How to dye jeans: how and what to dye jeans at home quickly and easily (55 photos)

Powder paints

The choice of powder formulations is huge. They are easy to use and highly durable. Price category from 20 rubles per package.

Cheap options fit perfectly on the fabric and can withstand repeated washings; the only negative is the meager choice of palette.

Manufacturers of more expensive modern dyes have eliminated this shortcoming, and we can afford bright shades.

Tools for dyeing jeans

Let's prepare the “tools” before painting. We will need:

  • Jeans (be sure to wash them in advance without conditioner and dry them),
  • Dye,
  • Enameled deep container (pan, bucket, basin);
  • Gloves. A chemical burn has never made anyone happy;
  • Respirator. It is needed to avoid inhaling toxic fumes;
  • Table salt, baking soda;
  • Table vinegar.

Read the instructions for use carefully!

What to use for coloring

Of course, it’s much easier to go and buy jeans in the right shade, but no one guarantees that you will find a model that will fit your figure perfectly. This is why dyeing old favorites is so popular these days. By updating the shade, giving it depth and expressiveness, you will get a product that will look like new. So how can you dye your jeans black? We would like to bring to your attention several proven methods.

Changing the color of jeans with paint

Dissolve a packet of coloring powder in 0.5 liters of water, in a separate container (glass, ceramics) with warm water, stir thoroughly.

Strain the solution. To do this, you can use: a piece of old organza, tulle, gauze, cotton wool, which will hold undissolved particles.

Place clothes, prepared solution in a large saucepan and add water so that the liquid covers the pants.

Add salt or soda if the instructions require it. Bring to a boil and keep on fire for an hour.

Don't forget to stir and turn over. Otherwise the color will lie unevenly.

Leave the jeans to cool in the dye. Wash in warm, then cold water.

We fix the result with vinegar for at least 30 minutes. Fixative: vinegar 9% (3 tbsp per 1 liter of water) or vinegar essence 70% (2 tbsp per 1 liter of water).

Dyeing agents for denim fabric

Special paints for fabrics

There are numerous denim dyes available in the market that come in different shades and can be used for both hand and machine washing. Such products are offered in powder form and are used as follows:

  1. The solution must be diluted according to the instructions.
  2. The product is turned inside out.
  3. The machine selects the temperature required for the fabric being dyed.
  4. Next, the pants are placed in the automatic machine, and the powder composition is poured on top of them. Some products require preliminary dilution with water, but if the manual does not contain such a rule, they can be used in their pure form.
  5. It is forbidden to add fabric softener to the device, since its active substances can worsen the treatment result.
  6. Next, the optimal washing mode is selected. In most cases, “cotton or linen washing” is used, where the water temperature varies between +80...+90°C.
  7. After going through the wash cycle, the pants should be removed and rinsed by hand, using as much cool water as possible. A small amount of vinegar is also added to the liquid.
  8. Then you need to run a short washing program using washing powder.
  9. Drying jeans should occur naturally without the use of heating systems.

Hair dye

Hair tinting compounds are another good denim dye that provides a lasting and bright shade to the treated surface. To process jeans, you must follow these instructions:

  1. Prepare the composition of the desired color.
  2. Dilute the paint in any available way and add water to it.
  3. Immerse the product in the solution for 1.5-2 hours.
  4. Rinse your pants in water at room temperature, and then in cold water with the addition of salt and vinegar.
  5. Carry out a deep wash of jeans with detergent.
  6. Hang the product to dry outdoors.

Blue

A good dye for denim fabric is blue. It contains starch and blue dye, which reliably covers fabric surfaces and provides bright color. The method of application is as follows:

  1. Blue is diluted in cool water and diluted with warm liquid. The process must be carried out strictly according to the instructions. In most cases, for 1 kg of tissue you will need 0.3-0.5 g of active ingredient.
  2. Clean pants are leveled and immersed in the solution.
  3. The product must completely saturate the fabric so that the paint is evenly distributed over the surface.
  4. Depending on the required shade, after 2 or 12 hours you need to take out the jeans and rinse 2-3 times. At the last stage, table salt or vinegar is added to the water in a proportion of 5-7 tbsp. l. for 10 l.

Before you dye your jeans blue, you need to take into account that it is easy to wash off from the surface.

White

In search of effective means for changing the color of jeans, you can take “Whiteness”. With its help, it is possible to achieve the blue tint “varenki”, which was very popular several decades ago.

To get the shade you will need to do the following:

  1. Prepare 250 ml of the composition and dilute it in 10 liters of water.
  2. Roll up the pants and tie them with an elastic band.
  3. Immerse the item in the container until it is completely saturated with the solution.
  4. Boil for 15 minutes, keeping submerged.
  5. Ventilate the kitchen when boiling, as the fumes from “Belizna” emit an unpleasant odor.

Potassium permangantsovka

Using potassium permanganate you can make jeans more original and restore their brightness. When using the product, you must adhere to the following guidelines:

  2. Dilute the composition with water in a ratio of 2:1.
  3. Roll the jeans into a rope and tie them with elastic bands.

You can restore the color of jeans or paint over a white spot on blue jeans using brilliant green paint. The diamond composition gives the surface an emerald hue and makes your favorite pants stylish.

First you need to dilute the medicine in water. In most cases, for 5 liters of water you need only 10 ml of brilliant green, i.e. standard pharmacy bottle. The ingredient is thoroughly mixed, after which the pants are immersed in the bucket and kept there for 30 minutes. The product must be turned over regularly to ensure an even color. Then it is taken out and rinsed 2-3 times using vinegar.

Acrylic paints

Good denim paint can consist of acrylic elements. A wide selection of shades is available for sale: from neon to noble silver. Painting compositions based on acrylic are characterized by water solubility, so they evenly cover the product. With the help of such means you can apply any design to the surface.

The method of application is as follows:

  1. Clean pants are turned inside out.
  2. The paint is diluted in water according to the instructions.
  3. Then a design or stencil is applied to the jeans and carefully ironed.

This action does not require much effort, but the painting result cannot be maintained for a long time. After some time, the picture will be erased and the contours will be washed away.

Aerosol

Aerosol paints work on a similar principle. They are sprayed only on a flat and clean surface.

Aniline dyes

Aniline-based products have been in demand for many years, and today they are used to fix paint or create beautiful scuffs on jeans. When applying the composition, the following rules must be taken into account:

  1. Liquid dyes are the most convenient to use - they do not need to be diluted in water.
  2. For easy processing, the product should be applied with soft brushes with squirrel or ferret bristles.
  3. Aniline is able to flow beautifully over the fabric, which gives it an interesting effect.
  4. To obtain a beautiful and original pattern, dissolved gelatin is added to aniline.

Dillon

To add originality to old jeans, you can use a product called Dilon. One package is suitable for coloring several products. The processing process occurs in the following order:

  1. Dyeing jeans in the washing machine means choosing the cycle with the hottest liquid.
  2. The product is added to the powder compartment.
  3. Then a clean item is immersed in the drum and the washing cycle starts.
  4. After completing the treatment, you need to run a second wash and apply a powder with a non-aggressive composition.
  5. At the end, the rinsing option is turned on and the product is dried in air.

Herbs, berries, vegetables

There are also affordable denim dyes that can be found in every kitchen. Depending on the required shade, you can use the following folk remedies:

  1. Onion peels and carrots - allow you to get an orange tint.
  2. Turmeric and dried calendula – yellow.
  3. Tea leaves, oak bark – brown.
  4. Raspberry and cherry – pink.
  5. Sorrel root is green.
  6. Blueberries - blue.
  7. Blackberries – grey.

To treat jeans using these methods, you need to squeeze out the juice and make a herbal decoction. Then you need to immerse your pants in a container with natural dye and keep it there for several hours. Next, the product needs to be rinsed with a solution of salt or vinegar and dried outside.

Painting in the washing machine

The second way is to use a washing machine.

  • Prepare the coloring solution as in the previous version;
  • Place jeans in washing machine;
  • Pour the paint into the air conditioner compartment, or better yet, into the drum of the machine;
  • Set the longest washing mode (t not lower than 90℃);
  • Rinse the painted item in clean water;
  • Fix the color with vinegar;
  • We wash jeans as usual (t no higher than 40℃).

Possible problems and errors

  • If powder paints are poorly diluted, the color of things will be uneven and stains will form on them.
  • If you choose the wrong time for painting or washing temperature, the paint will quickly wash off.
  • If stains are not removed from clothing or dirt is not washed off first, these areas will be more noticeable after dyeing and will take on a different color.
  • The dye is added only to the washing machine drum; it cannot be mixed with powder, conditioner and other detergents.
  • With an expired dye or a preparation whose characteristics do not suit the type of fabric, the result will be unpredictable.

Advantages and disadvantages of various methods

So, we list the advantages and disadvantages of some painting methods:

  • Potassium permanganate. This method will require some skill on your part. It would be a stretch to call it simple. But as a result, you can achieve the effect of washed jeans that never go out of style.

  • Blue. It is the most affordable budget coloring product. The advantages include ease of use, but the disadvantages include low color stability to the external environment. It washes out with every wash and requires constant renewal of intensity.
  • Aniline based paints. The instructions on the packaging describe the entire process in detail. The main thing is to strictly follow the application plan. Unique is the ability to mix different shades of the product to obtain fundamentally new colors.

  • Acrylic paints. They have increased durability. As soon as they dry, they immediately stop responding to external influences until boiled or washed with powder.
  • Dyes in powder. You can easily and simply use powder options when running things through an automatic machine. This process is the least troublesome, but you don’t have to expect rainbow shades.

Where to dye jeans?

Enameled dishes, glass, and ceramic are suitable. In principle, at home you can use a bathtub or plastic buckets, but then you will have to wash them for a long time.

We repeat the same procedure with potassium permanganate. Such partial coloring looks beautiful on light-colored items. The shade depends on the concentration of manganese in the water (from pale pink to dark purple).

This coloring lasts a long time on denim items and looks impressive for mere pennies!

How to dye blue jeans

Let's move straight to the description of the means with which you can restore the rich blue color of your jeans.

The classic denim color indigo has many shades and has not lost its popularity over the years.

Traditional denim dye used to be made from the Indian indigo plant, from which it gets its name. Its color is characterized as intermediate between dark blue and violet. To dye jeans at home and provide them with an even and lasting blue color, use ready-made textile paints and available products.

Blue

Blue in the form of a solution or powder is one of the most affordable and easy-to-use dyes.

The blue contains the organic dye “methylene blue” and starch.

Dyeing jeans blue is quite simple - you don't even have to boil them. It is enough to make a saturated concentrated solution using cool water (about 30 ℃) with the addition of 1-2 tbsp. l. salt for color fastness, and immerse things in it. It is recommended to soak jeans for 1.5-2 hours or even the whole night, and it is important to ensure that the fabric is completely immersed in water. After soaking, the jeans are placed in a cold vinegar solution for 10-15 minutes.

Drying painted items is necessary in a straightened form; it is best to lay them out on a horizontal surface. Otherwise, water flowing down the folds will wash away the color, making it uneven.

A serious disadvantage of blue dyeing is that the color fades quite quickly with subsequent washes, and the procedure will need to be repeated regularly.

Dylon

Dylon is one of the new household chemicals designed for both washing and tinting denim. The product is convenient, economical and quickly gaining popularity among fans of classic denim.

Aniline dyes for fabric

The use of aniline dyes for blue jeans has some peculiarities.

If you want to dye your jeans, keep in mind that all the decorative thread stitching (traditional yellow-orange shades) will also dye and become the same color as the fabric

When using aniline dyes, table salt must be added for color fastness. Details of the technology and the required proportions must be indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging. Typically, a bag of powder paint is designed for 7-10 liters of water. It is first diluted in a small volume, achieving complete dissolution, and then poured into the full volume of water. Add salt (100 g) there and mix thoroughly. Things to be dyed are immersed in a container in a straightened form and make sure that they are completely covered with the solution.

Ready-made paints in liquid forms wash out faster and are more suitable for refreshing the base tone. To properly dye jeans or completely change their original color, it is advisable to choose paints in the form of powder formulations.

Don't be afraid to experiment and give new life to your favorite things!
