Bed linen - standards
Many people know that linen sets are divided into categories depending on the size of the bed:
- 1 bedroom;
- 1.5 bedroom;
- 2 bedroom.
In addition, there are types of kits:
- children's;
- "Euro";
- "euro maxi";
- family.
The classic set consists of 4 items: two pillowcases, a sheet and a duvet cover.
The exception is the family kit. It is also called five-subject. Instead of one large one, manufacturers put two medium-sized duvet covers in it.
Each category has its own standard of sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers.
Single sets
The popularity of single bedding has declined sharply since the early 2000s. Either the apartments have become larger, or the people are wider... It is unknown. But the fact that such kits can no longer be found on sale is a well-known fact. However, the standard in Russia for single beds is still in effect. According to GOST, adopted in 2005, the dimensions are as follows:
- pillowcase – 70x70 cm;
- sheet No. 1 – 120x203 cm;
- sheet No. 2 – 120x214 cm.
Where is the duvet cover, many will ask? He's gone. Instead of a single bed, the set previously included a one-and-a-half bed.
Today, single sets have been replaced by one-and-a-half sets. They are suitable for both old and new beds.
Suitable underwear for single beds can be found from foreign manufacturers. In the USA, 1-bed sets consist of a sheet 99x191 cm (with elastic), a duvet cover 170x220 cm, pillowcase 51x76 cm. In Europe, accessories marked “1-bed” have dimensions of 90x190, 145x200 and 51x76/65x65 cm, respectively.
One and a half bed linen
One-and-a-half-size bed linen is perhaps the most common. Basically, such sets are intended for one person, but they are also suitable for two people of medium build.
Bed linen sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Few people adhere to GOST. And abroad they still have their own standards.
In Austria and Germany, sets often do not include a sheet. It is purchased separately. Italy is famous for its narrow duvet covers up to 140 cm wide (in a one-and-a-half set).
A 1.5-bed set made in Russia most often consists of:
- pillowcases (2 pcs.) – 70x70 cm;
- sheets – 150x220 cm;
- duvet cover – 145x215 cm.
Double and Euro
They are in high demand among married couples. Double and Euro sets are suitable for a standard double bed. Instead of two pillowcases, you can often find four in a set: two regular and two decorative.
Despite the same popularity, the sets differ significantly in size:
- Double bed linen is mainly produced in Russia and China (rarely in Germany). They are designed for a bed with a width of 140–150 cm.
- Eurosets come in two types: Queen (standard) and King (maxi). They are much larger than the classic double version. The difference in width can be 40 cm or more.
Family
Many people know the set as “Duet”. This is the one that comes with two duvet covers instead of one.
Sometimes married couples cannot share a double blanket and constantly pull it over. Then the idea arises of using separate blankets, which, of course, require the same bedding. The family set completely solves the problem of finding and selecting products of suitable colors. It usually includes a double sheet, two 1.5 double duvet covers, and one or two pairs of pillowcases.
"Euro" standard
Euro bed linen is the most voluminous and is suitable for a family bed with a high mattress and a bed width of 160–180 cm.
Many people are interested in the question: the size of a “euro” is how many in cm? In European sets, duvet covers have a width of 200 cm, and sheets - from 220 cm.
The “standard” variety is more common than the “maxi” variety. Linen is sewn in Russia, China and Turkey. In imported versions, pillowcases are often rectangular in shape.
"Maxi Euro"
A truly “royal” set of impressive size. Its dimensions speak for themselves:
- duvet cover – 220x240 cm;
- sheet – up to 290x310 cm.
Maxi sets are not always found on store shelves. Beds with a sleeping area of 180–200 cm are not so rare, but blankets measuring 220x240 cm are.
Child (in a crib)
For adult sets, the difference between sizes is not too great. They have approximately the same equipment. Another thing is a children's set. It happens:
- For newborns. In addition to standard accessories, it often includes bed rails (bumper), canopy, pillow and blanket. The sheet may seem large - 100-120 by 150 cm. But this is more of a plus than a minus. This way you can cover it well.
- For the nursery group. The sizes are practically no different from sets for newborns. The only thing is that you will no longer find sides and a canopy in it.
- Teenage. And here is the most interesting thing. Apparently, manufacturers believe that after nursery, children get an adult bed (which is often true). Therefore, the next size of children's underwear corresponds to a full size one and a half. But! In it you will find one pillowcase instead of two. You will also delight your child with “childish” colors.
The larger the sheet, the better it can be fixed to the mattress and the less it will bunch up and move out.
Standard sizes of one and a half sets from foreign manufacturers
In addition to domestic manufacturers, you can purchase a set of bed linen from abroad. For example, on the market today there are bedding sets from Austria, Italy, Germany and Turkey.
One-and-a-half size foreign-made PCBs are designated as extra long single or 1.5-bed. Each country may have its own standards regarding bedding sizes. But it is still possible to derive some basic parameters of a 1.5 sleeping set that you may encounter when purchasing.
Bed sheet: from 160×220 to 180×260 cm.
Duvet cover: from 140×205 to 180×210 cm.
Pillowcase: 50×70 or 70×70 cm.
The contents of the sets may also differ from the Russian ones. For example, German and Austrian sets often do not have a sheet. In addition, the standard pillow size may vary from country to country. For example, in France the pillows are 65 by 65 cm, and in Germany they are 80 by 80 cm. Accordingly, the pillowcases in the set will be the same size. Another well-known supplier of bed linen to our country is, of course, China, but bedding from the Middle Kingdom is similar in parameters to domestically produced sets.
Bed linen sizes - table
In Russia you can find bed linen of various sizes. Its tailoring has not been regulated by GOST for a long time. Each manufacturer uses its own sizing chart. In addition, the market is full of foreign-made goods.

European standards
The size scale for beds followed by European furniture manufacturers suggests slightly greater comfort for two. The European standard starts from 160 cm, and the Russian one – from 140 cm. But this is where the differences end, and then the size range is the same. The standard length is also the same.
If you see the marking “euro beds” in a furniture showroom or online store, then the size of the product will be 180x200 cm.
Existing standards are the same for domestic and European manufacturers, and the dimensions of a double bed - 160/180/200 cm - allow you to select the appropriate mattress and bed linen.
And the difference with the English or American sizing chart can complicate the selection of a mattress. It will be big for a European bed. Therefore, those who prefer foreign-made furniture are recommended to buy the entire set at once, so as not to have to spend money on making a custom-made mattress.
Standard bed sheet size
As already mentioned, there are no standards for sheets. It is chosen depending on the size and depth of the mattress. It is important that its end is completely hidden. Therefore, the size of the canvas should be larger than the sleeping area. The calculation is made as follows:
- Product length = length + one mattress depth.
- Product width = width + two mattress depths +5–10 cm.
For high mattresses with a depth of 30 cm, a Euro sheet is well suited.

How to choose a double bed
Properly chosen furniture for relaxation eliminates discomfort, pain in the back, muscles, and numbness in the limbs. When choosing bedroom furniture, take into account the following:
- object size, shape;
- design features of the frame (supporting backrests, racks);
- the raw materials from which the stock is made (natural wood, metal, pressed chipboards, fiberboard, thick plastic);
- bed base (flexible slats, metal gratings);
- lifting mechanisms (spring, manual, gas lift);
- folding or transformable;
- back (headboard) presence or absence;
- style, design (Asian, Provence, eco-style);
- mattress (orthopedic, anatomical);
- accessories (canopy, lighting, mirror inserts, fall protection);
- Availability of storage space (drawers).
What to consider when choosing a bed size
The choice of bed size depends on:
- from the footage of the room where it will stand;
- on the number of people who will use it;
- from height, physique, habits, needs of a person.
Width main indicator
The width of a double bed depends on its intended purpose - for children, teenagers, adults. The width standard of 140 cm is considered the smallest for a double bed. Suitable for small apartments. Suitable for children, teenagers, thin people. The best width for two is 1.60-1.80-2 m.
Optimal length
European standard length 2-2.10 m, designed for average human height. Longer than 2.20 m for tall people.
What size double bed is most comfortable?
When choosing a double bed, focus on personal needs and preferences. Generally accepted standards are 1.60x2 m, 1.80x2 m.
What bed size should I choose for two?
In order for each person to have the opportunity to rest comfortably without touching the other, the dimensions of the double bed should be 0.20 m longer in length than the tallest of the two, and at least 1.40 m in width. If both or one of the partners is of a larger build, the best width 1.60-1.80 m.
Anatomical features of sleeping people
Anatomical features of a person include height, physique, and excess weight. Diseases of the respiratory tract, lungs, and spine affect the quality of sleep. The position of the body during rest - on the back, side, stomach - affects health. An uncomfortable posture can provoke the development of snoring, sleep paralysis, improper functioning of the digestive system, heartburn, and pain in the spine.
Headboard options
The headboard of the sleeping bed is the main decorative element of the bedroom. It can be soft or hard. Upholstered headboard - genuine leather, suede, tapestry, velor, other suitable textiles. Hard – wood, forged metal, plastic, plaster, natural stone, mirror cloth. The headboard is attached to the bed or to the wall, depending on the model. Headboard options can be country, eco, classic, baroque, modern, minimalism. Appearance depends on style.
Size options for fitted sheets
A sheet with an elastic band is an indispensable thing for those who like to toss and turn in their sleep. It resembles a cover that sits tightly on the mattress. It is very easy to choose a product:
The dimensions of the product correspond to the sleeping place.
That is, there is no need to add anything. As a rule, they are suitable for any mattress height in the range of 17–30 cm. Some manufacturers specifically specify this detail. For example: 160x200(30). By the way, sheets with elastic are also available for round beds.
Round bed sizes
For those who value creativity in everything and design delights, the furniture market offers its own non-standard ideas. A round bed is just one of these ideas. Moreover, the range of round designs is replenished every year: there are options with a soft round mattress, there are with a rectangular sleeping place located in the center of the circle, there are collapsible ones, consisting of several modules.
However, for all their attractiveness, round shapes require a spacious room and an appropriate interior. The fact is that the smallest, intended for two, has a diameter of 220 cm, and this is slightly larger than the standard size of beds. If a standard rectangular double mattress 160x200 cm is built into the base, then the diameter of the circle will be at least 260 cm.
Round beds provide maximum comfort; they do not have sharp corners or hard bases; you can sit on them at any angle. If drawers, cabinets, tables are built into the headboard, this will increase the functionality of the furniture.
But such a bed also has enough disadvantages. In addition to choosing free space for placing large-sized furniture, difficulties may arise with the selection of suitable textiles. Bed linen, bedspreads and round blankets will have to be sewn to order.
Standard duvet cover size
Modern duvet covers come in different widths. Domestic products are narrower: 145, 175, 200 and 220 cm. And foreign duvet covers of the same range are 5–15 cm wider. They are also chosen according to the size of the duvet:
Blanket Size Chart (cm) | |
Children's (depending on age) | 90 x 90; 100 x 135; 100 x 140; 100 x 150; 110 x 140; 120 x 140; 142 x 210; 145 x 210 |
One and a half (for one) | 140 x 205; 150 x 210; 155 x 210; 160 x 210; 130 x 220; 140 x 220 |
Double (for two) | 150 x 220; 170 x 205; 175 x 205; 180 x 210; 195 x 215; 200 x 200; 200 x 220 |
"Euro" (for two) | 155 x 215; 195 x 210; 205 x 210; 200 x 220; 220 x 240; 240 x 260 |
Set size | Duvet cover |
One and a half | From 143x210 to 160x230 |
Double (Russian standard) | From 175x210 to 180x220 |
Double (European standard) | From 200x220 to 215x220 |
King size (euro maxi) | From 220x240 to 240x260 |
Family (two duvet covers) | From 143x210 to 160x230 |
Use a sewing tape measure to measure your blanket. Add 5–10 cm in length and width. This will be the recommended duvet cover size.
After washing and drying, bedding often shrinks. This is especially evident in products made from natural fabrics. Shrinkage in the range of 2–5% is considered an acceptable norm.
What dimensions are considered standard?
Furniture manufacturers all over the world, including in Russia, adhere to established standards, even though they use different measurement systems (in centimeters or inches). The dimensions of the beds (width and length) are set taking into account the comfortable placement of people of average build and height no higher than 175 cm.
For domestic furniture factories, the standard size of a double bed cannot be less than 140 cm in width, the European scale starts from 160 cm, all subsequent parameters are the same. The dimensional step is 10 cm. The maximum width is 200 cm. The standard length is 200 cm.
People with other physiological parameters (heavy weight, tall height) or those who prefer more space for sleeping should study the sizes of double beds before purchasing.
Beds produced by factories in Australia, the USA and England have different dimensions. In English-speaking countries, Standard King, Eastern King and King labels are used. Standard “royal” inches when converted to the metric system will look like this:
- minimum width – 183 cm (made in Australia and Great Britain);
- maximum width – 213 cm (made in the USA);
- length – 198 cm (UK) or 203 cm (Australia and USA).
The cost of the product will depend on the country of production, the material and design solutions, and the width. If you consider that the bed should last for many years, then you should opt for a high-quality wide model.
Optimal width
Statistics show that beds with a standard width of 160 cm are in greatest demand among married couples. But choosing a bed for two based only on consumer demand data is not entirely the right decision. The width of the bed can be larger or smaller if you take into account several important points when choosing.
First you need to decide on the location. In a small bedroom, a wide bed will clutter the space and look awkward. If every centimeter counts in a small apartment, then you can install a double bed that is a few centimeters wider, but still gain space for a closet or a home mini-office.
An unusually large one requires a spacious bedroom and subtle design taste in order to create a cozy atmosphere and prevent disruption of the style of the room. You may also have difficulty finding the right size mattress and bedding.
But it is still more important to take into account, when choosing the optimal width of a double bed, the preferences and habits of the people who will have to rest on it at night. In order not to make a choice by eye, experts recommend calculating a comfortable space like this: lying on your back, place your palms on your chest and spread your elbows to the sides, then turn on your side and bend your legs. Sleep will be sound and restful if there is still 10-15 cm left from the elbows and knees to the edge of the bed.
Some furniture stores allow this “trying on” to be done right in the store. If this is not possible, you need to prepare in advance by taking measurements at home.
Those who prefer to sleep on their stomach, or sleep restlessly and often roll over, should add a few more centimeters when calculating. And for those couples who prefer to sleep in an embrace, roomy but compact sleeping places (140-150 cm) are suitable.
Larger people also need more space to sleep, but there should be space left for the person sleeping next to them. Therefore, a 190 cm mattress may be the optimal choice.
Length selection
With a variety of bed sizes in width, the length of the bed does not have such a spread. The standard provides for 190-200 cm, and this length suits most people. Indeed, to approve this parameter, the formula was taken into account: average height plus 20 cm.
A person will sleep comfortably and comfortably if he is placed on the bed with his legs straightened, and his heels do not hang down or rest against the backrest. The buyer should apply this “rule of comfort” when choosing mattresses for beds.
Tall people may have a problem with choosing furniture for sleeping, because even “royal” parameters may be small for some. The largest (220 cm) are round and classically shaped bamboo beds. If you cannot choose the appropriate length from the range of mass-produced furniture, then there is only one way out: to make an individual order. Many factories willingly “correct” the finished frames of their products chosen by a tall person. However, the mattress will have to be ordered separately.
Select by height
Beds can be with or without legs, with drawers at the base or with a lifting mechanism, but there is no regulation on height. The size of the beds and the standard for this parameter are determined by the style of the interior. For Japanese or Moorish style, a low bed (20-30 cm) is suitable, and for American or country style – a high one (70 cm).
Choosing a double bed with a built-in drawer is preferable for small bedrooms, as it provides additional storage space for linen and belongings. The average height is 50-60 cm.
It should be remembered that the height of the bed is made up of the dimensions of the frame and mattress, so when purchasing, you need to think not only about how the furniture will fit into the interior, but also about the comfort of the people for whom it is intended. A bed that is too low will be difficult for a fat person and those of above average height to sit on, while a bed that is too high will cause inconvenience for older people.
Standard pillowcase size
With “clothes” for pillows, the situation is a little simpler. The standard sizes of pillowcases are generally considered to be:
- 50x70 cm – for rectangular-shaped products;
- 70x70 cm – for square-shaped products.
At the same time, many manufacturers produce identical sets with the ability to choose the size of pillowcases. For orthopedic pillows, pillowcases are sold separately. They are of non-standard size. Can be with elastic and zipper.
The most important criterion for bed linen is not the composition of the fabric, not the spectacular pattern or completeness. Choosing underwear starts with size. The duvet cover should exactly follow the shape of the blanket. It is better to choose a sheet that is longer and wider than the mattress by 20–70 cm (if it is not elastic). Having chosen the right size, you can safely move on to the aesthetic side of the issue. Fortunately, the range of colors and prints of lingerie today is very large!
Tips for choosing bed linen and bedspreads
These textiles should ideally fit a double bed of standard sizes or furniture of non-standard dimensions. For the latter, choosing textiles is quite difficult, but when it comes to standard designs, before purchasing you need:
- Make sure that the width of the bedspread is not less than the sleeping area (you choose the size of the sheet in the same way).
- Measure the seam allowance on each side; it should be 25–27 cm.
- Take into account the presence of furniture legs. If you want to hide them, the bedspread should be at least 60 cm larger than the standard bed dimensions.
- Decide where the furniture will stand - against the wall or in the center of the room. In the first case, there will be no allowance on one side.
The size of the blanket and bed linen is selected based on the length and width of the mattress. Most domestic factories manufacture their products with an eye to the standard dimensions of beds according to GOST standards:
- duvet cover - 210 × 180 cm;
- sheet - 210 × 175 cm;
- pillowcase – 70 × 70 cm.
Euro bedding has its own duvet cover, sheet and pillowcase sizes - 200 × 220, 220 × 240 and 50 × 70 cm, respectively.
If it is not possible to take accurate measurements, it is better to choose wide and long underwear: the sheet can always be folded in half, and the pillowcase can be folded. If the textiles turn out to be less than needed, this problem will no longer be solved. It should be noted that bedding belongs to the category of products that cannot be returned after purchase, even due to discrepancies in dimensions.
Before purchasing a Euro or standard size bed, you need to take all the necessary measurements. Only after this can you begin to choose the design of the product. The sleeping bed should not clutter up the space, so you should focus on compactness and ergonomics. Decor is of secondary importance compared to the individual dimensions of the furniture.
