What to wear with a white skirt, current models this season

Who is this style suitable for?

Ideal for inverted triangle shapes. By balancing broad shoulders, the trapezoid makes the figure more proportional.

This silhouette is also suitable for women with a triangle figure. Moreover, in this case, it would be preferable to choose a medium length, which will hide wide hips and visually lengthen the legs.

For ladies with an apple body type, when choosing an A-line silhouette, it is preferable to stay at mid-calf length to balance the shape.

For thin young ladies there are practically no restrictions on the choice of length. But they should avoid vertical patterns that lengthen an already thin figure.

Suitable material

There are a large number of materials for A-line skirts.

Designers often rely on the season for which it is created. In the warm season, it is common to use natural, breathable fabrics that will help keep you cool and will not cause discomfort. A-line skirt products for autumn and winter are made from denser materials designed to retain heat and protect a woman from the piercing cold and wind.

Denim

The denim A-line skirt is extremely popular among young girls.

They like this affordable material, which can be of different densities depending on what time of year it is outside.

This product was at the height of fashion in the 90s, when it could be seen almost everywhere.

Denim can be of different colors and shades; even a combination of several colors in one product is allowed.

For a casual look, a denim skirt is just perfect. Urban style of clothing involves combining such a bottom with low-top shoes. Mostly these are sneakers, ballet shoes, and sandals. It is better to choose shoes in light colors.

Leather

The leather A-line skirt is one of the most popular today.

This material is in great demand among fashionistas, and designers love it very much. Soft leather adds sophistication to the look.

This product emphasizes the feminine line of the hips, but at the same time well masks any imperfections that may exist. At the same time, the skin keeps its shape perfectly.

For leather products, midi and mini lengths are considered optimal.

A classic black skirt will be a great addition to an evening or everyday look.

Some people are afraid to choose such a thing because they don’t know what to wear with a leather a-line skirt. In fact, she can easily put together a stylish set with a laconic, simple white blouse and top.

Wool

Wool A-line skirts are perfect for cold winter and autumn.

The material retains heat well, and the thing itself looks feminine and attractive. It can be part of a business or casual look.

The woolen model does not lose its shape, the skirt looks simple but elegant, which is what many fashionistas like.

Among the proposed fabrics, an a-line skirt can look stylish in each of the options. Fashionistas choose the one that suits their style and season.

Popular models of A-line skirts

With smell

Suitable not only for slim, but also for overweight women. This skirt can be made both in a business style and for everyday wear.

Pleated

A feminine and romantic version of the trapezoid. By varying the type of folds, you can correct figure flaws. A medium-length skirt with pleats is a classic version of a business suit in Moscow and other European cities.

With elastic band

A wonderful summer option for a skirt. Most often it is sewn from thin, breathable fabrics. The elasticated skirt is very comfortable and fits almost any body type. In addition, sewing it with your own hands is very simple.

With buttons

The placement of the buttons determines the style of the skirt. From strict school uniform style to loose.

Sewing materials

The choice of material for sewing depends on the season of the year and the purpose of the product. For summer options, silk, denim, cotton, and viscose are used. For winter cold, thicker and more durable fabric is required: suiting, tweed, knitwear. Each material has its own characteristics:

  1. Denim. It is highly durable, has good air permeability, is cheap, and is resistant to creasing. This material is undemanding in terms of care. But if the fabric has a bright shade, then it may fade when washed. This material is used for both summer and winter models. In this case, the silhouette of the figure may be different. Most often suitable for everyday style.
  2. Cotton. If it is thin, then it is used for summer products. The material is pleasant to the body and allows air to pass through well. May lose shape after washing, wrinkle quickly and is not resistant to wear.
  3. Linen. This fabric is natural, does not cause allergies and is optimal for summer skirts. If you choose a material with lining, then linen is suitable for demi-season and winter use. A skirt made of it wrinkles quickly.
  4. Velvet. It has a beautiful appearance, the material is pleasant to the touch, soft, and breathable. The fabric drapes well and can be used for sewing festive patterns, but complex cutting should be avoided here. The material should also be treated with an antistatic agent.
  5. Suit fabric. It is well suited for demi-season and winter models. The product holds its shape perfectly and does not wrinkle. Thanks to the presence of synthetic fibers, the material is easy to care for.
  6. Leather. It is often used for sewing office clothing, as well as products of any other style. These skirts are suitable for slender women. Moreover, they can be combined with a voluminous top. Instead of natural material, you can use eco-leather; it costs less, but is almost as good in quality.
  7. Jacquard. It is used for making holiday products, as it has a special, elegant appearance.

Skirts of this silhouette can also be sewn from corduroy, satin, silk, viscose, and suede. The first option is used for warm models, and the rest - for summer ones. The fabric for short A-line skirts must keep its shape, so flowing fabrics are best used for long items.

Length selection

First, let's define the terminology. To do this, carefully study the diagram below.

For A-line skirts, the most common are mini, midi and maxi options.

A mini skirt that reveals your legs requires a slim physique.

Midi length suits most female body types. The A-silhouette, which makes curvy hips appear slimmer, allows you to visually elongate your figure.

Maxi length suits almost all women. For example, an evening long dress with an A-silhouette skirt will always be very feminine and elegant. The pattern of a dress with this version of the skirt should have a laconic bodice, not overloaded with bulky details. Also, long skirts made of light, airy fabrics are an ideal choice for a summer walk.

Let's take a closer look at how the most common types of A-line skirts are made.

What to combine with

The right decision when creating an image is always based on courage and risks. Fashion has no fear of experimentation. Any doubts can be dispelled by seeking help from a review of ready-made options. The same rules apply to what to wear with an A-line skirt. The model is universal and can harmonize with various styles, mainly:

  • casual casual;
  • timeless classic;
  • office, business;
  • airy, romantic style.

Thanks to the peculiar democratic style of the look, various variations of the top are available. The choice depends on the specific situation. Sweatshirts, shirts, T-shirts, turtlenecks, T-shirts - the choice is endless.

Useful

The only peculiarity is that it is recommended to combine a top that can be easily tucked into the waistband of the skirt, both completely and asymmetrically. An advantageous silhouette is obtained by artificially recreating the hourglass-shaped figure type. A laconic blouse made of light fabrics that does not fit the upper body is suitable for this.

A deep neckline will add a touch of sexuality. But even in this case, the jacket should be mostly loose and tucked into the waistband of the skirt.

When choosing shoes to match your outfit, you should note the constant rule: the shorter the length of the skirt, the higher the heel. And the trapezoid shape harmonizes mainly with elevated shoes. If the heel is not appropriate, for example, the bow is designed for a daily walk, preference should be given to the platform.

Of course, there are exceptions when the style of the skirt can be used in combination with flat shoes, more often the hem length is above the knee. A particularly good option is if you buy a skirt made of denim, then the best choice would be ballet flats, sneakers, sandals and other similar shoes.

For the winter season, fashion designers offer models made from warm fabrics with the addition of wool. The length is selected individually. Don't give up short skirts. Thick tights of the right color will not look ridiculous; on the contrary, they will create style in combination with a long coat. Boots with chunky soles, a knitted hat and a voluminous scarf can make the owner of an A-line skirt stand out from the crowd.

A trapezoidal bottom is also available for going to work, in combination with a white shirt and jacket, which can easily be replaced with a cardigan.

When putting together an image, you should never forget about additional accessories. They can not only complement the look, but also ruin the look. Every little thing, even makeup and hairstyle, adds features and transforms a fashionista beyond recognition.

Constructing an A-line skirt pattern

The shape of such skirts in the classic version resembles a geometric figure - a trapezoid. Emphasizing the silhouette at the waist and widening towards the bottom guarantees the almost universal use of A-silhouette models. Creating a pattern for an a-line skirt is simple and accessible to beginning seamstresses.

A straight silhouette skirt pattern is used as a base one. You can build a pattern yourself or download it for free on the Internet. Step-by-step instructions for creating a basic pattern are on our website.

We transfer both panels of the skirt onto tracing paper.

Modeling a simple A-line skirt consists of creating an extension at the bottom.

This can be done in two ways.

First way

We set aside from 3 to 7 cm along the bottom line (depending on the size of the required expansion) and build a new side line of parts. At the same time, do not forget to round off the bottom section of the skirt, lifting it along the side sections. This is done to even out the length of the skirt. We do not remove the darts at the waist during this modeling; they remain in their places.

Second way

The second method allows you to get a more beautiful fit of the product. The trapezoidal shape is created by closing the darts at the waist and widening at the bottom. We extend the central lines of the darts to the entire length of the skirt.

We make cuts along the marked lines. We close the dart at the waist, creating an expansion at the bottom. But since the width of the back and front darts is different, the lower extension will also be different. Since the back dart is wider, the back part will also be wider, which, with a standard figure, will cause the side seam to move forward.

Whether to align the flare at the bottom depends on the characteristics of the figure.

For women with curvy buttocks, a wider back panel will be the best fit. For standard figures, the front dart is closed completely, and the back dart is closed by the same amount as the front one. Thus, the dart remains on the back panel, but is smaller in width. Additionally, we expand along the side seams - see photo.

Cut variations

An A-line skirt, as a rule, does not require any decorative elements, since it is self-sufficient. The product looks feminine, elegant, but at the same time discreet, which allows it to be used for evening walks and business meetings. Modern fashionistas often prefer modified versions of skirts. The following models can be distinguished:

  1. On the yoke. It is an insert at the front of the product, on which there is a clear seam. This element allows you to achieve a more curvaceous shape of the model and puts emphasis on the waist.
  2. With folds. If they are large, then the item is used to create a business image. When sewing this option, a fabric is taken that can hold its shape well. On a romantic date, it is better to wear a skirt with a small fold or pleating. Models with drapery look original if it is located randomly throughout the entire canvas.
  3. On the belt. These skirts are standard. They are versatile and can be combined with different looks.
  4. On an elastic band. This type of product can be worn in both summer and winter. An elastic band can act as a bright decorative element or an accent. Often it is hidden in the belt. The original option is considered to be a crinkled elastic band.
  5. High waisted. If the usual fit suits almost all girls, then these models can be paid attention to women of small stature and office workers. The high waist makes the figure slimmer and more graceful.
  6. With smell. The product is a wide piece of fabric that wraps around the hips, and its edges are secured at the waist with a rivet, hook, button or laces. The height of the cut changes, and if you wrap the material more tightly, it disappears altogether. Wrap skirts are preferred by young, active girls who like bright colors. Long items will help create a romantic look.

An interesting option is a product with an asymmetrical cut. More often it is used to create holiday and evening “looks”. Now in trend are those models in which the front part of the canvas is shorter than the back.

A-line pleated skirt

A checkered skirt is sewn from rectangular pieces of fabric. Trapezoidal folds create a beautiful A-silhouette. At the same time, the model does not look bulky at the waist, and the folds do not puff up.

Let's consider constructing a pattern for such a model for OT = 84 cm. This parameter will be the main and only one determining the width and depth of each fold. Hip circumference is not taken into account in this calculation.

We take the depth of each fold to be 7 cm (along the waist line). Accordingly, the number of folds is 84:7 = 12.

To determine the depth of the fold, multiply its width by 4. We get 7x4 = 28 cm.

We put the dimensions on the pattern symmetrically in both directions, dividing the width and depth of the fold in half, i.e. 1⁄2 width (= 3.5 cm) and 1⁄2 depth (= 14 cm) in each direction.

Important Note

We place the pattern, taking into account the direction of the grain thread. The axis of symmetry of the folds should coincide with the warp thread. The flare at the bottom edge is determined depending on the length of the skirt. In our calculation, this is a midi length of 85 cm.

How folds are formed

In the next photo, the width of the fold is indicated in gray. For clarity, we will break the process into steps. In the first case, the fold is bent so that its edge coincides with the axis of symmetry. In the second step, the fold, mirroring the first, is bent so that its edge is adjacent to the edge of the first.

As a practice, it is recommended to try making such a bookmark on paper. The step by step process is shown below. It makes sense to trim the waist line after adding all the folds, and not each one separately. There is no need to trim the bottom of the skirt.

Depending on the material used, we decide on the advisability of ironing the folds. If the fabric holds its shape, then this is not necessary. We sew the skirt model in question from cambric with silk, so we iron the edges of the folds.

Since such a pleated skirt requires three panels of fabric and their total width will ultimately be 4.5 m, it is more convenient to lay the folds on each panel separately. Then we sew the fabrics together. We insert a hidden zipper into one of the seams. It is more convenient to do this by sewing the 1st and 2nd panels.

We combine the third panel with the 1st and 2nd.

We sew on the belt and process the bottom of the product. If desired, you can provide an additional fold, thus expanding the volume at the waist. In this case, we make the belt with a partial elastic band, which adds convenience to the product.

Review of fashionable models

The choice of skirt style depends on what event you plan to wear it to. It is also worth paying attention to the girl’s physique and the prevailing style of her wardrobe. The most common options:

  1. Straight. A long white straight-cut skirt is suitable only for those who have an ideal figure. Slits can be made on the sides or back, zippers or buttons can be sewn on. The short straight model is suitable for girls of medium and short height.
  2. Pencil. This summer skirt fits the hips, so it is suitable for girls with a sporty figure. The model is strict, ideal for the office or negotiations. There is often a slot at the bottom that does not hinder movement when walking.
  3. Trapezoid. Fits the waist and widens at the bottom. Fits perfectly into the image of a business woman.
  4. A-silhouette. Looks like a trapezoid. The main feature is that it is suitable for any figure. To look perfect, just choose the right fabric and length.
  5. Asymmetry. This style is a product with different edge lengths, ideal for street style.
  6. Sun. Sewn from a circle with a cutout in the center. Combinations with an elastic belt or a wide insert made of another material are especially beautiful. You can wear this skirt with blouses and tops.
  7. Half sun. If you unfold it, you will get a semicircle. For the summer, such a skirt is made from light fabrics, sometimes with ruffles and an accordion.
  8. Bell. The silhouette resembles a bell. Not suitable for those with curvy figures, as it will visually increase volume. There are miniskirt options, below the knee and almost to the ankle.
  9. Pleated. The thinner the folds, the more they visually increase the size of the hips. The model is suitable for daily wear and evening outings.
  10. Tulip. Fits the waist and area near the knees, outlining the silhouette of the hips. There are lush options with folds or simple straight ones.
  11. With smell. This is usually a white short skirt with a wrap-around skirt that fastens with buttons. The style is suitable for sporty girls. Knee length is suitable for older ladies.
  12. Godet. Such a long skirt can be worn as an evening option. It fits elegantly at the waist and hips and flares out at the knees. Decorations in the form of chains, belts and colored buttons are appropriate in the waist area.
  13. Fluffy multi-layered skirt. They are sewn from lightweight fabrics, the layers of which are superimposed on each other. It is better to combine this skirt with a light top that does not weigh down the top. These models are recommended to be worn in summer.

In addition to the style, you should pay attention to the fit of the product. A high waist is suitable for those girls who are trying to visually reduce their volume. This way you can hide your tummy and make your waist look slimmer. Short girls especially pay attention to this option. A high-waist midi skirt visually increases your height. Medium and low rise is suitable only for slender girls who want to emphasize the thinness of the waist or emphasize the hips.

How to sew an a-line skirt with your own hands

Sew one side seam. We process the seam allowance with an overlocker and iron it. Fold the bottom edge of the fabric, baste and stitch. Place a lace strip at a distance of 5 cm from the bottom.

We mark the folds on the wrong side, secure them with a basting stitch and iron them.

We sew the yokes reinforced with thermal fabric along one edge and sew them together with the main part of the skirt, matching the side seams. We sew a machine seam.

We sew a zipper into the open seam.

We sew the inner parts of the yokes along one edge and iron the allowances. Place the yokes right sides together and sew along the top edge and zipper strips. In this case, the zipper is located inside the yokes. We do machine stitching.

We turn the yoke inside out, fold in the seam allowance along the bottom edge, and hand-stitch it with a blind seam. The skirt is ready!

Current prints and colors

A variety of color palettes and current prints allow this product to look completely different in a new version.

Popular colors, of course, start with the classic range. A white skirt always looks light and attractive. This product is best worn in the summer, as it looks very airy and floating. It can be easily complemented with stylish shoes, sandals and even sneakers. There are quite a lot of options.

Black color does not lose popularity either. More often than not, skirts in this color become an addition to work looks. They are also suitable for creating stylish evening ensembles.

Red also remains popular. Today, designers suggest boldly experimenting with all its shades, without fear of seeming provocative. The right color combination in the set can easily balance it out and make it look elegant.

Rich blue, associated with nobility and sophistication, should not be ignored. Such models look very self-sufficient, so in order not to overload the set, it is better to combine them with calmer things.

Gray skirts also attract the attention of designers and women. Gray has long ceased to be considered boring and limited. Its shimmers look elegant and expensive. It’s worth putting together the right set so that the main color sparkles with new shades and adds zest.

Considering the current prints, it can be noted that the cage remains the most popular. A checkered skirt looks conservative, but at the same time does not lose its femininity and attractiveness. Black and white checkered is considered popular, but these colors can also be replaced with burgundy, green, wine, and dark blue shades.

The striped skirt is still at the peak of popularity. This print can easily be called a classic. The traditional print is vertical stripes.

Printed models look good combined with stylish knitted cardigans.

A-line skirt model with buttons and side pockets

In a detailed master class we will show you how to sew an A-line skirt with your own hands without a pattern.

To make a short skirt you need:

  • striped shirt fabric – 0.6 m;
  • chintz for burlap pockets - 0.3 m;
  • bias tape, 100% cotton, color – small check – 4 m;
  • buttons with a diameter of 13 mm – 8 pcs.;
  • threads to match the color of the fabric;
  • adhesive fabric – 0.3 m;
  • glue web -2 m;
  • sewing tool.

Master class - how to sew an a-line skirt without a pattern

Pre-moisten and iron the fabric, dry for at least 30 minutes. This will prevent possible shrinkage of the material after the first wash.

Next, we will begin to cut out the details of the product, marking them directly on the fabric.

Cut a strip 8 cm wide for the belt. From the rest of the fabric we will sew the main part of the skirt. To create an A-line silhouette along the waist line, set aside 6 cm on each side and cut off the excess fabric.

We cut the front panel in the center along the entire length - here we will make a fastener for buttons.

Next, let's work on the side pockets.

We cut out the burlap for them, using our own hand as a template. We outline the palm with a small allowance. We cut out 4 parts.

To ensure that the visible part of the pocket does not differ from the main material of the skirt, we make a valance. We cut out two elements from the main fabric about 5 cm wide and fit them onto two pieces of burlap.

Place the burlap, wrong side up, without valances on the front panel of the skirt at a distance of 9 cm from the top edge of the main part. We attach the burlap, leaving aside the amount of allowance along the side seam (= 1 cm).

We perform a similar operation with the second panel of the skirt and burlap with valance.

We turn the burlap to the side allowance and iron it.

We sew all four burlap into the edge to prevent the pockets from turning outward.

Place both panels with right sides facing each other.

We pin along the side seam and edge of the burlap. We machine stitch along the side seam and the burlap (red basting in the photo), leaving aside the required allowance.

Iron the pockets onto the front shelf.

We process the side cuts. If desired, this can be done with an overlocker or processed with bias tape.

The result is a neat pocket.

Next, let’s work on the button closure – the clasp. We strengthen the central cut with adhesive fabric. Strip width – 20 mm.

We process the cut with an overlocker; if it is not available, you can use a zigzag stitch.

We turn the hem to the wrong side by 2 cm, placing an adhesive web.

We pin it with pins to secure it and iron it.

We cut out the blank for the belt. Its length is equal to OT plus 12 cm.

We cut out a strip of equal length and 3 cm wide from adhesive fabric. We glue the belt from the inside out, and sew one long section with an overlocker or a zigzag stitch.

We lay out the skirt panel on a horizontal surface. Starting from the center of the back, we begin to symmetrically lay folds in both directions to get 1⁄2 FROM for this part of the panel. We pin the formed folds with needles or baste them.

Similarly, up to a size of 1⁄2 OT, we place folds on the front panels, after pinning the overlapping edges.

Place the belt on the top section of the skirt, matching the edges. Make sure that the center lines of the two parts match. We pin the pins for fixation.

We sew a machine stitch at a distance of 1 cm from the cut.

Smooth the seam allowance.

Fold the waistband in half and iron it. We cut off the ends at the corners - see photo.

We sew a stitch along the end corner cuts, notch the corners, cut off the excess allowance.

We turn the belt inside out, baste it or secure it with pins.

We fold the processed section of the belt and baste it. On the front side we machine stitch into the seam.

To process the bottom edge of the skirt, first prepare the binding. We make two opposite folds on it and iron them. We apply the binding to the bottom cut of the panel along the front side, aligning the longitudinal edges. In this case, you need to leave a small allowance at the end of the part, protruding beyond the panel.

We attach the binding along the edge, retreating to the width of the foot.

We turn the binding over to the wrong side and glue it using a web.

We make loops on the right side of the panel, and sew buttons on the left.

Winter models

In the cool season, a long skirt will keep you warm no worse than trousers. In addition, you can always wear warm tights and leggings, so the girl will definitely not freeze.

Woolen

Among the fabrics from which winter skirt models are made, the most popular is wool. It is very warm, practical and dense, so skirts made from it can be used to create both casual and business looks. Woolen skirts look very presentable and can be of any style.

Bologne

For the off-season, a Bolognese skirt would be an ideal option. Bolon is a durable and waterproof material that retains heat well and is suitable for walking in cold rainy weather. This season, straight quilted skirts are popular in shades such as emerald, purple, olive, khaki, beige, and chocolate.

Tweed

Warm, textured tweed is a type of coat fabric, but is often used for sewing skirts. Basically, these are strict office models that come complete with a jacket.

For a business lady, a tweed skirt is an excellent option, but girls rightly consider it heavy. For a bright winter wardrobe, bouclé tweed is suitable, from which straight skirts and A-line skirts are sewn.

Leather

Leather skirts look luxurious, noble and very stylish. Designers use matte, patent leather, as well as eco-leather, which in terms of characteristics is in no way inferior to its natural counterpart.

This season, tight-fitting skirts with a slit at the back, flared, and wraparound are trendy. Years made of matte leather look incredibly elegant. The trend is for combination products in which leather is combined with suede or lace. Evening options are replete with decorative elements - metal buckles, fringe, zippers.

Corduroy

Undeservedly consigned to oblivion for many years, corduroy is today making a triumphant return to fashion catwalks. Not only jackets and trousers are made from it, but also skirts, which look very stylish and unique.

A long skirt is an excellent option for every day, since corduroy is not only very warm, but also light, soft, and durable. The most popular model this season is the flared button-down.

Knitted

In the wake of the popularity of the handmade style, knitted products are becoming increasingly in demand. A warm floor-length skirt in a coarse rustic knit will reliably warm you up in the cold, and a flirty openwork model with frills will decorate your wardrobe.

Gabardine

Products made from gabardine look formal and elegant, therefore, like tweed, they are mainly used for sewing classic straight models. The material does not wrinkle, does not shrink and is very easy to care for. In addition, it has good air permeability. Since gabardine holds its shape well, it is also suitable for sewing circle skirts.

Knitted

Knitted skirts can be worn both in winter and summer, depending on the density of the texture. Warm models, as a rule, have a lining that protects the product from deformation.

Popular knitwear models: straight, with a slit, flared. Floor-length pleated skirts look original.

What to wear with a denim midi skirt

All styles of midi skirts are suitable for slender girls - a-line, pencil, godet, straight , tapered, sun, asymmetry . Plus-size girls usually choose A-line skirts, as well as pencil, wrap or pleated models.

In the spring and summer of 2021, fashionistas combine denim skirts with denim shirts, plain tops, and T-shirts. For autumn and winter 2021-2022: midi denim skirt + knitted sweater + high heeled boots. The most fashionable combination of 2021-2022: denim skirt + trendy jacket or blazer.
