History and description
What is degrade fabric? At first glance, it looks like this material has faded in the sun or faded during washing. Actually, this is how it used to be - the technique of degradation on fabric appeared in the 70s, during the hippie era. Original items were then created at home - knitted clothes were tightly twisted or tied and dipped in dye. However, today the dyeing technique has been brought to perfection, and things made from this material seem to acquire additional lightness and airiness.
Dresses made from degrade fabric were presented by the most popular fashion houses such as Prada and Givenchy.
Fabric with a degraded effect can be of completely different colors, even, at first glance, incompatible. The main condition is the transition from a light shade to a dark one or from dark to light.
The price per meter depends on what kind of canvas the dyeing technique was used on and starts from 800 rubles.
You can see what material with a similar color effect looks like in the photo.
History of technology
Degrade is a gradual lightening of color.
The French word degrade means lightening a color, changing its saturation and quality characteristics. The main feature of the technique is a soft, smooth change of shades. Coloring is reminiscent of the wet-on-wet watercolor technique, where it is impossible to determine where one color ends and another begins.
Visually, degraded fabrics resemble sun-bleached fabric or an unsuccessfully washed faded item. In the 70s of the last century, material was considered a fashionable attribute among rebels, misfits, punks and everyone who liked to shock the public. Dark-light T-shirts and dresses looked almost as provocative as deliberately torn and boiled jeans.
They created fashionable things at home. Tightly tied and twisted knitted items were boiled in a large saucepan or metal basin with dyes. The dye did not penetrate into the jammed areas, and interesting, smooth color transitions were obtained. Colorful and rainbow T-shirts were very popular among hippies.
Degrade on the fashion show catwalk
Nowadays, the degrade technique is popular, fabrics are dyed in factories, and various wardrobe items are produced - from scarves to evening dresses.
Soft combinations and flowing shades are used in their collections by popular designers, fashion designers and brands - Prada, Blumarin, Givenchy.
Kinds
Let's first figure out what fabric can be used for a dress with a degraded effect:
- Atlas. Both from natural silk and linen with the addition of cotton and synthetics.
- Knitwear. This fabric is durable and wear-resistant, and dyes well. In addition, its price is not high.
- Chiffon. Items made from degrade chiffon look especially airy, since the material itself is light and translucent.
- Cotton. Just like knitwear, wear-resistant and dyes beautifully
- Silk. Quite an expensive option, but it should be noted that degradation on silk looks especially impressive.
Not only the materials differ, but also the methods of painting them:
- The main method is to use one color, when the canvas, which is absolutely snow-white on top, acquires a rich, deep shade towards the bottom.
- Printed design. In this case, the shade of the pattern applied to a plain canvas changes from dark to light.
- Layering. The desired effect here is achieved by layering many layers of transparent material, which, in turn, is painted in shades of different saturation.
- Use of decorative materials. The method does not apply to coloring. The transition from light to dark or vice versa is achieved here by decorating the item with rhinestones, sequins, and other decorative elements of different shades.
Body shaping with clothes with an ombre effect
This unusual option for dyeing fabric not only adds originality to the image, but also serves as an excellent means of visually correcting your figure and height. So, short girls who want to look more stately can be advised to wear a top, shirt, blouse or tunic with a fade effect from light to dark, and use trousers or a skirt in a shade close to the darkest as the bottom for the look.
It is better not to use a floor-length dress, because with ombre it will look more massive and bulky in the lower part. Only tall young ladies can afford such clothes.

If you are the owner of a “rectangle” type, then the degrade effect will allow you to create a visually more advantageous silhouette. To do this, just take a dress or sundress with the color darkening towards the waist and then transitioning back to a light shade towards the hips, look at the photo. And with the right style of dress, the effect will increase significantly!

For girls with a pear figure, it is useful to pay attention to dresses, tunics, and sweater dresses, in which the ombre effect manifests itself in the form of a transition from a light top (in the chest and shoulders area) to a dark bottom (at the hips). This model will allow you to visually balance the proportions due to color; the hips will appear less wide and massive.

Owners of the “apple” type, on the contrary, need to purchase blouses, shirts and dresses with darkening at the shoulders and gradual lightening towards the hips. The skirt or trousers for such a set should also be light. And if you need a jacket or jacket, then select them from a dark range. An excellent example of such a bow is shown in the photo below.

How to make degradation at home?
To achieve the best effect when dyeing your hair, you must carefully follow the instructions included with the dye. Most paint packages contain a special bottle with an applicator; mix the paint in it as written in the instructions. If you don’t have such an applicator, you can use any plastic container; by the way, salon professionals mix paint in just such containers.
Comb your hair and divide it into equal sections. After this, secure them with clips just above the crown. Start coloring from the lower strands, but not along the entire length, but only to the middle. Carefully paint the ends of your hair or their roots, depending on what kind of tinting you have chosen. To create a luxurious shimmer, apply several tones of the same paint. In this case, do not overdo it with color and tone, so as not to look stupid with a ruined hairstyle.
Hand cream will help your hair too
Gently apply the dye to your hair and wait the time indicated in the instructions. Most often it takes 20-40 minutes, depending on the color of the dye and the type of your hair. If you do not adhere to the specified time, you risk getting a completely different color and shade of your hair. After the time allotted for dyeing, rinse the dye thoroughly with warm water, then apply a mask or hair conditioner (may be included with the dye), rinse your hair thoroughly again, then dry it. Since hair is already damaged when dyeing, it is better to dry it in the air, without a hairdryer.
So, the gradient effect is already on your hair! If you did everything correctly, it will last a long time on your hair. Frequently dyeing your hair has a negative impact on its appearance, but you can always monitor the regrown roots and tint them or the ends of your hair. If you want something new or return to your previous hair color, hide the degradation under a solid dye, and it is advisable to use a less saturated dye than your hair color.
Care
Here are the basic rules for fabric dyed this way:
- Carefully sort items before washing. Do not wash with darker items
- You need to wash either by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle.
- If there is heavy soiling, first soak the product in soapy water.
- Washing temperature – no more than 30 degrees
- Since different materials can be dyed this way, carefully read the care instructions on the product label.

The third method of coloring. Soak in dye.
T-shirt with degraded transition. Author: Dasha Che.
You will need: - large container for preparing the solution; - fabric paint; hot water; - salt and vinegar. |
Fabric paints can be purchased at any hobby store. Choose aniline dye or any other foreign dye. Before you start dyeing, try the dye on a piece of fabric and make sure that the color suits you.
The paint should be accompanied by instructions for preparing the solution. Often, some of the contents of the tube need to be diluted in hot water with a small amount of salt.
1. Prepare the solution in a large container
and prepare a straight stick or ruler for ease of painting.
2. Thread the T-shirt onto the ruler and lower it into the container up to the armpits.
Hold for a couple of seconds, then lift.
3. Then immerse again, but a few centimeters lower and hold a little longer.
Slowly lift the shirt higher and higher, and hold it longer.
4. Finally, leave the bottom of the shirt in the solution for 5-10 minutes.
5. Make sure the colors transition smoothly from dark to light. If you get a clear stripe, lower the T-shirt into the paint just above the level of the stripe and move it around in the solution so that the colors merge.
6. After achieving the desired effect, rinse the T-shirt in cold water with vinegar added. Rinse until the water runs clear. Hang the shirt to dry.
7. You can wash the dyed item by hand or in a washing machine. Good paint will not wash out over time.
8. You can dye denim items in the same way using bleach. Usually it is diluted with water (2:1 - water, bleach) and soaked for 20-30 minutes, in the same way changing the exposure time and immersion level for a smooth transition.
Happy experimenting!
