What to do if the stain is fresh
Fresh stains are easier to remove than old ones. The sooner you start cleaning, the more likely it is that there will be no marks left on the fabric.
How to remove fresh paint from a jacket:
- Grind the laundry soap using a grater.
- Dilute the soap with warm water to a paste.
- Soak your toothbrush in the mixture.
- Remove the stain with a toothbrush.
Wash the jacket according to the instructions on the label.
The technique is suitable for fresh stains that appeared a few hours ago. Once the paint has time to dry and soak into the fabric, it will be more difficult to wash off.
Tar soap
Tar or laundry soap, which is sold in any supermarket, will help remove fresh stains. Moisten the paint mark with water, rub it with a bar, and leave to soak for 2 hours. After this, rinse, repeat the steps 2-3 more times, scrub the stain with a carpet brush or a stiff sponge.
Next, put the item in the washing machine, add a stain remover like Sarma, Domestos or Vanish. Fill the second compartment, in which the powder should be located, with baking soda in the amount of 100 g. Turn on intensive washing, dry the product away from direct sunlight.
Removing old stains
You can remove old paint from a jacket using the following procedure:
- Soak the item for 2 hours. Add a cleaning agent to the water: vegetable oil, alcohol or another substance (the choice depends on the type of fabric).
- Take out the clothes and apply the cleaning product directly to the stained area. At this stage, you can use harsher solvents: acetone, white spirit, gasoline.
- Scrub the stain with a toothbrush or shoe brush (depending on the area of the stain).
- Wash your clothes by hand. When washing, pay attention to the location of the stain.
To remove paint from a leather jacket, use a soft-bristled brush. Horsehair is best. For suede, use a rubber or nylon brush. A down jacket made of synthetic fabric can be washed with a regular sponge.
White Spirit
This solvent can be purchased at any hardware store. It perfectly removes all types of paints: oil, alkyd, acrylic. White spirit does not affect the color or strength of the fabric.
How to remove paint from a jacket with white spirit:
- Place the clothing on a flat surface.
- Place paper towels under the stained area.
- Soak a cotton pad with white spirit.
- Place the disc on the stained area for 10-15 minutes.
- Soak a cotton swab with solvent.
- Carefully remove any remaining dye.
- Wash your clothes with conditioner.
The only drawback of white spirit is its strong, unpleasant odor. After finishing working with the solvent, thoroughly ventilate the room.
Gasoline, turpentine, kerosene
These substances perfectly remove fresh and old paint stains. Apply a little gasoline, kerosene or turpentine to the dirt. Wait 10 minutes for the solvent to take effect. Remove any remaining stain with a cotton pad or soft-bristle brush.
To remove the paint, you can use improvised means
When choosing how to remove oil paint from a jacket, take turpentine. It removes oil paint better than other cleaners. But turpentine is not suitable for every fabric. Leather clothing should not be treated with aggressive solvents.
To remove old stains, you can use a mixture of kerosene, gasoline and turpentine, taken in equal proportions.
Medical alcohol
To remove fresh stains, use undiluted rubbing alcohol. But it copes poorly with old stains. Before applying alcohol to the fabric, you can heat it to a temperature of 30-35C. This will speed up the chemical reaction process.
To remove a stain, place an alcohol-soaked cloth over it. Leave it on your clothes for 15 minutes. Gently clean the stained area and rinse the area under cold water. At the final stage, wash your outerwear in the washing machine.
Laundry soap and baking soda
These substances are suitable for removing water-based paints. Rub the damaged area with baking soda or soap with laundry soap. Leave the substance on clothing for 30 minutes. Use a brush to clean the dirty area. Rinse clothes under cold water and machine wash.
To remove difficult stains, you can use the mixture. Add 5 tablespoons of soda and soap shavings to 1 liter of boiling water. Add water and boil outerwear in a large container for 15 minutes. Leave the jacket to soak until the water cools down. Treat the damaged area with a brush. Rinse the clothes and wash them in the machine.
Dishwashing liquid
You can remove fresh stains from water-based, oil, watercolor and acrylic paints with regular dishwashing liquid. Remove the top layer of paint with a sharp blade. Mix 1 tablespoon of product and 200 ml of warm water. Treat the painted area. Wash your clothes with conditioner.
Vegetable oil
Sunflower or corn oil is suitable for cleaning contaminants. It can be used when working with any type of fabric. To enhance the effect, you can mix vegetable oil with baking soda in a ratio of 1:3.
The oil is applied with a cotton pad or swab. Brushes are not recommended. Fresh dirt can be cleaned immediately, but old dirt needs to be soaked. To soak, place a paper towel soaked in oil on the stain. After removing the stain, wash the clothes.
Chlorine
The method is designed to remove paint stains from white or very light-colored items. For the most part, chlorine-containing preparations are used to treat cotton and linen; the fibers of these fabrics are more wear-resistant.
To remove dirt, buy Perrox or Belizna at a hardware store and pour 80 ml. drug into an aluminum bucket, add 6 liters of water. Place the container on the stove, boil the solution, and send the product there. Boil for 30 minutes, constantly “drowning” the item with tongs so that it does not float.
After this period, take out the clothes and put them in the washing machine. Set the “Heavily soiled laundry” function, add bleaching gel to the special compartment. After turning off the timer, hang the product to dry on the balcony, avoid direct ultraviolet radiation.
Choosing a product for different materials
Before you start cleaning, check how the chosen product acts on the fabric. All substances on the list can behave differently even on tissues of the same type. The degree of exposure depends on the chemical composition of the fabric, its color and other factors.
To test how to remove paint from a jacket, apply a small amount of solvent or cleaner to the leather or fabric. Apply the composition to an inconspicuous area. For example, in the armpit area. Check the result after 1 hour. If the fabric has retained its color and density, you can use a cleaning agent.
Leather clothing: natural or artificial
Before cleaning, check the label information. Faux leather may be indistinguishable in appearance from genuine leather. But these two materials have different chemical compositions. When choosing what and how to remove paint from a leather jacket, take into account the characteristics of the material.
Genuine Leather
Genuine leather is very sensitive to solvents. You can remove paint from a leather jacket with vegetable oil. Use a cotton swab to remove the stain. Wipe the dirty area with a swab. Remove any remaining vegetable oil with a solution of laundry soap.
Leatherette
Some leatherettes may be sensitive to solvents, just like natural leather. The standard method for removing paint from a leather jacket is suitable for them: vegetable oil. Use aggressive solvents only after testing on an inconspicuous area of the fabric.
Bolognese fabric
Do not use grease-containing solvents on bologna jackets. Alcohol is suitable for cleaning Bologna fabric. You can also remove stains from water-soluble paint with laundry soap. You can use a cotton swab, toothbrush, or dish sponge to clean stains.
Polyester
Stains from synthetic fabrics, including polyester, can be removed with heated alcohol. But do not bring the alcohol to a boil. After spot-treating the stained area, wash the jacket in the washing machine. To remove dye residue, mix washing powder with salt in a 1:1 ratio.
There is another cleaning method for polyester clothes. Prepare the cleaning mixture according to the recipe:
- A tablespoon of acetic acid.
- A tablespoon of any dishwashing liquid.
- 145 grams of washing powder.
- Half a liter of water.
Apply the resulting mixture to the stain. Carefully treat the stained area with a toothbrush. Wash your outerwear in the washing machine.
Turpentine
As a rule, the product is used to remove paint stains from silk and other delicate materials. The composition can be used on wool, cotton, linen, but the procedure will need to be carried out several times. Do not be discouraged if the result is unsatisfactory.
To carry out treatment with turpentine, you must first shake out the product and scrape off any possible dirt. Next, soak a cotton swab in the mixture, treat the stain from the back and front sides, and leave for 10 minutes. There is no need to press hard, light driving movements are enough. Otherwise, the paint will penetrate even more into the fibers of the product.
After the allotted time has passed, take several paper towels, place them on both sides of the stain, and squeeze with your palms. After this, wipe the stain again with a cosmetic disc soaked in turpentine, wait 45-60 minutes. Then put the product in the machine or wash it by hand.
If the stain is partially removed, cover it with unscented baby powder. Place a landscape sheet on the surface and go over it with an iron. Change the paper as it becomes dirty and complete the treatment with another wash.
Features of cleansing depending on color
When choosing how to remove paint from a jacket, consider the color of the fabric. The colors are well absorbed into light fabrics. Incorrectly selected solvents leave yellow and gray stains on white clothes.
White
You need to wash the paint off your white jacket as soon as possible. To prevent the stain from remaining on clothing forever, use a mixture of white clay and purified gasoline:
- Mix the components in a 1:1 ratio.
- Apply the resulting mixture to the area of contamination.
- Wait 4 hours.
- Treat the stained area with a brush.
- Wash your outerwear.
A white suede jacket can be cleaned with another mixture. To prepare it, take half a teaspoon of soda, 110 grams of heated milk with a fat content of 1.5-2.5%, 15 grams of turpentine and magnesia. Treat the stained area with a brush and wash the clothes.
Black
You can remove paint from a black leather jacket with laundry soap or acetone. If the contamination is severe, you can use purified gasoline or turpentine. But first you need to conduct a test on inconspicuous areas of clothing.
Black items cannot be washed with medical alcohol, soda, or bleach. These solvents will cause color loss in the stained area of the fabric.
What to do if the type of dye is unknown
If you don’t know how to remove paint from a jacket, use a universal recipe. It is suitable for removing most dyes:
- Remove some of the paint with a razor blade if it is not yet dry.
- Soak clothes in cold water and laundry soap.
- Wipe the stained area with a solvent selected according to the color and type of fabric.
- Rinse clothes under cold water.
- Wash the item according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Secrets of neat cleaning
You can wipe the paint off the jacket without putting too much pressure on the fabric. The harder you apply pressure to the brush, the deeper the paint penetrates into the fibers. Use smooth sliding movements to clean. Excessive pressure may cause color loss or holes in the fabric. Rub the stain from the edges to the center. By moving the brush from the center to the edges, you increase the area of contamination.
Do not use boiling water for soaking, cleaning and washing. Most fabrics used to make outerwear lose their shape at high temperatures.
When working with any solvents, wear household gloves to protect your hands. After working with strong-smelling substances, be sure to ventilate the room.
