How to remove puffs on a down jacket?

Types of damage

The choice of repair technique depends on what kind of damage has occurred on the fabric, because hole is different from hole. The options could be:

  1. Burnt hole. It can appear after touching the fabric of a cigarette, or a sudden spark from a fire (winter barbecue, for example). Such damage is characterized by the fact that the hole has a rounded shape and burnt edges. It is unlikely that it will be possible to sew it up so that it is unnoticeable, so they usually get around the situation with the help of patches, appliqués, and finishing accessories.
  2. Smooth cut. This happens when the fabric is accidentally cut with a sharp object. Such damage is easiest to eliminate. Usually they are sealed, evenly connecting the edges of the cut. If everything is done carefully, the hole will not be noticeable at all.
  3. Holes and cuts, with torn or frayed edges. These occur in places where the fabric is constantly creased when wearing a down jacket for a long time. Or you got caught on some nail. The result is a hole with jagged edges. Here you will have to work a little more. Depending on the shape and size of the damage, you can sew it up, try gluing it, or cover it with a patch, embroidery, or appliqué.

Hole with jagged edges

Repairing a down jacket with your own hands will take a little longer if there is a hole with uneven edges. The hole can only be repaired using a patch:

  1. Trim the uneven edges of the hole to make them even.
  2. Remove frayed threads.
  3. Remove excess fluff (the easiest way to do this is with ordinary tape - fluff sticks to it perfectly).
  4. Cut a patch that is slightly larger than the hole.
  5. Apply glue to the edges of the patch.
  6. Let the glue dry a little.
  7. Push the patch into the hole.
  8. Glue it from the inside and straighten it.
  9. Press the parts with a heavy object on top.
  10. Leave the glue to dry - this will take about six hours.

Important! Apply glue to the front side of the patch.

Sealing the damage

As we wrote above, the repair technique depends on the extent of the damage and the fabric from which the down jacket is made. If you need to fill a hole in a down jacket with smooth edges, you can glue it together and make it almost invisible using the following methods.

Using non-woven fabric

For this you will need:

  • adhesive interlining;
  • iron;
  • gauze.

Important! Choose adhesive interlining in a color closer to your fabric. Take white for light fabric, and black for dark fabric, because they are most often found on sale, although you can also find colored non-woven fabric. In any case, it is unlikely that you will be able to match the color of the down jacket. There is no need for this. If you do everything carefully, the interlining will not be visible.

The procedure for repairing a down jacket:

  1. Measure and cut the interlining flap. It should be larger in size than the hole, that is, extend beyond the edges by 2-3 cm. It is recommended to moisten this flap a little before work.
  2. Place the patch into the hole and place it with the adhesive side facing the back of the fabric.
  3. Smooth the flap so that it completely covers the hole.
  4. Heat up the iron.
  5. Place the down jacket on a flat surface, level the fabric, and connect the edges of the cut.
  6. Cover the fabric with gauze and press it on top with an iron. Apply the iron exactly, and do not move it from side to side, otherwise the interlining may move or stick unevenly. Then the fabric around the hole will lie in waves.

Important! Be careful with fusible fabrics, bologna for example. Do not heat the iron to maximum and place several layers of gauze on the fabric.

Seal without interlining

How to repair a hole in a down jacket if the edges of the hole do not meet exactly? You can glue a patch of the same fabric on top. But this, of course, is provided that you have this patch. Usually, conscientious manufacturers include a set of patches and spare buttons with their product. This small bag with such a repair kit does not need to be thrown away.

What you will need:

  • A patch from a down jacket repair kit or a piece of fabric similar in color and texture;
  • Glue suitable for fabric, for example, “Moment. Crystal".

Important! You can use other glue. The main criterion is that it must be transparent, otherwise stains may remain on the fabric around the patch. So “Moment 88” glue is also suitable for fabric, but it has a yellowish tint, so you need to be extremely careful while working. It is advisable not to use “Secunda” glue (also known as super glue) based on cyanoacrylate; it will make natural fabric dense and rough, and will simply burn through synthetics.

How to fix a hole in a down jacket with your own hands:

  1. Give the patch the desired shape and size. It should completely cover the damage and extend at least a centimeter and a half beyond the edges.
  2. Lubricate the patch from the inside with glue and apply it to the hole. Make sure the fabric lies flat.
  3. Next, follow the instructions indicated on the glue (how much to press, how long to wait for drying, and so on). Usually they press it down with something heavier and wait a day for the glue to dry completely.

You can do it differently. If the edges of the hole do not meet, then the patch can be placed from the inside:

  1. Take a piece of fabric, the same as a down jacket, its size should exceed the hole.
  2. Lubricate the area around the hole with glue from the inside, insert the patch inside, level it and press it to the fabric of the down jacket.
  3. Press down and wait for it to dry. Make sure that the glue does not leak onto the front side; wipe off excess before the glue dries.

Important! Please note that gluing the patch from the inside out requires a little more dexterity and dexterity.

Methods for repairing Bolognese products

Bologna is an artificial fabric thickened with a rubberized material, which was invented by the Italian engineer Giulio Natta. Such products have poor strength and quite often receive various damages:

  • rupture or cut due to external mechanical force (for example, under the armpit);
  • a hole if you burn your jacket with cigarettes or other hot objects;
  • hooks of different sizes.

To prevent damage from being visible, use:

  • iron;
  • a small piece of natural fabric;
  • polyethylene;
  • patch;
  • acetone for degreasing the surface of the material;
  • Super glue.

Installing the patch

The most common method of repairing damage is to seal the hole in the down jacket. The method involves applying a special fabric, leather or rubber patch to the tear or burn. You need to choose a piece in accordance with the size of the hole and the color scheme of the clothing. To make the final result look beautiful, you need to know how to properly sew up a hole in a down jacket:

  1. Turn the clothes inside out and place them on a flat surface.
  2. Using acetone or gasoline, degrease the damaged area. This procedure is necessary so that the fabric can attach to the surface of the material.
  3. Apply a thin layer of superglue from any brand to the prepared patch.
  4. Carefully and evenly connect the parts of the gap together and make sure that no stretches or wrinkles form.
  5. Place the patch with glue on the tear site and place a small press on top of it for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Turn the product back out and evaluate the result of the work.

You can purchase patches for your jacket in any hardware department. The type of material must be chosen depending on the material and what threads the down jacket is sewn with. For children, it is better to use bright and cartoon versions of patches; for adults, leather or fabric patches in classic colors look more organic.

Use of polyethylene and non-woven fabric

You can iron the jacket along with the patch. For this method you need to take polyethylene or non-woven tape, as well as a small piece of fabric that is similar in color, gauze or natural material. To correct the defect correctly, you must follow the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Turn the jacket inside out and lay it out on a flat surface.
  2. Open the lining from the inside to make it easier to get to the damaged area.
  3. Cut out a small piece from polyethylene or non-woven fabric, and also prepare a slightly larger piece of fabric with a similar color to the main product.
  4. Carefully connect the edges of the hole together and carefully ensure that this does not cause any folds or stretches on the surface. Most often, irregularities appear on the sleeve.
  5. Attach a piece of polyethylene or non-woven fabric from the inside to the connected edges of the tear, after which it must be well leveled.
  6. You need to lay a prepared piece of fabric on top of the polyethylene.
  7. The entire area should be covered with gauze or natural material and the area should be ironed thoroughly.
  8. After the procedure, the lining can be carefully sewn and the jacket turned inside out.

Repairing a polyester jacket is possible with your own hands using high temperature exposure. Polyethylene or non-woven fabric (tape made of dry glue) melts and securely fastens a previously prepared piece of fabric at the site of damage.

Elimination of the burnt area

Burnt spots on a Bolognese jacket can appear for various reasons: contact with a cigarette, an open fire, or simply a hot device. Effective ways to seal a down jacket with your own hands at home if there is a cut or burn on it:

  1. Repairing the damaged area using decorative fittings. Often this method is used if the clothes already have any patterns, rivets and other elements. In this case, you can repair the jacket with any embroidery.
  2. If the burn was received on the front bottom or top of the clothing, it can be disguised using a patch pocket, which should be carefully sewn onto the jacket along the seam.
  3. The simplest method for eliminating this type of problem is to attach a fabric, silicone or leather patch to the burnt area. To increase the strength of such a patch, it can be fixed not only from the outside, but also from the inside.

If the situation requires it, the patch can be sewn on the other side of the garment. This is done so that the appearance of the product looks harmonious, and the attached flap does not stand out from the overall image.

Repairing a hole along the seam

If a hole in a synthetic down jacket appears as a result of a break in the threads at the seam, then it needs to be sewn up. If this place is inconspicuous, under a sleeve, for example, then you can put a seam on the front part.

To work you need:

  1. Fine needle;
  2. Thread to match the fabric.

The recommendations below will help you do everything firmly and neatly:

  • Try to make small stitches, grabbing the very edge of the fabric on both sides of the hole.
  • If the seam comes apart in a visible place, then you will have to put in more effort. The seam needs to be repaired from the inside, but you can’t reach it because the lining is in the way. Therefore, you will have to rip the lining a little in front of the problem area. Now, from the inside out, make stitches repeating those that were there (if a large section of the seam has come apart, it will be faster to sew it on a machine). After repairing the front part, carefully sew the lining.
  • If the hole is located next to the seam, then you can sew decorative braid along all the seams. Its width should be slightly wider than the hole to completely cover it. This will complement the clothes in an original way.

Applique and masking of holes with fittings

If the damage to the fabric is large and cannot be sewn up unnoticed, then it is worth covering it with decorative trim. It could be an applique.

For work you will need:

  1. A scrap of suitable color and texture (to match the fabric of the down jacket). Make sure that the flap does not fade. Otherwise, during precipitation, stains may appear on clothes.
  2. Threads to match.
  3. Tailor's and small scissors.

Important! First, think about the shape of the applique, draw it on a piece of paper, and choose the right size. The theme of the applique should correspond to the style of the jacket and, of course, the age of its owner:

  • For sportswear, you can take the appropriate patch (there are a lot of ready-made patches with sports logos and brands in sewing stores).
  • For a children's down jacket, you can choose ready-made store-bought appliques in the form of cartoon characters or animals, although you can make the applique yourself.
  • The most universal are geometric shapes and nature themes.

A few helpful tips will help you repair a hole in your down jacket so that it becomes not only wearable, but also takes on a new look:

  1. When you have selected the applique, pin it to the desired area and carefully sew along the edge to the main fabric.
  2. If the figured patch has to be placed in a non-standard place, that is, where it will look awkward alone, then sew a second one symmetrically on the other side of the jacket.
  3. If you cannot maintain symmetry, then simply randomly sew several appliqués throughout the down jacket. Not only will you disguise the hole, but you will also turn the jacket into a designer garment.
  4. Small holes, for example, from sparks or those burned by a cigarette, can be covered with decorative fittings: rivets, spikes, rhinestones, buttons, etc.

Important! If you do not have special tools for fastening the fittings, then purchase the necessary fittings and contact a specialist. Very often such services are provided in sewing studios.
