Straight cut jeans in larger sizes are more convenient for sewing. In this case, cutting the bag will be more convenient, and the number of necessary seams will be reduced.

In general, anything that was present on old jeans will be suitable for decorating a bag: buttons, zippers, any stripes, a strap, rivets and even labels. If it has the name of a well-known company on it, then why not use it on a new thing?

What to make handles for a bag from old jeans?

When thinking about the details of a future bag, you can’t turn off your imagination. There are so many things around that can be turned into the same handles and strap!

The easiest option is to sew handles from the same jeans. To do this, cut the parts to the required length, sewing them in twos. The result is strong, practical handles. The handles look more decorative - braids. To create them, jeans are cut into a large number of long thin strips, their edges are processed and braided in any convenient way. Then they are secured and sewn to the bag.

If you have an old leather jacket or boots in the house that are also dreaming of a second life, you can cut them out.

Handles look stylish if they are sewn using the same fabric as for the lining. In this case, they are strengthened using sealing materials.

There are also almost ready-made options. For example, you can use a belt. In craft stores you can find it in different widths and almost any color. Chains are also suitable for these purposes. Thin ones will make the product more elegant, large ones will be a reference to the rock style.

We sew a denim bag with a flap decorated with a monkey's paw patchwork block

Many patchwork lovers keep old jeans in their “bins” in the hope of someday sewing something from them. And there are those who use old jeans as a source material for their patchwork creativity.

Like any housewife with a large family (son, daughter, grandson, husband, sister, in-law, brother and a bunch of other relatives), my house has a huge amount of denim clothes that have already “outlived their usefulness.” But “jeans” are a fairly durable and high-quality material, I couldn’t bear to throw it away. So the idea came to sew bags and backpacks from these things. And what? They will no longer shed or shrink. And denim is always in fashion.

Do you have old jeans? Let's give them a new life together!

I suggest you sew a bag with a flap decorated with a monkey's paw patchwork block. For such a bag we will need scraps from two jeans in contrasting colors, scissors, thread and needles, a zipper, lining fabric, paper, tracing paper, non-woven fabric, and a ruler. And of course, a good mood!

We make a pattern from paper: the base of the bag and the flap.

Let's start with the valve. We put tracing paper on the paper valve pattern and draw this template. Since we are using contrasting fabrics, this should be noted (shaded).

The basic sewing technique is familiar to many. We measure the inner squares, take into account the seam allowance, cut out two strips, from which we sew a two-color square.

We secure it in the center of the base with pins, matching the lines of the central stitches with the central lines in the drawing (do not forget about matching the colors).

Next, measure one of the triangles following the central square, add it to the seams and cut out a triangle from the fabric of the desired color.

We pin, stitch, turn, iron, straighten. And so, sequentially, the remaining triangles.

The first row is ready. We do the same with all the other rows, don’t forget about the colors. We make sure to iron every detail.

The result is such beauty.

Remove the paper (it comes off easily).

We attach the patchwork set to an adhesive base (non-woven fabric, dublerin), make a decorative stitch and adjust it according to the valve pattern. Sew on the piping (optional), cut out the denim lining and sew it face to face to the patchwork flap piece.

Turn it inside out, iron it, stitch along the edge. The valve is ready.

Let's start with the base of the bag. We take a pattern and cut 4 parts from denim and 4 parts from lining fabric. You can make a pocket on one of the jeans parts (this will be the back).

We immediately prepare the handle for our handbag (120 cm) and the strap on which the buckle will be held (11 cm). The width of both the straps and the handles for me is 2 cm in finished form, yours may be different - it depends on the width of the buckle.

We sew the handle and strap into denim inserts (6x6 cm squares, folded in half).

I use buckles, rivets, eyelets and other metal parts. Their installation requires special tools, but this can be done in a special workshop.

Now we collect the “carcass” of the bag. Take two denim pieces (those without pockets) and place them facing each other. We transfer the line of the inner seam from the pattern and sew it together.

Next, we take the back part (I have a pocket on it), measure 3 cm from the top, draw a line, attach the finished flap to it and attach it, departing 0.3 cm from the edge of the flap.

Turn it over to the face and add a decorative stitch, leaving a margin of 0.5 cm.

We pin the crossbars on which the handle is attached at a distance of 3 cm from the top of the “back” of the bag.

We attach the “back” to the lower panel of the central part and sew them together. To prevent the top panel from accidentally getting under the needle, we turn its edges under and pin it with pins.

Turn it inside out, making cuts in the corners - half of the bag is ready.

Now we pin the edges of the finished (back) half, place the front of the bag face down and stitch it in the same way as the back (don’t forget about the inserts!). We cut the corners and turn them inside out. The “carcass” is ready.

Let's move on to the lining. We put the two cut pieces face to face and sew them around the perimeter. We do the same with the other two parts. This makes two bags. We turn the entrance to the bag 1 cm, baste it and put it aside for a while.

Take the zipper, apply it to the entrance of the bag, add 5-6 cm, cut it off.

At the entrance to the bag, on both sides of the side seams, measure 1.5 cm to the center and make a mark.

We pin (or baste) the zipper, carefully tucking its beginning.

Sew from the edge 0.7 cm to the mark at the end of the zipper. We repeat the operation on the other side.

Carefully fold inward by 0.7-0.8 cm the edges of both sections of the bag, including those to which the zipper is sewn, and baste.

Now we take the previously sewn bags from the lining, put them (without turning them inside out) into each section of the bag, baste them to the jeans and make a stitch along the face of each section.

We put a slider and a stopper tail made of denim on the zipper.

Install the eyelets on the strap.

And the bag is ready!

A few words about decor and accessories. If you do not have the opportunity (or desire) to install rivets, eyelets and other attributes of the “denim” style, you can completely do without them. And the patchwork pattern on the valve can be anything. To confirm this, there is another handbag using the same pattern and sewing technology, which, it seems to me, looks no worse than the “heroine” of this master class.

I wish you success in your creativity!

How to decorate a new bag?

Jeans is a democratic and universal material. He is able to endure any flights of fancy. A bag made from it is decorated with a variety of elements:

  • decorative stitching with threads of a contrasting color;
  • appliqué;
  • embroidery;
  • rivets;
  • pins;
  • beads and rhinestones;
  • feathers;
  • inserts from other fabrics;
  • knitted or felted elements;
  • lace

It is not so easy to list all possible options. But so much the better: with such a wealth of possibilities, the chance to sew a truly unique thing that will attract attention, surprise and amaze increases significantly.

In addition, you can completely abandon the decor of a bag made of jeans when sewing. In this case, you will get a basic model that will harmoniously fit into a huge number of looks in a variety of styles, from sporty and casual to hippie and boho.

Unusual bag - fish made from jeans

The master class shows one of thousands of options for using leftover jeans. This is less of a master class and more of my experience in creating a small bag in the shape of a fish with a frame clasp. Because there were mistakes in the creation of this handbag, as well as their solutions.

For work you will need: jeans, a frame lock, lining fabric, metal fittings, paper, thread, scissors, a sewing machine, a little time and love.

We draw a pattern from the fabric (by the end of the master class I will correct it a little). We collect all the leftovers (pieces of denim) and get started.

Every housewife has a pair of old jeans. This has been one of the most popular types of clothing for many years. Denim fabric is quite strong, but it can also be too thick and therefore difficult to sew in several layers. But it does not crumble much, which allows you to create a beautiful edge for decorative work.

For our bag we will need a whole pair of jeans and also scraps of denim in different shades.

Master class on sewing bags

The first part of the selection of BAGS made from OLD JEANS

We sew a summer bag from denim belts

Many people are haunted by the question: what to do with old jeans? In this master class, I want to show you how to make a stylish bag in a couple of hours, which is perfect for walking, going to the beach, and for non-aggressive shopping).

We will need shirt fabric that will serve as both a base for sewing on denim stripes and a lining; straps for handles and denim stripes.

If you have enough patience, you can rip out the waistbands of a pair of jeans (using a razor or a seam ripper for this - this is a long but very meditative process that helps you relax after a crazy day). After stretching and washing, the belts present an incredibly beautiful sight - scuffs, creases, color transitions, fringes along the edges... Just what we need!

Cut out 2 rectangles of the required size from shirt fabric. Mine is approximately 35 x 35, but it can be larger, depending on what the bag is needed for. We place washed and ironed belts on this basis.

We fill the spaces between the belts with jeans stripes and pin them with pins. The more shades of blue you use, the more beautiful it is. Alternate dark and light stripes. If you don’t have a long enough whole piece, you can make it up from 2 or more. We pin all the strips together with pins and stitch along the edges of the strip on a machine.

Be prepared for the fabric to stretch, shift and become deformed. Therefore, secure with a sufficient number of pins, and adjust as you sew.

Back view.

The more longitudinal stitches we make, the more reliable the design will be. :)

Well, to make it even more decorative, we’ll add a thread of another color, make decorative stitching in the form of a zig-zag and sew a small patch horizontally.

We do the same with the second part of the bag.

It's convenient if your bag has a pocket. Or 2. We sew a pocket from 2 rectangles of shirt fabric; when finished it is 14 x 20 cm.

Sew the pocket on one side. And we make a line in the middle to make 2 pockets.

The stitching will be visible on the outside of the bag, which is good. The main thing is that they are neat, and the threads at the ends of the seams are cut off at the root.

Pockets are sewn.

The top edge of the bag can be processed using an overlocker, this will also add decorativeness.

Especially if thick contrasting threads are used.

Finished top edge.

Now we fold both parts of the bag and cut out 2 squares of approximately 4.5 x 4.5 cm on the bottom edge on both sides.

This will help to create a one-piece bottom for the bag.

Next, we sew the bag on 3 sides.

Iron the seams and process them using an overlocker.

If you don't have an overlocker, you can sew zig-zag seams.

Now you need to sew the bottom corners of the bag. To do this, the side and bottom seams are folded together, where we cut out the squares. It should look like this angle.

Let's stitch this corner. We process the seam.

When we turn the bag inside out, the bottom will look like this.

All that remains is to attach the handles. From the sling we cut out 2 pieces approximately 60 cm long. We place them on the front part of the bag, on top we place a long piece horizontally, preferably with a torn edge, and secure it with pins.

Now we need to stitch this flap in different directions so that the handles are held securely.

The bag is ready. Now - to the park / store / to the beach / for an exam - the bag will come in handy everywhere.

Good luck with your creativity!
