Soft and elastic bamboo pillows: detailed analysis

Pillows filled with bamboo fiber appeared relatively recently, but managed to gain popularity due to their many positive qualities.

Bamboo fiber is made from plant materials and is therefore of natural origin. Bamboo grows quickly, up to 1 m per day, so it gains marketable qualities within a short period of time. The plant does not need fertilizers or additional chemical treatment, which is why it has its main quality – environmental friendliness.

The natural origin of the filler is not a myth

The tropical plant bamboo is used in various fields of human activity. Relatively recently, exotic cereals began to be used for the production of bedding. As a filler, bamboo is considered an artificial cellulose fiber, although it is made from natural raw materials.

How is fiber obtained?

The bamboo stems and leaves are crushed and converted into threads. Two methods are used in the technological process:

Mechanical . Young bamboo shoots are softened with enzymes, resulting in the original fiber - a safe material that does not cause allergic reactions. It takes longer to make fiber. The resulting material is called bamboo flax. Sleeping accessories made from it are much more expensive.

Chemical .
The raw materials are softened with sodium hydroxide, resulting in an adhesive material. Caustic soda is washed out of the fiber, but it will no longer be such an environmentally friendly fiber. The material is called bamboo pulp. Products made from it are inexpensive. Externally, it is impossible to distinguish the method of obtaining bamboo threads. During processing, plant stems do not lose their natural properties, and also acquire valuable qualities. Bamboo fiber is very soft and does not hold its shape well. To give it strength, another filler is added. If the label states “100% bamboo”, then this indicator refers to the fabric of the cover.

Synthetic materials, for example, swan down, holofiber, have similar properties to bamboo fiber. They help maintain the shape of the product. Therefore, you should not refuse to purchase a pillow if the label indicates that the filler contains 50% bamboo fiber.

Note! Bamboo grows well without the use of chemical fertilizers because it contains an antibacterial bioagent.

Case material

For sewing pillows, use microfiber, cotton or bamboo fiber. It is advisable to choose the latter option, otherwise, opt for cotton. A removable cover is much more practical, since you can wash it without filling.

Features of obtaining bamboo fiber

Beautiful and cozy pillows with the image of a funny panda or bright green leaves are made from real bamboo raw materials. In this case, the plant itself should be no more than four years old.

Using mechanical processing, the stems are ground into fine fibers, which are then purified using chemical elements. At the same time, the mass of the fiber itself increases slightly, which makes it possible to reduce the price of a soft and cozy material.

The last stage allows you to clean the fibers from dirt and remaining chemicals. So the resulting material is absolutely safe and environmentally friendly.

Customer reviews: advantages and disadvantages

  • Air permeability . The filler, like the bamboo cover (if this is the type used), has a porous structure and maintains an optimal microclimate.
  • Hypoallergenic . Contains natural antibiotics that repel household ticks.
  • Antibacterial properties . Natural antibiotics prevent the appearance of microbes and putrefactive formations.
  • Hygroscopicity . Moisture is perfectly absorbed and evaporates.
  • Environmental friendliness . No fertilizers or pesticides are used when growing bamboo.
  • Hygiene . The filler does not absorb various odors and prevents the formation of dust.
  • Comfort . The products are very soft, but are elastic, therefore improving the quality of sleep.
  • Easy care . Quick, including machine wash and dry.
  • Durability . Properties are maintained after a large number of washes. Relatively long service life - 5-7 years.
  • Affordable price . Most models have a low cost of +- 1,000 rubles.
  • Excessive softness. Structural fibers gradually cake and displace air, reducing comfort during rest.
  • In an excessively humid climate, hygroscopicity turns into a serious disadvantage: sleeping on a damp pillow is not very pleasant. However, such a climate is rare for the territory of the Russian Federation.
  • Painful sensations . Pillows are not suitable for people with diseases of the cervical spine: protrusions, intervertebral hernias, osteochondrosis.

Filler characteristics

The filling in bamboo pillows is viscose. To create it, plant stems are taken. They are treated with chemicals. This does not mean that the remaining toxic particles will subsequently remain in the finished product. They are neutralized in production.

Stages of production of pillows filled with bamboo fiber:

  1. Selection of bamboo from 4 years of age.
  2. Grinding it into sawdust and shavings.
  3. Adding a concentrated solution of caustic soda or potassium to bamboo.
  4. The cellulose will soften and transform into a sticky mass. It will be pressed through plates with very small holes made of metal.
  5. The extruded raw material is placed in an acidic environment. This is how the fibers are restored and become strong. The alkali is completely neutralized.
  6. The threads are washed to remove salts and dried.

The result is a fleecy fiber with micropores. It has increased flexibility and cannot be broken.

For the sake of the volume of the finished bamboo pillow, the resulting fibers are mixed with synthetic materials.

Who are bamboo pillows suitable for?

A bamboo pillow is considered medium in terms of support. It is very soft and flexible, ideal for children, even newborns. Bamboo pillows are divided into types of construction and certain properties:

Anatomical . These include standard models of different sizes and heights. They are not recommended for people experiencing painful back or neck symptoms. For example, those who have manifestations of osteochondrosis.

Orthopedic . These are more expensive products that have a therapeutic effect. The models are suitable for those who suffer from spinal diseases and those who sleep on their sides. Regular sleep on such a pillow will help avoid the development of osteochondrosis.

Transformers . Products change their original shape. They can be used as a cushion for the neck; such models are especially convenient and indispensable during frequent trips.

The standard bamboo pillow is suitable for those who prefer to sleep on their back. An important quality of products with such a filler is hypoallergenicity. Dust mites and other harmful microorganisms do not settle, and there is no threat to asthmatics.

Features of choice

When choosing, in addition to the filler and size, it is necessary to take into account the degree of rigidity and height. To do this, be guided by individual characteristics, namely:

  • age,
  • gender,
  • shoulder width (If the shoulder length is up to 15 cm, then the height should be 10 cm, if from 15 to 20 cm, then the height of the product is 12 cm, if more than 20 cm, then 14 cm).

Your favorite sleeping position is also important:

  • height 8-10 cm is suitable for sleeping on your back,
  • 10-13 cm – on the side,
  • 6-8 cm for sleeping on your stomach.

How to choose a bamboo pillow

Unfortunately, there are a lot of unscrupulous manufacturers and sellers around. There is a risk of buying a fake or simply a low-quality product. Such a purchase is especially dangerous if it was intended for a child.

To choose the right bamboo pillow, you should follow certain recommendations:

  1. First of all, you need to do a simple test - take a deep breath through the pillow. If air does not flow, it means there is not bamboo inside, but something synthetic of low quality.
  2. The smell plays an important role, and it doesn’t matter whether it comes from the filler or the cover. The sleeping pillow should not emit any scents.
  3. All seams should be well stitched, it is better if they are double. The label should contain information about the composition of the product, its manufacturer and care recommendations.

Sometimes stores offer double-chamber pillows; they consist of two types of fibers, separated by a bamboo partition inside. For example, on one side there is swan's down, and on the other - bamboo fiber. There are few reviews yet and they are all mixed, so it is difficult to judge how good they are.

A bamboo pillow is often chosen for children and people prone to allergic reactions. Such products often contain other synthetic fibers, and attention should also be paid to the material from which the cover is made.

Traditionally, the pillow filling was sewn in teak. This was true when the filling was swan's down and goose feather. Through the dense structure of the cotton fabric, the sharp parts of the feathers could not penetrate and were securely sealed inside.

Now a pillow cover can be made of anything, depending on the nature of the filling, but it is better if it is made of natural fabrics (cotton, bamboo, etc.).

Important!

Bamboo fibers do not tolerate high temperatures; under their influence, they become rigid and lose their shape. If the filler becomes crumpled due to heat, nothing can be done about it. To avoid permanent deformation, bamboo products should be dried away from heat sources and washed only at low temperatures.

Choosing the right pillow size is not difficult; the distance from the neck to the base of the shoulder (12-15 cm) is equal to the height of the pillow, which will provide proper support for the head and cervical spine. The length and width of the product can be chosen as desired; it is advisable to take into account the dimensions of the sleeping place.

For children under 3 years old, it is recommended to choose a pillow with a height of 2-3 cm.

Care

The most common requirements on bamboo pillow labels.

Are bamboo pillows allowed to be washed?

Be sure to read the information on the tag. It contains all the information about possible care and washing method: hand or machine. Manufacturers recommend washing the pillow 2-3 times a year. Bamboo fiber gradually becomes dirty during use, and therefore the products require regular maintenance.

If machine washing is allowed, it is better to use a delicate cycle. It is better to wash large stains by hand. Use the following tips:

  1. Before washing, be sure to check the product: perhaps a seam has come apart somewhere or damage has appeared on the cover. Sew up any holes, otherwise fibers will get into the water.
  2. Use delicate gel products; powder granules penetrate the porous structure of the fiber and clog it.
  3. The water temperature should be between 30 and 35°C.
  4. Rinse the product thoroughly; all chemicals must be removed. Use conditioner to soften the fiber.
  5. Dry the pillow on a horizontal surface, avoiding direct sunlight.

If the pillow has lost its shape

It is advisable to shake the product gently before use. If deformation of the product does occur, beat the pillow thoroughly for 5-10 minutes. The fiber will become fluffier and softer. But it is difficult to completely restore the original appearance of the product due to the characteristics of the bamboo material.

During storage, pillows should not be bent, pressed or compressed. Air out your sleep accessories more often.

How to care

Bamboo pillows are easy to care for. They can be washed either by hand or in a machine - the product will not lose its shape. In this case, you should follow some rules:

  1. Wash on delicate cycle with water temperature no higher than 40 degrees.
  2. Check the seams to ensure they are free of defects.
  3. Do not use bleach or washing powder. It is better to use a liquid product.
  4. To rinse the pillow well, you need to take a little detergent and turn on an additional rinse cycle.
  5. Squeezing is not recommended.
  6. Bamboo products should only be dried in a horizontal position, away from sunlight. After complete drying, fluff the pillow.

In the end I want to give some advice:

  1. Models with a higher bamboo fiber content are significantly lighter.
  2. Carefully examine the material of the cover; the seams should be continuous and even.
  3. Bring the pillow close to your face and inhale deeply. If you breathe easily, then the filler is of high quality, since bamboo fiber allows air to pass through perfectly.
  4. Pay attention to the quality of the cover; it is unlikely that natural fiber will be placed in a synthetic bedspread.

Bamboo fiber

Availability of a removable cover

The presence or absence of a removable cover on a pillow is an essential criterion for choosing a pillow.
The removable cover is not just an additional pillowcase. The inside is quilted with a layer of bamboo fiber, that is, it has a small volume of its own. The advantage of a removable cover is that it can be washed separately from the pillow.

A bamboo pillow without a removable cover can only be washed as a whole. Often such a pillow has a zipper, through which you can adjust the amount of filler, adding or removing it at your discretion.
