Knitted leg warmers are indispensable for sports, dancing, and are comfortable to train in. You can buy knitted leg warmers in the store, but the price does not always correspond to the quality. We suggest you knit leg warmers with your own hands. This is not difficult to do by choosing a good description and high-quality knitting materials.
Where to begin?
You can knit leg warmers in different ways: on 2 or 5 knitting needles in the round. In the first case, you will need to knit a rectangle (or trapezoid) and sew it to form a “pipe”. Such a product will be less elastic than one knitted on 5 knitting needles. If you know how to knit in the round, then take stocking needles, but if you don’t know how, then it’s time to learn with a simple product.
Before starting knitting, take measurements:
- leg circumference below the knee or above the knee, depending on the height of your product
- calf volume
- calf volume
- height of leggings
Based on the measurements obtained, create a pattern. If you knit in the round, you won't need a pattern.
Knitting the simplest leggings for beginners
Undoubtedly, knee socks associated with beautiful braids or openwork patterns look beautiful. But what should those who do not yet know how to knit complex patterns do? Or do you just want a minimalist model? For beginners, we recommend knitting with a simple pattern - rib 1*1 or rib 2*2 (alternating knit and purl stitches). At the top and bottom of the leg warmers, tie the elastic band tighter; to do this, take knitting needles 1 size smaller. The elastic is needed to prevent the knee socks from slipping while walking or running.
How to strengthen an elastic band when knitting?
In factory-made products, spandex is often added to the elastic so that it does not stretch during wear. We also recommend that you buy spandex threads from a craft store and add them when knitting the last row. Or you can lay one line with spandex along the inside, see photos with different options for using spandex:
What to wear with knitted leg warmers?
Warm gaiters will warm your legs up to the knee and above in cold weather. It is better to wear them with short dresses, shorts and skirts. It is worth choosing special shoes for them.
- Leg warmers are worn over sneakers, sneakers and short ankle boots.
- Also, high knee socks can peek out from the boots, then the top of the boots should be wider than usual.
- Since this is an additional accessory, you should think through your entire look so that knee socks go well not only with shoes, but also with outerwear.
Today we have prepared an excellent selection of patterns and descriptions for knitting a wide variety of leg warmers.

Description of knitting golf
Using white yarn, cast on 108 loops and join them into a circle. Knit 4-5 rows in stockinette stitch, then form cloves. They are created as follows: 1 yarn over, 2 knit stitches together.
Then they knit another 4-5 rows in stockinette stitch, bend the knitting in half along the openwork row, and before each loop, take one loop from the cast-on chain on the knitting needle and knit it together with the knit stitch. It is necessary to ensure that the loops coincide vertically, otherwise the edge will be crooked. An elastic band is threaded through this double edge. In the next row, every 5 loops, pick up a loop, knitting one loop twice - 1 knit, 1 crossed knit. So, there are 130 loops on the knitting needles. One row is still knitted with white yarn, then 2 rows of the pattern (Fig. 2) are knitted from medium-dark green and brown yarn. The next 7 rows are knitted with light green and brick yarn, 2 rows with completely light green yarn without a pattern. The pattern continues with 7 rows of medium green and 2 rows of dark green and brick yarn.
When the Christmas tree pattern of brick and green yarn is completed, knit 5 rows with white yarn. In the first row, 8 loops are decreased throughout the entire product, that is, in the middle and at the end of each knitting needle, 2 loops are knitted together.
Then follow stripes of white and green yarn of all shades as shown in Fig. 3. White check - white yarn, black check - the darkest shade of green, a cross - a lighter shade, an oblique stripe - an even lighter shade, two stripes - the lightest shade of green yarn.
These plain stripes and small pattern can be knitted according to the pattern, or the colors and width of the stripes can be selected to your liking.
When the length of the golf has reached 15 cm, the next 8 cm continue to be knitted in decreasing order. Decrease 17 times in a loop in every third row at the beginning of the first knitting needle, knitting 2 loops together with removal. At the end of the fourth needle, 2 loops together with a knit stitch.
Then they continue to knit another 8 cm without decreasing until the beginning of the heel, when they continue to knit the heel with white yarn on 88 stitches. Heel formation. All stitches are distributed evenly on 4 knitting needles. The heel is knitted with only two knitting needles - the 1st and 4th. In each front row, 1 loop is knitted, 1 is removed without knitting, in the back row all loops are purl.
In the quadrangular part of the heel, the number of rows should be equal to the number of loops on 2 knitting needles. The first loop is always removed without knitting, a chain is formed along the edges of the heel.
When the required length of the straight part of the heel is connected, the formation of the heel begins. All heel loops are divided into 3 equal parts. Only the middle part is knitted, the sides are reduced. Working from the wrong side, purl the last loop of the middle part with the first loop of the side part. Turn the work and knit the middle part with knit stitch, the 1st loop is always removed undone. When knitting from the front side, the last loop of the middle part is removed as in knitting, the 1st loop of the side part is knitted with the front one and the removed loop is put on the knitted one. The decrease is continued until only the middle part remains on the knitting needles. Reducing loops on the foot. After the heel is knitted, the side loops of the chain should be cast on the knitting needles (Fig. 4). To prevent holes from forming on the sides, the cast-on loops should be knitted crossed. Having counted the loops on the knitting needles, we make sure that their number is greater than before knitting the heel. All excess loops should be closed off. Decrease on the same knitting needles on which the heel was knitted. Decrease at the end of the 1st knitting needle, knitting 2 stitches together, and at the beginning of the 4th knitting needle with removal. Between each decreased row, knit 1-2 rows without decreasing. The decrease is continued until the number of stitches left on the knitting needles is the same as before the heel began to form.
The straight part of the foot is knitted up to the little toe.
Reducing stitches on the toe. In this case, the decrease at the toe forms a triangle. At the end of the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, the penultimate two loops are knitted together, and at the beginning of the 2nd and 4th knitting needles, one knitting loop is knitted, then 2 loops are knitted together. Decrease is repeated every second row. When half the stitches remain on the knitting needles, decrease in each row. Thread a previously torn thread through the last 8 loops and secure the end.

Crochet
Having studied the patterns for knitting leg warmers with knitting needles with a description, you can move on to crocheting, which also allows you to knit an analogue of the knee socks without socks in the round. Crochet produces a fairly dense fabric that will fit well around the ankle.
To work you need to take:
- a ball of plain yarn of medium thickness - 100 g;
- hook number 3.
Knitting description:
- The main pattern will be “elastic”. Cast on 36 chain stitches for one product and knit two rows with single crochets.
- Make a rise to the next row by knitting a row with a single crochet.
- In the second row and in each even row, continue to knit 2 single crochets, 1 loop, knit the loops from the previous row diagonally.
- The rapport is repeated until the end of the work.
This product can be knitted in the round or as a fabric, which then needs to be sewn.
Using simple patterns with simple patterns, every novice needlewoman will be able to knit simple and beautiful socks that will help emphasize the style and individuality of her image.
