Is it possible to wash black clothes with things of a different color?

Wash by hand

It should be remembered that when washing a product, not only its color, but also the composition of the fabric is of great importance. If hand washing is recommended for items, as evidenced by the information on the label, it is better to follow the instructions and remember simple rules:

  • The more delicate the fabric, the lower the water temperature should be.
  • Existing stains must be removed before washing.
  • Black items require more thorough rinsing.

In the washing machine

If the clothing manufacturer recommends machine washing, you can proceed with confidence. Of course, we must not forget about pre-sorting the laundry by color and other important points:

  • Before loading it into the machine, it is better to turn the product inside out, this will help keep the front side looking longer.
  • The drum should not be fully loaded so that the quality of washing, rinsing and spinning is high.
  • The operating mode of the machine must be selected based on the composition of the material.

Detergents

Having decided on the type of washing, you need to take care of purchasing a high-quality detergent for black clothes. In this case, it is better not to use ordinary powders, since they are merciless to the black dye. As a result of washing with powder for white or colored laundry, whitish spots appear on dark items.

Professionals recommend using special liquid products - gels. Some of them are universal and suitable for washing black clothes of any composition. You can purchase gels that are designed not just for dark fabrics, but also for delicate fabrics.

More about combinations

In order not to fool yourself with an experimental selection of combinations, it is enough to study the advice from household experts below. Even if mixing is approved, this does not mean using the resources of the washing unit “to the maximum”, with high temperature, addition of bleach and spin at high speed.

Caution never hurt anyone. Therefore, we act carefully, weighing every step.

White with black

If you love everything unusual, and damage to your favorite thing is a trifle, an annoying misunderstanding, then feel free to mix white with black. For everyone else, such combinations are categorically not recommended. There is a 90% chance that a black item will stain a white item and ruin its appearance beyond recognition.

Washing modes at low temperatures and the use of special products for colored laundry will not help either. It has been noticed that white things turn gray over time, they need bleach. And black ones, on the contrary, “lighten” - special tinting mixtures and powders are used for them.

White with color

White things with colored ones form exactly the same explosive mixture as with dark, black ones. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a combination of a white T-shirt with a pink sundress or a bright blue jumper - the danger of ruining both items of clothing is very high. Exceptions include items made from some synthetic fabrics: they do not stain their “neighbors” and can be mixed within reasonable limits. But only after preliminary experiments, studying data on the composition of the fabric, processing modes, and washing.

White with gray

It would seem like a completely innocent combination. But, as a result of this action, the white will gradually turn gray, the gray will turn pale. Well, you can’t mix white things with others, that’s their nature. Otherwise, you will then have to face the problem of how to return the clothes to their original color. The use of bleaches, even delicate ones, gradually destroys the structure of the fabric. This means it spoils the thing and inevitably shortens its service life.

However, what if the item is two-color? How to properly wash white bed linen with red roses or a multi-colored T-shirt? Let's take a closer look at whether it is possible to wash black and colored clothes, and what to do with contrasting fabrics.

Removing stains

It is better to start washing any items with a preliminary inspection for stains. You can remove food and other stains from black clothes using certain proven means:

  • Vodka will rid the product of any, even old, stains left by deodorant.
  • Dishwashing liquid removes greasy food stains well. The cleansing effect will be enhanced by the addition of baking soda.
  • Glycerin mixed in a 1:1 ratio copes well with various stains.
  • Table salt dissolved in cool water is excellent for removing blood stains.

These products and solutions must be used to treat problem areas before washing.

Tips to prevent products from losing their black color

To maintain the saturation of the shade of a black product, you can use the following methods:

  • before washing, add a little table salt to the machine;
  • to fix the dye, soak the item for 30 minutes in a solution consisting of 1 tablespoon of vinegar per 1 liter of water;
  • Neutralize the dye-leaching chlorine in the water using regular baking soda.

After such manipulations, it is worth adding conditioner when rinsing. It will get rid of unnecessary odors.

If black clothes have already lost their original appearance, folk tricks can help:

  • A new faded item will “share” its dye with faded clothing and renew it.
  • If you add black tea before rinsing, the color of the product will be refreshed.
  • Natural ground coffee dissolved in hot water for 20-30 minutes will add richness to the color.
  • Cooled tobacco infusion (15-20 g per liter of boiling water) improves the color of black things.

And if traditional methods are not suitable, you can buy an industrial dye in the store.

So, it is better to wash black items separately from the rest, following the instructions on the label. It is also worth remembering to properly dry dark items. It is better to hang them in the shade in the wind or draft to avoid the harmful effects of sunlight and heating devices on color saturation.

How to wash faded items - methods for white items

If your favorite item faded during washing, what should you do in such a situation? Bleach and stain removers are the best way to remove faded stains.

If preference is given to store-bought products, pay attention to packaging marked White

Oxygen-based bleaches are the most effective. They are much preferable to those containing chlorine. In addition, they are gentle on fabric fibers and will not harm the skin.

Digestion

You can return the original whiteness to white things that have lost their color by boiling them down. A good helper for this will be laundry soap, which must be grated and added to cold water.

For 5 l. Half a bar of detergent is enough water. Bring water to a boil and simmer for 35–50 minutes. After this, leave the mixture until it cools completely and rinse well.

Washing with homemade stain remover

A homemade stain remover will help restore the original color of your clothes. It works especially well if the embroidery on faded clothes is completely smudged. This product will cope with colored stains and remove the yellowish tint from the product. Removing molting takes place in several stages:

  • stir 1 tbsp. l. regular salt with 0.5 tsp. citric acid, ammonia and 1/3 of a bar of laundry soap (it is better to grate it);
  • add 0.5 cups of warm water and stir well until the mixture turns into a paste;
  • Apply the mixture with a brush or sponge to faded areas.

After 8-10 hours, gently rub the affected areas and rinse thoroughly.

Soaking with hydrogen peroxide

An excellent stain remover that can cope with faded stains no worse than store-bought products is peroxide. For 1.5 liters of water you will need 50 ml of pharmaceutical preparation and 0.5 tsp. salt. All ingredients must be mixed well and heated.

Place the damaged item in a container with the solution and leave for 40–60 minutes. If the products are not bleached enough after the specified time, then it can be increased to 2–3 hours. This method is good for removing stains from white cuffs and collars.

Soaking with ammonia

An equally effective way to return things to their original whiteness is to use ammonia, which can be purchased at any pharmacy. This option is also the most budget-friendly and is suitable even for the most delicate fabrics that cannot be treated with aggressive bleaches from the store. To return whiteness, if a white item has faded, you need to do the following:

  • dilute 70 ml of ammonia in boiling water (3 l);
  • put the item in the solution and leave it in it for about 2 hours;
  • After this time, the clothes are thoroughly rinsed.

Since after rinsing the unpleasant smell of ammonia remains on the fibers of the fabric, it must be removed. To do this, the product is hung out to dry in the fresh air.

Washing with potassium permanganate

Another way to bleach fabric is to use potassium permanganate. Despite the fact that this product has a pink color, diluted in a weak concentration it can restore the original whiteness of the product. To prepare the mixture, you need to add a few crystals of the pharmaceutical drug to a bucket of very hot water. The mixture should be mixed well, otherwise streaks may remain on the fabric.

For maximum efficiency, you can supplement the solution with grated shavings from laundry soap (70%) or any washing powder. Place faded clothing in a bucket and keep it there for 3 hours. To make the effect of the mixture even stronger, you need to close the container with a tight lid. After the specified time, products that have lost their original appearance should be rinsed thoroughly.

Since potassium permanganate in combination with detergent makes fabric fibers stiff, you can add fabric softener to the water during the last rinse. Any will do (Lenor, Dosia, Cotico, Stork, Eared Nyan, etc.). This method can also be used to whiten baby clothes.

Whitening with aspirin

An excellent stain remover to keep on hand is regular aspirin. In order to remove faded items, you need to crush several tablets of acetylsalicylic acid and dilute them with water in a ratio of 1 to 2. The amount of aspirin will depend on the size of the damage to the fabric.

Apply the resulting mixture to the stain with a brush or sponge, gently rubbing into it. The acid contained in the tablets will help restore the original color. After 25–30 minutes, the item should be rinsed well. This method is great for removing faded stains from collars and cuffs.
