We invite you to master another type of needlework and learn how to sew beautiful and practical pillows for different purposes. There are pillows for sleeping and special pillows for pregnant women, there are pillows for a crib, and various types of decorative interior pillows - all of them will bring coziness and comfort to your home , especially if you make them with your own hands.

Practical pillows

Such pillows are used for relaxation. They are usually shaped like a square or rectangle and are characterized by softness and comfort.

The only decoration of such sleeping accessories are pillowcases. For the most part, these pillows spend most of their life in bed drawers or under covers.

Filling

The foam pillow seemed very hard to me, so I decided to fill it with batting on both sides. To do this, you need to evenly distribute the batting or padding polyester on both sides. I started by covering the foam rubber. I cut out two squares according to the dimensions of the workpiece (plus seam allowances), as well as a strip of fabric, the length of which is equal to the length of the perimeter, and the width is equal to the height of the foam (plus also seam allowances).

First, I pinned the fabric together (directly on the foam), and then removed the “pillowcase,” machine stitched three sides, put it on again, and closed the fourth side. After this, I ended up with a covered foam rubber onto which layers of batting or padding polyester can be attached.

I spread it over both surfaces and carefully sewed it on by hand using a needle and thread (if you do this, the filler will not roll and form lumps).

What to stuff a pillow with?

It’s worth noting right away that it’s better not to use cotton wool for stuffing - it will get tangled quite quickly. Better take padding polyester. True, if you use the pillow for its intended purpose, it will also lose a little in volume.

Advice! The ideal option for stuffing would be padding polyester or fibertech, which can be purchased at a fabric store. These materials are unique in their kind, because they do not bunch up, do not cake, are absolutely hypoallergenic and, in addition, retain their fluffiness and volume even after washing.

Pillow shapes

Traditional rectangular pillows can be combined with cylindrical bolsters or round puffs. Both of them are mainly used to decorate the room.

Small hard pads are called dumochek. They are richly decorated with embroidery, fringe, tassels,

Figured pillows are usually made in the form of numbers, letters or hearts, which until recently were in great demand.

You can make a pillow yourself in absolutely any shape, if you wish.

How to sew a pillow from leftover fabric

If there is no suitable fabric, but you don’t want to go to the store or your wallet doesn’t allow it, then you can use scraps and scraps of old things or materials that are left over after upholstering furniture. The general instructions are:

  • Development of a diagram and order of arrangement of elements on the front side of the pillowcase;
  • Cutting leftover fabric according to the pattern;
  • Sewing elements and decorating them with lace, braid and other elements.

Sewing a pillow from leftover fabric is easy.
Another way is to use stencils and acrylic paints on the fabric. After sewing the cover, the design is applied to the front part with a pencil and then painted over.

Important! Drawings with black outlines look interesting. Such products can be presented to family and friends, depicting their hobbies or names on them.

Sewing a pillowcase is easy. To do this, take a pattern of the desired size or make your own. But each fabric has its own nuances. For a beginner, it is better to choose fabrics that are not capricious and do not stretch. The cut out parts are basted and stitched on a machine on three sides. If the pillowcase must be fastened, then sew on buttons or a zipper. It is better to make several pillowcases so that you can change them periodically.

DIY decorative pillow covers

Styling covers to resemble flowers and bouquets is an original solution. Covers, or pillowcases, will be an excellent decoration. Ideas for decorative covers:

  1. One large flower on a contrasting background. Each petal is cut out, its edge is processed, and the center and petals are sewn onto the base. Such a voluminous pillow will be an accent in the room.
  2. Bouquet. You can sew several flowers on a pillowcase in the form of a bouquet. The easiest to implement are rose buds.
  3. Flower meadow. In order to “plant” it, you need a fairly large base, that is, a ready-made pillow. Here it is better to use small flowers and supplement them with leaves, grass, or even bugs. It all depends on the style of the room for which the pillow is created.
  4. Embroidered flowers. Moreover, embroidery can be done flat (satin stitch or cross stitch) or with ribbons.

What types of decorative pillows are there?

Simple sofas are in greatest demand. But besides them, there are many design solutions:

  • curly (can be used instead of soft toys);
  • flat (ideal for stools and chairs);
  • soft, different sizes (the best choice for a bed).

Pillows can be sewn in the shape of a circle, oval, square, rectangle, or cylinder. Particularly interesting are specimens in the form of insects, hearts, letters, flowers, and animal figures. Don't be afraid to fantasize!

Separately, it is worth noting such a variety as a do-it-yourself pillow for pregnant women. This accessory relieves stress from the pelvis and lower back and allows you to take any comfortable position. So, if a woman is expecting a child, he is irreplaceable.

The fabric for sewing a pillowcase must meet the following requirements:

  • density;
  • wear resistance;
  • environmental Safety;
  • pleasant to the touch.

Therefore, the most common cases are:

  • velvet;
  • satin;
  • denim;
  • brocade;
  • cotton;
  • linen;
  • leather.

They are decorated with tassels, lace, ruffles, clips, and draperies. Today, pillows are also made from old clothes (textured jumpers, plaid shirts, blouses with unusual patterns). Here it is important not to forget to process the edges and use a gasket for particularly difficult materials.

Pillowcases should be easy to remove for washing or replacement. Usually the filling is placed in the pillow itself. However, it is also possible to stuff the stuffing directly into the decorative cover. The latter method allows you to save money, but externally such an accessory looks much worse.
