Bed linen with a claim to luxury: how to choose between satin and jacquard?

Nowadays, bed linen, in addition to its immediate function, for example, to cover the mattress, carries an aesthetic load. High-quality products surround and envelop a person going to bed. It is always pleasant to relax on beautiful and hygroscopic linen. And luxurious bed linen made using the satin-jacquard technique can serve as a wonderful gift.

Fabric Features

A long time ago, a fabric called satin appeared. It was popular because it looked like expensive satin, but was much cheaper. Cotton and silk threads were used for its production, while only silk was used to make satin. The weave of the threads was exactly the same, but in satin the cheap cotton was hidden on the reverse side. The fabric was most often used to make lining materials.

Jacquard weaving was invented by a weaver from France at the beginning of the 19th century. Beautiful convex patterns appeared on the fabric. They could be floral, geometric and fantasy. The designs were created through a complex interweaving of threads. The fabric was dense and wear-resistant. Natural threads were used: cotton, linen, wool and silk. The thicker the thread used in jacquard weave, the stronger it is, and the more convex the pattern is. Jacquard fabrics immediately found wide application in the manufacture of table and bed linen, upholstery, and ties.

Modern weavers were able to combine both of these weaves and get a linen fabric called satin jacquard. Satin gives a pleasant shine and smoothness, and jacquard gives an amazingly beautiful convex pattern obtained through the interweaving of yarn.

Composition, properties, density of the material

The word “Satin” translated from French means satin. However, the material received this name only for one feature - reflection of sunlight. The fabric itself is presented as a large cotton canvas, but due to its high density it can easily reflect light, which is reminiscent of silk material.

The material is created on a separate loom. The density is up to 225 threads per 1 sq. cm, the composition may include cotton, polyester, and synthetic fabrics. On the machine they are closely intertwined with each other, creating an original convex pattern.

Lilac satin

Important! The main feature is relief, beautiful heterogeneous patterns.

In order for the pattern to be clearly visible, it must be painted. Manufacturers have invented two types of dyeing for satin products. The first method is that the threads that will go into the weave of the material are dyed before the creation of the fabric begins. The color turns out deep and rich, since each thread has had time to absorb the paint. The second method is to create a pure white or gray pattern and then soak the fabric in different solutions and dyes. Due to this, the expressiveness of the print is achieved, and the color becomes brighter.

Durable fabric is often used for upholstery. He is not afraid of either time or circumstances. It is highly wear-resistant, so even after 5-7 years it will not become dirty or wear out.

Properties of jacquard fabric

Other material properties:

  • absorbs moisture well;
  • allows air to pass through;
  • keeps warm;
  • does not electrify when interacting with animal hair or hair;
  • the density reaches 225 threads per square centimeter - this satin is used for clothing or bed linen;
  • a thread count higher than 250 is highly wear-resistant when interacting with chemicals (hard salts, powders, bleaches); it is used to create home textiles: curtains, decorative pillowcases, sheets).

Fabric structure

Satin jacquard has a complex composition. When weaving bed linen, threads of both cotton (traditionally), and viscose or polyester are used, as well as mixed ones, that is, both of these components are included in the composition of the yarn itself. Polyester is a synthetic product, but it has elasticity, strength, and wear resistance.

Fabrics that contain it are easier to wash and dry, shrinkage becomes less, as does the deformation of any product, which means that the sheet and duvet cover will never warp. These are the properties that satin jacquard fabric has due to its composition. Such products are washed at a temperature of 30 °C, and the powder should preferably be neutral.

Advantages and disadvantages

Let's list the advantages:

  • The fabric is smooth, shiny and quite durable, its external characteristics resemble silk;
  • The relief pattern retains its original beauty for a long time;
  • Even after 40-60 years of use, the products retain their visual qualities at a fairly high level;
  • Satin jacquard is easy to care for and does not require frequent washing;
  • The fabric looks expensive and very stylish, regardless of modern fashion trends;
  • An allergic reaction does not appear on the skin after interacting with such material.

The best satin jacquard bedding warms the body in winter and cools in the summer heat. The only disadvantage of this fabric is its high cost. Not every housewife can afford such luxury.

When synthetic fibers are added to the weave, the strength of satin jacquard fabric increases significantly.

Aesthetic properties

It must be said right away that the fabric is very beautiful both in itself and when used as bed linen. There is something royal about her. There are no words, satin jacquard is luxurious - the photo perfectly demonstrates its elegant and festive look.

Such linen will be a wonderful wedding gift for newlyweds: they need to acquire useful household items, so a set of linen made from satin-jacquard fabric will be quite appropriate. White linen looks very elegant from this material, as well as all chocolate and deep burgundy shades. But, as a rule, since this underwear is classified as premium, it is most often produced in pastel shades - beige, golden, soft green, light blue and pink.

The pattern can be woven from the same color as the entire set, but it can also be contrasting. In addition, the upper part of the set is designed in one color, and the inner part in another. It may be of a more saturated tone compared to the top one. If embroidery is added to the linen, it will incredibly decorate the bedroom. It is also possible that the outer part is made of satin jacquard, and the part adjacent to the body is made of smoother satin. This is also a very good option. We have characterized the consumer properties of satin-jacquard fabric (bed linen). Customer reviews will be given below.

Equipment

Bed linen is traditionally produced for one and a half and double beds:

  • One and a half set - sheet and duvet cover measuring 215 by 145 cm.
  • Double - sheet 215 x 195 cm and duvet cover - 215 x 175 cm.
  • The family set includes two duvet covers (215x145 cm) and a sheet (220x240 cm). It is very convenient for a married couple, in which everyone prefers not to pull the blanket over themselves, but to sit comfortably under their own.
  • The Euro set is suitable for large size beds. The linen will also be appropriate (sheet – 220x240 cm and duvet cover – 220x200 cm).

Jacquard satin

Jacquard fabrics also include satin jacquard. In the production of this type of material, weaving with unequal pitch is also used. This complex weaving makes the fabric very strong and durable.

Satin jacquard is easy to distinguish by touch. The texture of the pattern on one side is repeated on the reverse side in a mirror image. The surface of this canvas is smooth and shiny. The shimmer of color and dense texture make this jacquard elegant and sophisticated. All products made from it look impressive and stylish.

Satin jacquard has another invaluable quality - this fabric does not wrinkle at all, so all products made from it will retain their original appearance for a long time.

Most often this material is used for sewing curtains. At the same time, they use a new technology - blackout. This means that the curtain fabric does not allow light and sunlight to pass through. Blackout curtains have good heat and sound insulation properties. Such canvases are widely used for decorating living rooms, hotels, offices, conference rooms, and cinemas.

Blackout fabrics can be light and thin. This allows them to be used in the manufacture of various textile products.

Jacquard satin was originally made from natural silk threads, due to which the shine of the fabric was achieved. Now, with the use of various technologies in the production of fabrics, they began to produce it from artificial fibers. Polyester and polypropylene are the most common materials for making artificial satin . These fabrics are very light, but strong and wear-resistant. They practically do not wrinkle, retain their appearance well, are not exposed to sunlight and heat, and do not require special care. These qualities of the fabric make it an ideal material for the production of mattresses.

Manufacturers

Basically, a huge amount of underwear is produced in China and Turkey. They have studied our market and produce fashionable and practical products taking into account the tastes of the Russian consumer.

China attracts, first of all, a relatively low price with an exceptionally catchy appearance and stable quality. The cost also consists of the use of artificial materials and cheap labor.

China and Italian firms have organized joint production, where the quality and price of luxury products are twice as high.

Turkish linen is of higher quality, but its price is much higher. However, it is more popular in our country than Chinese.

Portugal produces expensive luxury bed linen.

The cost of luxury linen, which is produced directly in Italy, is even higher.

In our country, Ivanovo traditionally does this. Prices and quality are quite acceptable for the average buyer.

Features of care

At first glance, this is a strong and durable fabric. This is true if you adhere to gentle and delicate care. For those who don’t want to bother with this, the material can be taken to a dry cleaner, where they will do everything necessary to update the color, structure and density of the fabric. But if you don’t want to spend extra money, home care is an equally effective method. There are several rules that should be followed.

Rules for caring for satin

  1. When washing, use only cold water. It allows you to maintain the elasticity and density of the fabric. Warm water destroys fiber bonds, which leads to loss of quality of the fabric.

Important! With a thread count of 200 to 250, you can use water up to 40 degrees when washing. This will be indicated on the manufacturer's label.

  1. Bleach and bleach are enemies. Highly concentrated chemicals can wash away the paint, thereby dulling the color or turning the canvas completely white. An excellent option for washing are shower gels or gentle liquid soap, without phosphates.
  2. Do not use brushes or sponges with a hard base or bristles. This will destroy the fiber structure and the fabric will not be lint-free and smooth. If it is necessary to remove a stain, this should be done with smooth, slow movements, using a soft sponge previously soaked in a mild detergent.

Floral motifs in jacquard design

  1. Washed items must be wrung out exclusively by hand. It is worth doing this smoothly and carefully.
  2. To dry the canvas, it must be hung in the fresh air, preferably in partial shade. This will protect the thread from fading and loss of color.
  3. Iron on reverse side only.

Important! To avoid wrinkling of threads and loss of elasticity of the fabric, before drying the fabric on the street or balcony, it must be laid out on a flat surface and left for several hours. The threads will dry out and retain their original shape. Then you can hang it up.

Satin jacquard (bed linen): reviews

Judging by what consumers write on the Internet, many people use the purchased underwear for about five years. This is, of course, the long service life of satin jacquard fabric. Reviews from customers describe the products of Ivanovo factories quite well. Many people are going to continue to purchase underwear only from this manufacturer.

Not everyone likes two-layer underwear, when the top is made of jacquard and the back is satin. Some consumers recommend looking for pure cotton when purchasing.

There are housewives who are dissatisfied with linen of saturated colors, complaining that it is subject to shedding and, as a result, loss of color.

But in general, the reviews are positive: they praise the durability of the fabric, ease of washing and ironing (you don’t have to iron it at all). They talk about the advantages like this: high-quality, luxurious, comfortable.

Distinctive features

Density and air permeability are considered the main distinguishing features of this type of fabric. When people choose products, it is not immediately possible to determine the front and back sides of the material. In terms of visual characteristics, satin-jacquard weaving is similar to a medieval tapestry. The fabric wonderfully decorates the interior of the room, but requires careful care.

Main features of the material:

  • Despite the fact that the fibers are natural, the fabric still wrinkles;
  • A double-sided web can be formed thanks to the technological features of the material;
  • Satin jacquard bed linen will not slide under the weight of the body, and puffs or pilling will not form on the sheets;
  • Even under constant exposure to direct sunlight, the color can be maintained.

The density of the fabric is high enough if through the gaps between the fibers it is not possible to distinguish the outlines of surrounding objects.
