Synthetic filler - holofiber - is used for stuffing blankets and pillows. It is easy to use and can be cleaned even at home.
These pillows are washed by hand. Is it possible to carry out this procedure in a washing machine? More on that later.
What kind of material is holofiber?
This is a non-woven filler that consists of hollow twisted polyester (polyester) fibers.
They are located chaotically and act like springs, due to which the material recovers well and quickly after deformation. Are you unplugging your washing machine?
Oh yes! No
Holofiber is produced using thermal bonding of synthetic spiral fibers without the use of chemicals, so it is:
Even in hot weather, it is pleasant to sleep on such a pillow; it has excellent breathability. Hollow fiber does not absorb moisture and odors, so the product remains dry and clean for a long time. The small weight of the pillow allows you to take it with you on trips.
The special three-dimensional structure of the filler makes the pillows:
In addition, sleeping accessories made from holofiber are affordable, and caring for them does not require much effort.
What is holofiber?
A synthetic material that is produced by a non-woven method using polyester fibers. Its structure consists of microscopic fibers - hollow tubes. The filler has many positive qualities that fundamentally distinguish it from down and feathers.
Lightweight, voluminous, retains its shape and warmth, hypoallergenic, does not absorb liquid or foreign odors. Holofiber receives positive reviews among specialists and ordinary consumers, and today it is becoming one of the most popular fillers among its analogues.
Can pillows be washed in a washing machine?
The possibility of using a washing machine to care for pillows depends on the filling of the bedding. Washing is acceptable for the following models:
- Feathers. Washing down pillows has remained a popular cleaning option for decades.
- With wool. Despite the fact that such a pillow will take a long time to dry after washing, this method of care is effective and does not harm the natural filling.
- Bamboo. Products with covers made of natural plant fibers can easily withstand wet cleaning and washing - they are completely safe for such material and at the same time make it easy to restore the freshness and volume of the filling.
- With holofiber and padding polyester. Polyester-based fibers do not absorb moisture and effectively wick away moisture - and therefore are easy to clean and dry quickly.
- With anti-stress filler. Models with small silicone beads are often considered decorative and are not recommended to be washed. However, if the pillow is very dirty, you can return it to cleanliness in the washing machine - provided all precautions are taken.
However, not just any bedding item can be put into the drum: there are items that absolutely cannot be washed. Thus, washing pillows with the following filling options is prohibited:
- Orthopedic foams and memory foams. When exposed to water, such compounds absorb moisture and lose their anatomical properties. It is no longer possible to restore them after this: they completely lose their elasticity and shape.
- Cotton wool. When washed, cotton filling clumps into uneven lumps, and it is almost impossible to dry it.
- Natural plant fillers. Buckwheat, herbs, flax seeds and berry seeds - pillows with this composition categorically do not accept this method of care: their contents swell and crumble, and the beneficial properties are lost.
The cost of such products is quite high, so washing pillows in a washing machine is unacceptable for those who do not want to risk a comfortable sleep. Bedding with such fillings is cared for in dry cleaners, where special compounds and technologies are used.
Holofiber: can it be washed, how do you know when it’s time to do it?
Holofiber pillows, like other textiles with this padding, are perfectly machine washable. Problems can only arise when drying. By following the recommendations, you will be able to avoid many unpleasant consequences.
There is no need to wash the product again. Most modern pillows have a zipper on the side through which the filling can be removed. This way, when the outer part is dirty, you can wash the empty “cover”. After the pillowcase has completely dried, it is stuffed and the filling is “fluffed”.
Manufacturers recommend washing pillows every season, that is, every 3-4 months. However, from experience we can judge that cleaning once a year is sufficient if no visible dirt appears on the product.
Correct and incorrect washing of holofiber products
If you already have a holofiber pillow, or are just planning to purchase one, remember: even if you read on the label that the pillow can be washed in a machine, and the appearance and quality of the product will remain unchanged after washing, in reality it is may not turn out to be the case at all: Machine wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C without spinning - the product care instructions indicate exactly this method of washing holofiber pillows. Sometimes the instructions will also instruct you to use a mild detergent, preferably a liquid rather than a powder. In fact, these and other conditions are useless when washing holofiber, and, accordingly, pillows made from it. However, after washing holofiber in a machine, most housewives run the risk that the fluffy and soft filling will turn into dense, uneven lumps of different sizes after washing. In this form, pillows are extremely inconvenient to use for their intended purpose. You can also find a recommendation to wash holofiber pillows using a tennis ball, as is done when washing down jackets. But the point is that in the case of down jackets, tennis balls are used to prevent the down from matting on one side of the jacket. And they do not protect the artificial holofiber material from changes in structure. There are recommendations to wash holofiber pillows every 2-3 months, that is, at least 4 times a year. But this contradicts information about nephroscopes and hypoallergenicity. In fact, holofiber does not absorb liquids, odors, and does not contain dust mites. Accordingly, it is enough to wash this filler once a year.
Compare and choose
A lightweight and hypoallergenic filler with such a complex name - holofiber - is confidently conquering our bedrooms, slowly displacing grandma's down pillows. Some housewives have already examined this material and concluded that it resembles cotton wool. However, in terms of characteristics, cotton wool is significantly inferior to modern holofiber, and no one would think of washing cotton wool.
Many people still don’t understand how to care for products made from holofiber, whether they can be washed in a washing machine or only by hand, and at what temperature. Let's clarify.
Hand wash pillows
For products made from holofiber, hand washing is preferable. It has a delicate effect, which allows you to preserve the original appearance of the pillow and the properties of the filler for a long time. To carefully wash a product by hand, you must:
- pour warm water into a basin and dilute laundry detergent in it;
- immerse the pillow in the resulting soap solution;
- wash the product, making light beating movements with your hands;
- Completely rinse the detergent, changing the water in the container several times.
Then you should let the water drain; to speed up the process, you can make gentle pressing movements.
Machine washable pillow
Drying pillows with holofiber
After completing the program or hand washing, you should carefully squeeze out the pillow by hand without twisting it. Drying is carried out in a horizontal position, in a well-ventilated area. Therefore, it is recommended to wash it in the warm season, when the pillow can be dried on the balcony or loggia. The product is placed on a towel, grill or other surface that promotes good ventilation over the entire surface and removes excess moisture. Periodically during the drying process the pillow must be turned over.
How to dry it properly?
After the water has drained, it is advisable to take the bedding out into the yard or onto the balcony. It should be placed horizontally on a clean surface, away from sources of dust and dirt (roads, flower beds, vegetable gardens, etc.).
If suitable conditions cannot be achieved, place the product indoors. Open the doors, as well as a vent or window for free air circulation. Shake the pillow periodically to prevent new lumps from forming.
If your item has a zipper and the contents can be removed, dry it separately. Place the padding on a clean cloth in a room without strong drafts but with good air circulation. Whip the siliconized fiber from time to time. When all parts of the product are dry, fill the case.
Wash by hand
Is it possible to wash holofiber in a washing machine and we found out how to do it. What to do with minor marks? How to wash a holofiber blanket in this case?
For minor stains, you should not put the entire product in the washing machine; you can wash it locally. The procedure is carried out manually using a suitable type of liquid detergent. The process itself is carried out like this:
- Warm water is poured into a container and a sufficient amount of detergent is diluted there.
- Using a soft brush or cloth, wash the problem area.
- After the trace disappears, rinse in water several times.
- Dry in the fresh air, but not in direct sunlight.
Is it possible to wash a holofiber blanket with powdered detergent? The answer is only negative. The use of such detergents will negatively affect the appearance of the product; the powder will certainly leave stains on the surface.
Filler recovery
restore a holofiber pillow or blanket after an unsuccessful wash, but the product will no longer have its original appearance. To do this, the bulk accessories should be carefully ripped apart and the restoration of the filler should begin:
- Take a wide massage comb or brush to comb out the undercoat of pets.
- The stray holofiber is laid out in a large basin with high sides.
- The material is taken a pinch at a time and stretched onto the teeth of the comb, after which it is necessary to comb out between them with a brush.
Combing out the filler will not make it fluffy and light again, like new. But this procedure will allow you to use the pillow for some more time, rather than buying another one .
It happens that it is easier to replace the filler entirely. It costs much less than a new pillow or blanket and is sold in specialty stores. At the same time, damaged holofiber can be used to fill sofa cushions, cushions or toys.
Care
It’s easy to become the unlucky owner of a large lump of filling instead of a pillow, but it’s a little more difficult to avoid it. If you were hoping that periodically fluffing and turning the pillow would be enough, then, alas, not in our case. This will only help a pillow with feathers, which has a similar property. Holofiber will not be laid out magnificently due to mechanical stress, but, on the contrary, will become even thinner. It is necessary to create as little extra load as possible for the filler, do not fold or bend it, do not twist it inside.
It is necessary to create as little extra load as possible for the filler, do not fold or bend it, do not twist it inside.
It is enough to clean it in a dry cleaner or washing machine no more than 2 times a year (depending on the contamination), and more often it is undesirable. Proper care and careful handling will keep your favorite pillows and blanket in good condition for up to 10 years.
To extend their service life, it is recommended to lay out the pillows for ventilation during the warm season.
It is recommended to ventilate them more often and periodically keep them in the open sun, which will give them freshness and remove excess static stress. And it will even help reduce the number of washes to once a year. Products can be stored in a horizontal position and should not be crushed or thrown during transportation. It is advisable to completely avoid contact with animals. Let pets have their own personal supplies.
It is recommended to dry the pillow twice during the season - at the end of spring and beginning of autumn.
General care recommendations
Recommendations for caring for this material are very varied and often contradict each other. It is not advisable to wash holofiber in a washing machine; in most cases, manufacturers recommend cleaning it only when absolutely necessary, using dry cleaning services. At home, holofiber can be washed by hand, but it is not necessary to wet the insides of the product. As practice shows, it is safe to machine wash products of this type, but the housewife will do this at her own peril and risk.
In order not to wonder how to wash halofiber when contaminated, even before making a purchase, it is advisable to carefully study the methods of cleaning it. This way you can avoid many troubles in the future. Caring for this material includes:
- Cleaning no more than once every six months. This is facilitated by the structure of the material; the fibers do not absorb moisture and odors, thereby preventing the development of harmful microflora, the appearance and reproduction of mites. Even after a year, it will hardly be possible to notice any foreign odor on the product.
- In order not to ask yourself whether it is allowed to wash holofiber pillows, it is enough to air them regularly and place them in the sun.
- Before washing pillows in a washing machine, it is worth understanding that each such process shortens the service life of the product. Regular washing of this type will render sleep items unusable after at least five years.
- It is best to entrust a baby blanket and other items with filling to a special institution for cleaning. Dry cleaning workers will carry out the procedure with high quality, while completely preserving the original characteristics of the material.
Advice! Increasingly, pregnant women are recommended pillows with this type of filling, and cleaning should be done monthly. How to wash a holofiber pillow in this case, you don’t have to go to the dry cleaner. Cleaning is carried out only by hand using gel-like washing substances.
It is advisable to follow these recommendations, but if there is no other cleaning method, you can try machine washing. There will be many conventions there.
Common mistakes when cleaning and washing pillows
Popular mistakes housewives make when caring for holofiber:
- The main mistake is incorrect position when drying. Holofiber should dry lying down.
- High washing and drying temperatures. Holofiber cannot be ironed.
- Negligence in caring for the filler, i.e. intensive spinning in the drum, twisting during hand washing.
- Using a steamer - do not expose the holofiber to heat.
- Attempts to bleach the napkin using aggressive means. If you have a stain, it would be wiser to rip up the seam and remove the filler than to wash everything together and ruin the product.
Handwash
Step-by-step instruction:
- For wet cleaning, manual soaking is used. Liquid detergent is dissolved in water at room temperature. The pillow is immersed in the cleaning liquid for about half an hour.
- After 30 minutes, the pillow is wrung out in a horizontal position, pressing on it with your hands. It is not recommended to unscrew such products.
- The bath is filled with warm (no more than +30 °C) water. Pillows are rinsed thoroughly. If necessary, repeat the action.
After washing, the pillows are placed on absorbent towels and left to drain.
If the bedside table is very dirty
The removable cover is cleaned of filler and washed separately. If this is not possible, the bedsheet is washed with laundry soap or soaked in a foamy solution of water and liquid detergent. Maintain a temperature regime of no more than +30 °C.
Filler recovery
Even if all recommendations are followed, holofiber may lose its shape during the washing process. Often such a nuisance happens with inexpensive products from little-known manufacturers.
To make the pillow fluffy again, the filling should be fluffed up. Do this after drying. The bedstead is removed and the stuffing is removed. The material is then worked through with a fine-toothed animal combing brush. The holofiber is leveled and beaten by hand, giving it its original fluffiness and airiness.
The stuffing is folded into a bedspread and it is sewn or fastened. The washed pillow is ready for use.
Machine washable
The filler requires delicate manual cleaning. The machine method is not recommended because the padding may become deformed or clump.
But it is not always possible to do hand washing. In this case, the bed is cleaned in an automatic machine, following simple recommendations.
Soak
Prolonged exposure to moisture on holofiber negatively affects its quality. This procedure should be especially avoided if cleaning takes place in a car. The filler is easily and quickly cleaned during a short wash (10–15 minutes).
Delicate mode
Cleaning pillows with this type of filling takes place at low speeds.
This allows you to maintain the quality and shape of the products. With more intense exposure, the adhesions between the fibers of the material are destroyed, it softens and becomes loose. Before starting the machine, the “Delicate” or “Hand Wash” mode is set.
Temperature
The water temperature should not exceed +30 °C . Its increase negatively affects the quality of the material: it flattens, loses its shape and splendor. When choosing a washing mode, this factor is also taken into account.
Detergent
Hollow fiber absorbs and retains the remains of washing powder even after repeated rinsing. Residues of chemicals provoke skin irritation and allergies, and retain a strong smell of synthetic fragrances for a long time.
For cleaning, choose liquid, gel or capsules that are added to the drum of the machine. In special cases, you can use household chemicals - dishwashing detergent, shampoo. They are easy to rinse and do not leave any strong odors or allergenic particles on the bed.
Machine spin and dry
These functions are disabled before washing or during the washing process. Machine spinning destroys the structure of the material, and drying is an aggressive procedure for filled pillows. These options are replaced by manual spinning and fresh air ventilation.
Washing frequency
How often should such products be washed? Manufacturers advise doing this once a season, although experience shows that washing such items once a year is sufficient. The fact is that holofiber is not only a very practical material, but also relatively cheap. If for some reason you fail when washing, simply replace the pillow filling with a new one - this will be the best solution.
You can simply air the pillow once a month - take it out to the balcony, loggia, fluff it up and put it somewhere in a draft. If you properly care for holofiber products, they can last at least 10 years and not lose their attractiveness.

Features of the filler
Holofiber is a loose porous material. It is made from polyester (polyester) fibers. The filler is elastic, airy, hypoallergenic, and wear-resistant .
Washing frequency
This artificial padding does not absorb sweat and moisture, does not acquire unpleasant odors and does not develop pathogenic bacteria. The material allows air to pass through well. In conditions of high humidity it does not rot, fungus does not live in it and mold does not grow. Thanks to these qualities, polyester is washed no more than once a year.
Manufacturers recommend refreshing the padding every month, but there is no reason for this. Frequent wet cleaning may damage the artificial filler.
The need for ventilation
About once a month, pillows with synthetic filling are aired if there is a need to refresh them. The product is laid out on a horizontal surface in the fresh air under the sun. You cannot hang things stuffed with holofiber: they can become deformed .
After washing, the pillows are also dried in a horizontal position. In order not to ventilate the products, it is enough to get several removable bed covers and change them as needed.
The effect of frequent washing on wear resistance
Synthetics are not a favorable environment for the development of pathogenic bacteria. Such products do not need frequent washing.
Intensive rinsing in an automatic machine leads to the destruction of holofiber fibers. Such a product will not last more than 3 years. Washing once a year does not affect the quality and condition of the artificial padding.
Careful cleaning and proper use help maintain all the qualities of the product for 10 years.
Wash or dry clean
If cleaning holofiber manually at home is impossible for some reason, turn to professionals. This procedure is not cheap, but it does not affect the quality of the product.
Holofiber is such a wear-resistant material that washing it in a dry cleaner can be considered an unjustified expense.
Wrong wash
There is no need to wash pillows often. It is also prohibited to wring out or dry in a non-horizontal position.
It is necessary to use detergents that have minimal odor. After all, pillows are used for sleeping, and inhaling strong aromas is not beneficial.
Prolonged exposure of the filling to water can ruin it, so before washing holofiber pillows in the washing machine, you do not need to soak them. And choose the delicate mode or the shortest option.
Features of holofiber
Before we figure out how to properly wash a holofiber pillow, let's try to find out what this mysterious material is.
Holofiber is a synthetic material produced by a non-woven method. For its production, special polyester fibers are used, which are not taken from nature, but are obtained in laboratories. There is no need for weaving processes to form it. Holofiber is very radically different from standard fillers: feather and down.
Main features of the material:
- Ease. If you look at holofiber under a microscope, you will see that each of its fibers is a separate “tube”, hollow inside. Therefore, even with a large volumetric mass, the product will weigh little, especially in comparison with natural fillers.
- Thermal conductivity. Due to the unique composition of holofiber, products made from it have low thermal conductivity - they store heat and ensure normal air circulation.
- Non-hygroscopic. This material does not absorb any liquids, so do not even try to make filling for household “rags” out of it. But in conditions of high humidity it will not become damp and moldy. It won't harbor dust mites. Also, holofiber does not absorb odors.
- Hypoallergenic. Materials of artificial origin never cause allergic reactions.
- Wear-resistant. If you properly care for your pillow, it will not lose its volume and shape for a long time.
Pillow filled with holofiber
How often to wash a pillow
The above does not mean that it is forbidden to wash holofiber pillows. Just regular washing won't do the trick. Washing a pillow or blanket filled with holofiber must be carried out subject to the following rules:
- A holofiber pillow must be washed without a pillowcase.
- You will need a deep basin, as well as a detergent for washing items made from delicate fabrics (balm, gel, wool liquid, silk). You can also use a neutral shampoo.
- Soak the holofiber pillow in water slightly above room temperature with the addition of dissolved detergent. Leave for half an hour.
- Gently wring out the pillow with your hands and rinse it under running water.
- Dry the holofiber pillow in the fresh air on a balcony, window sill, etc. The pillow should be in a horizontal position. Shake it periodically during the drying process.
Open one of the seams. Take out the holofiber and place it in a large container, such as a basin. This is not difficult, because holofiber does not fly through the air (by the way, unlike feathers and down). Washing done by any method and means must correspond to the type of fabric: hand, machine, with or without spin. After drying, return the filling back and sew up the seam of the pillow.
Sometimes you listen in such a way that you hear good advice after you make a mistake. If you initially believed in the possibility of washing holofiber in a machine, it’s a shame to throw away a damaged pillow. You can try to restore the filler:
- Prepare the necessary tools: a wide massage comb and a massage brush for animals (designed for combing out the undercoat of animals).
- Place the stranded holofiber in a large bowl or other convenient container with high sides.
- Combing holofiber will not make it as fluffy and airy as new. But you can still use the same pillow instead of buying a new one.
We suggest you familiarize yourself with the icons on the tags of clothes for washing. You can do even better - just replace the filler. It's much cheaper than buying a new pillow and can be purchased at many stores. And if damaged as a result of improper washing, holofiber can be used as a filler for something else. For example, decorative pillows, which do not need to be as soft and light as pillows intended for sleeping.
So, now you know how to wash holofiber pillows. And more importantly, how not to wash them to avoid damaging the bedding from damage. Of course, it is much easier to put a pillow in the washing machine than to wash it by hand. However, if you really don't have the time and energy, it's better to take them to the dry cleaner, but don't wash them in the machine. Luckily, they rarely need cleaning, so it won't be long before you have to do it again next time.
Despite the fact that manufacturers do not recommend washing holofiber in a washing machine, modern housewives, through trial and error, have adapted to do this without serious consequences for the item.
To obtain the desired result, you need to perform the following manipulations:
- It is strictly forbidden to pre-soak a holofiber blanket or pillow. If you decide to use a machine, then you need to load dry products.
- Set the mode to delicate or manual. If this is not possible, then select the minimum speed.
- The temperature should not exceed 30ºC, even if hand washing can be carried out at higher temperatures. In air, the liquid cools quickly, and in a closed space, exceeding the value even by a few degrees can have a detrimental effect on the state of things.
- Only gels should be used as detergents. Otherwise, the blanket will become covered with stains, and contact with the surface of the pillow will make you constantly want to sneeze.
- Turn off spinning and drying on the washing machine completely. Such manipulations will have to be carried out manually.
Drying items will not take much time if you remove the filler and spread it out in the sun. In any case, it is better to carry out the manipulation in the fresh air, regularly turning the clean object over until it is completely free of traces of moisture.
The risk of damage to the product can be minimized only if you wash it by hand. With this approach, success depends not only on skills, but also on a successful combination of circumstances.
Washing in a machine does not always have a good effect on the appearance of things. The debate about how to wash holofiber pillows in washing machines does not subside, but most housewives noted the suitability of most stuffed items for this type of treatment.
To wash a pillow with holofiber, pay attention to the label. Is it even possible to wash it? Manufacturers often allow this.
You can wash this way, but you must follow some rules.
You can wash the pillow in a machine only in the delicate wash mode without strong spin.
High-quality washing of any products with synthetic filler requires compliance with the following rules:
- Pillows should not be soaked. If you want to wash it in the machine, add a dry item.
- Select the delicate wash mode (or manual). There is no such mode - we slow down.
- Regular powder is not suitable for washing pillows. It leaves streaks and is difficult to wash out of porous padding. It is better to use liquid laundry detergents.
- Drying is done only by hand. Before washing, turn off this function on the machine.
The pillow dries out very quickly, it is better if it is left in the air. You need to periodically turn the product over until there are no wet spots left.
The exception is heavily soiled pillows. In this case, before sending it to the machine, you need to soak the product with detergent, wait a little, and start washing.
What is the best pillow filling?
Even with the most gentle machine wash, there is a risk of lumps forming in the pillow. It’s easy to avoid trouble - wash it by hand or take it to the dry cleaner.
It often happens that the filler loses its appearance, is compressed into lumps, and the pillow becomes shapeless. It takes a lot of time to fix the defect. Ways to restore a pillow:
- If the deformation is minor, a vacuum cleaner will help. Vacuum a damp pillow and large clumps will become smaller, but small ones will need to be whisked up by hand.
- Beat vigorously with a beater or kitchen spatula. The pillow should be damp.
- None of the methods helped? The last thing left is to comb the filler by hand. Rip open the pillow, remove the contents, take a fine-toothed brush (you can use a pet comb) and comb the holofiber.
After an unsuccessful wash, housewives are thinking about buying a new pillow. There is a quick way to return the product to its proper form - replace the filler. It is inexpensive and will cost 300–400 grams per pillow.
The pillowcase needs frequent washing, and it is recommended to wash the pillow itself no more than 4 times a year.
Holofiber has good characteristics:
- does not allow moisture to pass through;
- does not absorb sweat;
- does not retain odors;
- does not crumble;
- bedbugs and other insects do not live in it.
You should wash pillows with this filling no more than 4 times a year, depending on the season, but experts say that you can do this less often. The rest of the time, you just need to periodically refresh the napkins.
Using these recommendations, you will keep your pillow in good shape, and the most important attribute for sleeping will last a long time.
Read the short instructions included on the label. Proceed strictly following the recommendations. Many manufacturers prohibit washing in the washing machine. Despite this, housewives find ways to solve the problem through trial and error.
Based on their experience, certain conclusions can be drawn:
- Prepare detergents - washing pastes or gels. Do not use powders under any circumstances. Processing will be carried out at relatively low temperatures. There is a risk that the granules will not be washed and will cause stains on the fabric and an allergic reaction in humans.
- Do not soak pillows before washing as this will cause them to deform. Load only dry items. If the volume of the drum is large, you can fill it with towels so that the pillows interact less with the hard surface.
- Set the parameters at which the products will be washed - “delicate” or “manual” program, temperature up to 30 °C, completely turn off spinning and drying. If your equipment does not have suitable modes, simply reduce the speed to a minimum.
After machine washing, the pillow has lost its appearance: what to do?
