What prompted me to write this post was a bunch of mistakes I made when sewing curtains and the experience I gained as a result of my creative torment.

No matter how beautiful the furniture we put in, there is no comfort without curtains! The time has come to replace the old curtains in my apartment, which have served me faithfully, with new ones. I decided that I would be quite capable of sewing curtains myself. The last time I sewed curtains and tulle was probably 25 years ago. To update the “wardrobe” of my window, we purchased: chocolate-colored satin curtain fabric 3.5 meters, a white veil - 5 meters, curtain tape and threads matching the fabrics.

The first thing you need to do is check whether your sewing machine sews well and whether the seam is pulling the fabric.
Check it on a piece of fabric and adjust the thread tension if necessary. Why am I writing about this? Because this was my first mistake. Very offensive. Having sewn 15 meters of fabric with an accordion seam, it is very long and psychologically difficult to rip out these 15 meters. Add to this another 15 meters of hand basting... I naively believed that the seams would smooth out. Yeah, now! After I hung my satin chocolate curtains on the window, I really felt bad! All flaws are clearly visible on this fabric. My “accordion” was visible from the corridor. Horror! I had to arm myself with great patience, turn on relaxing music, flog, and sew again. Ads by

Tip two

If you have decided to start sewing curtains for the first time or do it rarely and out of necessity, like me, it is better to buy a matte and denser fabric, since the defects of the work are not so visible on it. A mandatory step in preparing for sewing is measuring the height of our future product. The fabric is now sold in widths from 2.7 meters to 3. My desired height for the product turned out to be 2.5 meters. I had to cut the curtain fabric.

Tip three

In order to evenly cut thick fabric, you need to cut the edge, take one of the threads and gradually pull it out of the fabric.
You will see a light strip along which you cut the fabric. The cut is perfectly straight. The veil is simply cut and torn like gauze. Before you start basting the edges (basting is required, without it everything will go wrong), the material must be smoothed along the edges, since the edge of a veil begins to curl when the fabric tears. An iron is simply an irreplaceable assistant when sewing curtains. It is advisable that it comes with steam. With this iron there is no risk of burning thin fabric and with the help of steam everything is smoothed out perfectly.

Then you can start basting the side seams. I did without an iron here. Folds the fabric in a double hem, approximately 1 cm wide. Sew using a sewing machine (when sewing, we stretch the fabric a little, then there will be less “struggle” on the seam. Any seam tightens the fabric a little, even if the machine is well adjusted). Then we remove the basting.

This is how the seam turned out. Be sure to smooth it out.

The veil has this edge.

Therefore, we must cut it both above and below. At the bottom of the product, the width of the hem will be wider, about 2-4 cm. As you like. I have two centimeters. And on top - 1 cm. The technology is the same. Only when basting the bottom seam, I recommend ironing the hem first (since it is wider). It makes it easier to sweep away.

First they smoothed it out once.

Then we turned it over again and pressed it again. Iron is our everything!

Tip four

Don’t be lazy to smooth out future seams and smooth out finished ones.
It doesn’t take much time, but you will avoid many problems later. Sweep it away. We stitch it. We remove the basting. Ironing.

The next step is to sew on the curtain tape.

I purchased a wide curtain ribbon that forms bow pleats.

Before you start sewing the curtain tape, you need to measure the required height of our curtains and mark it, for example, with a pencil. I did not cut off the excess fabric, but simply folded it. On top I ended up with this kind of improvised shuttlecock. In order to evenly fold the excess fabric, you need to use a measuring tape, or, like me, a small tape measure.

We measure the hem to the required length and iron it along the entire length of the veil. Now you can baste the curtain tape.

We baste on both sides, top and bottom.

Tip five

Before sewing the curtain tape on the sewing machine, hang the basted veil on the curtain and see if the length suits you.
To be honest, I had to reduce the height of the curtains again, I was deceived by a few centimeters. Moreover, in order to try it on the window, I basted only about a meter of curtain tape to the veil on both sides. This is enough to understand whether we have folded our curtains correctly. Trying on the window. Then we attach the curtain tape (also at the top and bottom) using a sewing machine.

The next stage is to iron our veil well along its entire length. Now we can tighten the curtain tape, and therefore our veil, to the desired width.

We tighten and immediately put on the hooks.

We hang the veil on the curtain.

In my opinion it turned out not bad! A solid four.

Let me sum it up

It took me 1.5 days to sew the veil.
The cost of the product is about 1 thousand rubles (170 rubles per meter of fabric × 5 meters in length, plus curtain tape, plus a spool of thread). In the store I saw a ready-made veil for 2200 rubles. The chocolate-colored curtains cost me about the same; I took the remaining fabric at a 50% discount.
