to additional shrinkage;
  • use mild detergents, preferably liquid ones, for example, Neon Color, Persil;
  • If you wash by hand, do not rub the fabric, just squeeze it gently;
  • do not use a machine spin, especially for dresses with a train.

After washing, wrap your dress in a sheet or towel. As soon as the main moisture is absorbed, hang it to dry, preferably in the air. When the dress is dry, iron it from the inside out.

Since staple items shrink by 4-6% after washing , gently stretch the dress when ironing, bringing it closer to the original size. We iron the edge first, and then the width. Do not use the steam function.

Iron at medium temperature through gauze or other fabric. Otherwise, you risk getting shiny streaks.

If even the slightest shrinkage is critical, it is better to take the dress to the dry cleaner.

Features of staple dresses for obese women

Staple is a light, soft material from which clothes for the summer season are made: blouses, shirts, dresses, shorts, skirts. The canvas consists of approximately half cotton fibers, the rest is synthetics: lavsan or viscose. The fabric is quite dense, which is why today they sew dresses and sundresses from staples for plus-size women, because, as you know, ladies with curvy figures are recommended to give preference to dense textured materials.

The features of staple dresses in large sizes, and at the same time the advantages of such outfits, are that they:

  • allow air to pass through well;
  • absorb and evaporate moisture well;
  • provide a feeling of coolness in the heat;
  • resistant to fading due to sunlight;
  • give a feeling of softness and comfort;
  • relatively low cost.

Attention! Staple fabric is pliable in work: it is easily dyed in various colors and drapes. However, the fabric requires skill to work with as it is elastic.

The following can be considered the disadvantages of staple outfits in large sizes:

  • After washing, clothes made from staples shrink. To avoid this, in modern production they use impregnation of the canvas with a special liquid, but this does not always help;
  • staple products wrinkle easily, and this is especially noticeable on large-sized clothes;
  • the fabric requires delicate care. Once wet, it becomes less durable.

How to sew a skirt from a spatula

A skirt made of staples is the easiest way to sew a sun style. For this you need approximately a meter piece of fabric. If you plan to create a floor-length skirt, then a linear meter will also be enough to sew such a model.

Work on cuts and sewing in zippers is carried out in accordance with basic sewing rules. At the waist there can be a wide elastic belt or a yoke.

Colorful long dresses with floor-length skirts

If short outfits in the Russian style only partially borrow old traditions (style, ornament, naturalness), then long ones help to penetrate their essence.

Long dresses were worn not only out of modesty, but also following the belief that a woman draws energy from the Earth.

You can still draw energy from such dresses today:

  1. Sundress with a linen or cotton shirt. The skirt flares out under the bust, and the neckline is either square or semicircular, with a gathered neckline.
  2. Dress with a fitted bodice , small boat neckline, long fitted sleeves gathered at the armhole. The skirt softly expands and reaches the floor. The look can be completed with a bright belt.
  3. Floor-length shirt dress. It can be belted asymmetrically with a triangular scarf.

What to wear with staple dresses

Things like this can be the perfect foundation. Bright colors do not require special combination with other wardrobe items. It is worth remembering a few basic rules:

  • Pairs perfectly with jeans.
  • A formal jacket or cardigan.
  • Chunky knit cardigan or sweater.
  • Leather with metal inserts.

Combination options
The main thing is not to use bright and printed things, as they will get lost against the background of the colorful colors of the main element of the image.

Summer dress made of airy Italian staple

Cut

We will cut from this piece of thin staple:

The photo shows four parts of the sundress:

  • the first is the top – the bodice of the dress;
  • the second - scraps of fabric that will remain untouched (they can be used on a light scarf);
  • the third and fourth are symmetrical and equal stripes on the bottom frill.

The width of the cut is 1.5 meters, the width of the bottom frill is 3 meters (we sew two pieces of fabric).

Stage one

First, we need to sew the first part of the sundress into a ring along the edges of the fabric (the edges do not fray, but if you want to be on the safe side, process them with an overlocker).

Next we sew on the elastic thread. There are many options for doing this, we offer only one of them. So, first you need to bend the top edge to the wrong side to a width of about 2 centimeters, smooth it, pin it (it is advisable to process the cut, but you can also close it with a seam with an elastic band if you don’t have an overlocker). Then, using a special foot for sewing on the cord, we sew the elastic with a zig-zag seam, the length of the stitch is 2.5 millimeters, the width is 2 millimeters. You can also use a 1.5mm width, but in this case keep the elastic thread taut. We sew an elastic thread without tension - at the end it can be pulled to the desired shape of the dress. The intervals between rows are about 1 centimeter, you can vary up to 1.5 centimeters.

Below is another example of what a sewn elastic thread looks like:

As a result, after pulling the thread, the wrong side looks like this:

We tie the elastic thread (at least two knots!) and cut it.

Stage two

Let's proceed to the second stage - now we will make and sew the frill.

First, we sew two pieces of fabric into a ring (that is, we will have three meters of fabric). Next, on a machine with a regular straight stitch foot, using a regular straight stitch of 5 millimeters (or the maximum possible on your machine), we lay two parallel lines, retreating 3 and 6 millimeters from the edge. Then we pull the ends of the threads and pull the bottom of the dress into a fold as evenly as possible, the width should be 1.5 meters.

We pin and baste the skirt with the bottom of the bodice, folding the parts with the right sides inward. We sew from the side of the frill, the seam width is about 7 millimeters.

Using an overlocker, we sew from the gathered side, since the allowance will be upward.

We process the bottom of the frill with a stitcher - this way we get a thin, even seam with a double hem, indented 2 millimeters from the edge. If you don’t have such a foot, finish the edge with an overlocker or a zig-zag seam, turn it inside out 5-10 millimeters and hem it with a regular straight stitch.

On the sides there are air loops for the belt (we used a black velvet ribbon as a belt). Sew on black straps as for a bodice (can be purchased at a sewing store).

That's all, the sundress is ready!

Accessories for a dress made of staples

Staple is a very bright fabric that in itself attracts attention, so you need to be careful when choosing accessories:

  • In everyday life, bright staple dresses go perfectly with sandals or low-top pumps.
  • Short dresses go perfectly with high wedge shoes.
  • Evening and cocktail items are appropriate with stiletto heels.

When choosing the right accessory, you should also consider different colors. Massive and tacky decorations do not look good against the background of a bright staple.

Patterns of patchwork staple dresses

At any age, a staple dress is an integral part of any woman's wardrobe. There are a lot of models that can become a suitable basis for a summer look. You can sew a light sundress or skirt from the same fabric.

How to sew with your own hands according to a pattern

You can sew a bright outfit with your own hands, stylized as a Kargopol shirt in folk style. This is what she looks like in real life.

Staple dress

Before you start working with the staple, wash and iron it to allow the fabric to shrink.

This pattern is suitable for sizes 46-50 , and if you are 168 cm tall, the dress will be slightly shorter than in the photo. Also, the version in the photo differs in the hem, so in this regard, refer to the drawing next to the pattern.

Dress pattern for DIY sewing

Of course, it is not necessary to choose the same colors; we do not need this historical accuracy. But let at least one of the three color zones be monochrome.

When working with staples, craftswomen slightly increase the size of the pattern (by five percent), taking into account the shrinkage of the fabric during subsequent washes. You can do this too, but keep in mind that the style itself is loose, and the fabric will shrink the most during the first wash before cutting.

If you have cut out all the parts correctly, it will not be difficult to connect them together.

Polka dot dress - a timeless Russian classic

What to combine with

A tunic combined with tights or leggings, as well as with classic jeans, is a great way to look beautiful and at the same time hide excessively full hips. In this case, you should follow the simplest rule: if a girl is wearing bright leggings in the style of the 1990s, the tunic should be plain and neutral in color (for example, black, white, beige). If the jacket is bright, then the bottom should be more “calm”.

Plump ladies can wear a tunic with formal trousers to the office, and with breeches for a summer walk around the evening city. If the outfit is long, you can even wear it with regular tights as a minidress, but this option is only suitable for slender and very young girls. In summer, you can wear a tunic to the beach with shorts.

Before sewing a tunic for obese women, you also need to decide what time of year this item of clothing will be designed for. If the clothes are intended for spring and summer, you can take a lighter, “airier” fabric. For the cold season, a denser material is suitable. Also a great option for winter are knitted blousons.

Some fashionistas even wear tunics with skirts, but in this case the skirt should be long enough, narrow and straight, but not flared, without ruffles or frills.

Making a tunic with your own hands is quite easy. Such clothes will allow a plump lady to look young and attractive, and will also give confidence in her own beauty.

Fashionable colors

Since fashion this season is quite diverse, it gives the fair sex the opportunity to choose a variety of shades and colors in fabrics. Bright colors and large prints are trending.

Calico prints have become very popular lately, allowing you to create playful sundresses or models reminiscent of ethnicity.

For those who are not yet familiar with the staple, we recommend that you acquire at least one item made from this fabric in your wardrobe. In the heat, it is very pleasant to feel the gentle coolness and sliding effect of this material. It is important to choose the right dress style for your age and body shape.

How to choose the right staple dress

Staple products are suitable for all women as they are sold in different styles, shades and lengths. Each lady will choose a dress to suit her figure and taste. Thin and slender girls are recommended to buy a fitted style.

If a lady is curvy and her belly stands out, then it is worth purchasing a model with a high waist. There is a lift under the chest, which provides beautiful folds when the staple falls lightly down. A floor-length dress looks better with full legs. Also, for an overweight woman, a trapezoidal model is suitable. She will hide large hips and hide her belly.

It is important to pay attention to the neckline of the dress. A V-shaped neckline is suitable for ladies with large breasts. As the staple drapes, flowing fabric falls from the neckline, flattering the figure.

For hot weather, models of summer dresses made from staples with the following distinctive features are relevant:

  • open back - suitable for young girls;
  • a deep neckline will highlight the lady’s curvaceous figure;
  • without sleeves you can create an excellent look for the summer;
  • long sleeves are suitable for evening walks;
  • A girl performing in ensembles will prefer a “peasant” neckline;
  • puffed sleeves make a woman look younger, making her look touching and romantic;
  • with flounces, ruffles - these options are suitable for ladies with a non-standard figure;
  • belts of different widths and configurations;
  • corset or details that imitate a corset.

Nowadays there are many famous brands that use corsets worn over the product as an accent and decorative element. Some brides purchase such jewelry separately, the main thing is to combine them correctly together.

Stylish looks

An example of a casual look based on a staple dress would be the combination of such a medium-length outfit with a thin strap, simple jewelry and comfortable shoes.

A staple dress with small polka dots, tied with a wide dark belt, looks more elegant. Ballet flats to match the dress and bright jewelry will make the look more versatile.

Features of dresses made of staple fabric

Before reading the selection rules, it is worth finding out what properties the staple material has. Unlike natural cotton, the fabric hardly wrinkles. Caring for it is simple and hassle-free.

The staple is produced in different colors and patterns. The designs are preserved for a long time, do not fade after washing and are not damaged when exposed to UV rays. Other properties of dresses made from staple fabric are as follows:

  • soft and pleasant to the touch;
  • elastic, thanks to artificial fibers they stretch well;
  • do not stretch, fit according to the figure;
  • lightweight, but the material is not see-through;
  • dense;
  • resistant to wear - no pellets or snags appear on them;
  • hygroscopicity - the fabric absorbs moisture;
  • reasonable price;
  • allow air to pass through well and retain heat;
  • safe – not affected by bacteria, mold;
  • non-toxic and do not cause allergies;
  • environmentally friendly, safe for the environment;
  • attractive in appearance.

The disadvantage of the material is that it shrinks when washed, so before creating a style, the pattern is first immersed in warm water and allowed to dry. Then they start sewing.

Sewing stages

We process the edges of the product with an overlock or zigzag stitch.

  1. We baste and then sew the shoulder seams. Let's iron them out.
  2. We process the sleeves from the bottom. Fold the bottom 1 cm, baste it, fold it another 1.5 cm, baste it, machine stitch it. Let's iron.
  3. Sew the sleeves along the side seams.
  4. We sew the sleeves into the product. First we lay a line with the longest tie length, leaving the edges of the threads 5 cm on each side. We insert the sleeves into the “body” of the dress. We gather the sleeve to the desired size of the round, pulling the remaining threads. We distribute the gathers evenly and lay a basting line. We try it on, if the sleeves look good, we grind them down. Iron the seam towards the main part.
  5. Fold the facing piece lengthwise, right side inward. We machine stitch on both sides along short cuts at a distance of 1.5 cm from the edge. Turn it inside out and fold it in half along the long side, right side out. We pin, sweep, iron.
  6. We attach the facing to the line of the shelves and neck. We pin it with pins and sew a basting line. We stitch at a distance of 1.5 cm from the edge, taking two layers of facing and one layer of the main part. Iron the seam towards the shelves.
  7. We fold the belt along the length, inside out. Stitch the short edges and turn them right side out. Iron it thoroughly. We turn the free edge (lengthwise) inward by 0.5-0.7 cm, pin it together, and lay basting ties. We stitch using a machine with a seam in increments of 2.5-3, at a distance of 0.2-0.3 cm from the edge. Let's iron.
