How to clean mink, knitted and other hats at home

With the onset of cold weather, some people buy new hats, others take out old ones, and worn items are not always kept in excellent condition. It is useful to know how to wash a woolen hat and clean a mink hat at home, because the wear and appearance of hats depends on how well they are taken care of. Some of them can simply be washed in a washing machine, but with some products, for example, made of fur, this cannot be done.

Ways and means

There are several reliable ways to remove dirt from fur products at home. Regardless of what kind of fur your hat is made of, cleaning it is quite simple. If there are no difficult old stains on the headdress, you can easily refresh a mouton, mink, raccoon or arctic fox hat.

There are two ways to clean a fur hat: mechanical and chemical. First, carefully examine the surface of the product and determine what type of cleaning the fur needs. If there are lumps of dirt, other contaminants, or tangled hairs, which is typical for fur with long pile (Arctic fox, raccoon, fox), you first need to carry out mechanical cleaning.

To do this, you need to use a special fur brush with stiff bristles. If the fur has fluff, for example, like that of the Arctic fox, a small amount of cotton wool is wrapped around the brush. This prevents hairs from being pulled out and allows for better cleaning of the product. This makes it easier to comb out lumps and other dirt.

To clean a mouton hat and other hats with short thick fur from dust at home, you can use the following method. You need to wet the gauze with water and squeeze it well. Then cover the hat with gauze and pat the underside with your hand. Dust accumulated in the pile will come out and settle on the damp fabric.

Then comb the mouton cap thoroughly with a special brush. To add shine, you can treat the fur with a 3% vinegar solution. Soak a cotton swab in it and walk over the surface of the headdress.

After you have superficially cleaned the hat, you can begin to remove stains and also clean the lining of the product. This can be done at home using simple folk remedies:

  • shampoo and other mild detergents;
  • salt and ammonia;
  • vinegar solution;
  • starch, talc;
  • hydrogen peroxide;
  • gasoline.

Wet cleaning

You can remove dirt from a fur hat not only using the dry method, but also using wet cleaning. By following the rules of the procedure, you can return the product to its attractive appearance without harming the lint.

Do I need to soak?

The headdress should not be completely soaked or machine washed. There is no need to wet the fur (the base of the fur made from genuine leather). The product may become deformed and shrink in size. It will be impossible to restore the item to its original form.

Shampoo is the most common means for cleaning mink hats from dirt. Sequencing:

  • mix about 50 ml of shampoo without conditioners and other additives or detergent composition for wool and delicate fabrics with 2 liters of water until a large foam forms;
  • apply it with a cloth or foam sponge to the pile, carefully process it from the base to the side elements of the product (the foam should cover the fur part completely);
  • after the foam absorbs dirt, it is necessary to remove its remains with a clean, dry cloth;
  • The product should be dried away from heating appliances and other heat sources.

You can also get rid of contaminants using ordinary table salt. Should be dissolved 1 tbsp. l. product in 1 tbsp. water, pour in a few tablespoons of alcohol. Then you need to moisten a soft brush or sponge in the composition and treat the contaminated areas. Drying should be done naturally. You can remove stains from fur with table vinegar.

If greasy stains have formed on the cap, you should use aviation gasoline and starch. Both components should be mixed until a paste is formed, then rub it into the greasy areas of the pile. After waiting some time until the gasoline evaporates, you need to carefully knock out the cap to remove starch particles.

Cleansing using traditional methods

To clean a fur hat at home, you can use regular shampoo or other liquid detergent. Detergents for washing wool products are well suited for this purpose.

Dissolve a little shampoo in a container of warm water until foam forms. Take a sponge and apply soap suds to it. Gently handle the fur of the hat with light movements. Then rinse off any remaining foam with a sponge soaked in clean water.

Processing must be carried out carefully so that water does not get on the base of the product. If the hat gets wet through, it may become deformed and lose its shape.

You can clean a fur product at home from dirt using salt and alcohol. Dissolve 80 g of salt in 200 ml of water. Pour 2 tablespoons of alcohol there. Stir the solution until the salt is completely dissolved and soak a cotton swab in it. With light movements, walk over the entire surface of the hat, removing dirt.

A solution of ammonia with hydrogen peroxide removes dirty substances from the surface of fur well. Mix a teaspoon of peroxide with a glass of warm water. Add a few drops of ammonia and stir. Apply the product to the product using a swab or spray bottle. After complete drying, comb the fur well.

Greasy and old stains from a fur hat can be removed by preparing a mixture of gasoline and potato starch. Pour a little gasoline into the container with starch to make a mushy mass. Then apply the mixture to the stain. Wait a while until the mixture dries. After this, shake the product and remove any remaining product.

A mouton hat can be removed from shiny and worn areas at home by treating it with gasoline. To do this, soak a cotton swab in gasoline and lightly wipe the problem areas with it. To remove the gasoline smell after treatment, you can sprinkle these areas with starch. Lightly rub the powder into the pile, wait until it dries, then shake and comb the fur.

Fur items require proper storage and care conditions

Basic rules here:

  1. Fur coats should be hung flat on hangers
  2. In the warm season, it would be good to put hats on blanks (for example, a cardboard cylinder of a suitable diameter, close to the size of the head) so that they do not become deformed, there are no creases, etc. It is better to store hats in ventilated boxes, like hats, but not in plastic bags
  3. Never dry on a radiator or store near heating devices.
  4. During storage, branches of fragrant geranium, tobacco or citrus fruit peels will help protect fur from moths.
  5. It is ideal to store or transport fur products in special “breathable” covers. A snow-white shade of an initially white item (fur coat or hat) will help preserve the blue color of the case
  6. Ironing, of course, is prohibited, even the lining
  7. Do not use chemicals containing chlorine for cleaning
  8. To protect the lint on the sleeve cuffs and collar from abrasion, it is recommended to wear silk scarves around the neck and muffs on the arms.
  9. Do not leave fur coats and hats in the light for a long time, especially in the open sun, as light-colored items can acquire a yellow tint over time, while dark-colored items fade quickly.

Methods for cleaning fur products

To remove tangles (clumps of matted wool) and other types of mechanical contaminants at home, you can use abrasive materials available to everyone: semolina, bran, talc or starch.

They are able to level and polish the texture of the product, do not stick and are easily removed. One of the listed products is poured into a frying pan for slight heating. Then they rub it into the pile (again, without fanaticism), shake it off or clean it off the surface with a soft brush.

Another effective method from this series is the use of sawdust (you can buy, for example, in the pet department). The sawdust is first moistened and soaked in a small portion of alcohol. Then they apply it to the contaminated surface, give it time to absorb the dirt, and shake it off. The only caveat is to make sure, at least by smell, that the sawdust is not from coniferous trees containing resin. Otherwise, there will be a risk of not cleaning the product with them, but rather getting dirty.

For removing stains of grease, paint, etc. they use gentle chemicals, which, in addition to cleansing, are designed to help restore the silkiness of the fur to the touch, increase the strength, flexibility and elasticity of the skin under the pile. Let's take a closer look at these methods.

Method 1.

Let's say there is a need to soften and restore the former elasticity of the skin under the fur. To begin with, lightly trim the seams at the lining of the product so that there is access to the interior.

The flesh is slightly moistened with a “cocktail” of 1 tablespoon of water, 1 tablespoon of vinegar essence and ½ spoon of salt. The wet material is pulled very carefully in all directions. Vinegar will also help in cases where the pile has lost its shape and shine. It is necessary to wipe the surface of the fur, without exposing its base, with a cloth moistened with the solution.

Method 2.

If the flesh has hardened as a result of thoughtless drying using heating devices, you can wipe it with alcohol or vodka diluted with water.

Method 3.

To soften, for example, a leather item upholstered with fur, glycerin water is well suited. Its use will prevent the base of the collar from hardening, and will give the collar pile a silky appearance and feel.

Method 4.

Dissolve a small amount of shampoo for washing pets in warm water, moisten a regular sponge in this solution and clean the fur without much effort. After this procedure, simply blot the wool with a cotton cloth or dry napkin. This is a particularly effective method for products made from arctic fox, fox, and silver fox.

Method 5.

A mixture of water and gasoline taken in equal proportions effectively removes grease stains. Contaminated areas are also wiped with a sponge soaked in the solution, and then with wet wipes.

Method 6.

You can try to clean problem areas (stains from grease, sweat) with the following composition: water, ammonia, transparent dishwashing gel. Everything is taken in equal parts. After cleaning with a sponge soaked in this solution, the pile is again blotted with a napkin.

Method 7.

Or this solution for the previous problem. Mix ammonia (1 teaspoon) with salt (3 teaspoons) and water (5 teaspoons). Using a sponge soaked in the mixture, treat the stain from grease or sweat.

Method 8.

A mixture made from starch and gasoline will help remove yellowness on light-colored items, as well as stains from foundation on the fold of the collar. The ingredients are mixed until creamy, scooped onto a sponge or brush and treated the contaminated area.

Then they dry it. This cleaning method is effective even on old dirt or hardened stains. Gasoline scrubs, and starch absorbs dirt. After this procedure, shake the product well, and the stain will be removed along with the starch. And the smell of gasoline will disappear after drying in the open air.

IMPORTANT!

To eliminate the smell of gasoline, you should not spray perfume on a light-colored item. Yellow spots will remain!

Method 9.

How to clean mink fur at home? A mixture of water, alcohol (including ethyl) and vinegar mixed in equal proportions will help to scrub products made from mink fur, as well as rabbit, goat, and wolf fur. After cleaning, wash off the fur coat or boots decorated with fur parts with a sponge soaked in warm water.

Method 10.

Items made from the skins of waterfowl (muskrat, beaver) can be easily cleaned with dry river sand. It must be sprinkled on the product and removed with a brush along with any dirt.

Method 11.

Following the previous example, rabbit fur is effectively cleaned with wheat bran.

Method 12.

In most cases, the scribble will return to its original appearance after strong shaking. It is more rational to store astrakhan products in the future by stuffing them with paper or fabric material in order to prevent loss of shape. To clean astrakhan fur, river sand, rye flour, bran or semolina are used. But after using them, they require more thorough shaking than in the case of other straightened bellows.

Method 13.

Oil paint stains can be easily removed with sunflower oil. Using a piece of cloth or a sponge soaked in oil, carefully wipe the stained area against the growth of the lint. Rinse off with a damp cloth.

Method 14.

Acetone or white spirit will help remove marks from a ballpoint pen. Add a drop of lemon juice to warm water to rinse off to eliminate the unpleasant odor.

Method 15.

Rubbing alcohol will remove traces of lipstick or other makeup. Clean with a soaked cotton pad.

Method 16.

The fur has turned yellow, how can I clean it?

A mixture of a spoonful of salt and 1/2 spoonful of ammonia dissolved in water will help to remove yellowness from even white items. Hydrogen peroxide gives the same whitening effect.

A damp cotton pad is moistened with the chosen product and the fur is wiped. Bran is also effective against yellowness; it is slightly heated in a frying pan, applied to the product and shaken off after a while.

IMPORTANT!

Comb the fur only in the direction of hair growth, otherwise it may break out.

After cleaning an item made of natural fur using one of the methods listed above, shake the item thoroughly, straighten and smooth the pile with your hand, and wear the updated item of clothing carefully and with pleasure.

How to clean faux fur at home?

This material is not as vulnerable and demanding to care for as natural fur, and yet care in relation to it is not canceled. If stains appear, it is more rational to clean the product immediately, without delaying it, since otherwise the material may become deformed.

IMPORTANT!

Acetone and vinegar should not be used to clean faux fur from dirt.

Cleaning light-colored hats

If your fur hat is a light or white shade, it will develop a yellowish tint over time. Mouton, mink, and white fox caps can be removed from yellow plaque at home using folk remedies. A proven effective method is to clean white fur with potato starch or talcum powder. These substances perfectly absorb dirt and clean the pile.

Apply the powder to the entire surface of the headdress and rub it into the pile. Wait a few minutes, then shake the product well. Tap the back of the product with your hand to dislodge any remaining powder. Finally, comb the fur with a brush.

You can also return the snow-white hue to your headdress by using hydrogen peroxide. Dilute it with water in proportions 2:1. Wet a cotton swab with this mixture and carefully treat the surface of the pile with it. Hydrogen peroxide will remove the yellowish coating and refresh the appearance of the cap.

Remember that the fur product should be dried only naturally without the use of electrical appliances. Exposure to heat will damage the headdress.

Refresh the mouton after long storage

Preventative cleaning of a mouton fur coat is carried out if the item is not dirty from wear, but, for example, has been hanging in the dressing room for a certain time and has become dusty and worn out.

The use of chemicals in this case is not at all necessary; you can refresh it in the following ways:

  • Having taken out the fur coat, you need to shake it thoroughly, which will allow you to straighten and fluff the fur, or, after hanging it on a hanger, carefully beat it with a carpet beater;
  • Alternatively, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a clean attachment, turn it on at the lowest power and sweep over the fur coat several times;
  • If you have an animal brush with iron bristles, you can comb the fur item in the direction of the pile;
  • One of the ways is to hang the fur coat in the loosest position, covering it with a slightly damp cloth, which needs to be moistened in a solution of water and vinegar, without knocking it out too much with your hand. All dust will remain on the damp cloth.

Getting rid of dirt and dust with dry cleaning

Dry cleaning is intended to quickly rid a fur item of dirt or when there is no time or opportunity to dry the item.

This method is suitable if contamination does not mean greasy stains or stains from viscous liquids. And the main pollution is street dirt.

You can clean your mouton fur coat at home using a special comb when the dirt has dried.

A special brush for cleaning fur coats also has natural fur on the working surface, so the fur fibers on the fur coat are not pulled out or damaged.

Consequently, to get rid of dust, this procedure can be repeated an unlimited number of times, and the product will have a well-groomed appearance.

How to clean a mouton fur coat with special products

If there is a fear of damaging the fur of a fur coat, you can use special products to clean it, which are available in a wide range on the market.

You can purchase them at specialized retail outlets that sell things made from lint or at household chemical stores.

Cosmetics for products made from pile do not contain aggressive chemical components and are able to clean:

  • general pollution;
  • food stains;
  • greasy;
  • heavily contaminated surface.

Today, manufacturers provide entire kits for the comprehensive care of fur items - all kinds of cleaners, deep foams, fur restorers, special brushes, combs, napkins, etc.

So the question: how to clean a mouton fur coat can be solved by an ordinary trip to the household chemicals store.

Useful tips

During the cleaning process, you should follow some recommendations:

  1. Make sure the product you choose is safe. Select a small area to treat. If the pile does not stick together, stops shining and does not change shade, you can clean the entire thing.
  2. Before handling the product, you should wear rubber gloves. If you use ammonia or gasoline, provide ventilation by opening windows to thoroughly ventilate the room. Do not keep the item near open sources of fire.
  3. When it comes to using a washing machine to clean faux fur, you first need to think about the possible consequences. Study the product label, find out what the manufacturer says about the possibility of such washing. You should not experiment with low-quality fur.

How to clean a mouton fur coat using folk remedies

Folk remedies for cleaning mouton fur coats include:

  • lather;
  • hydrogen peroxide;
  • alcohol;
  • acetic acid.

We use a soap solution

Soap solution is a fairly harmless and universal product that can be used to clean a Mouton fur coat at home. You can also make it from washing powder or soap.

The powder must be without bleach!

It is necessary to whip up a thick foam using a brush and treat the product. Next, the remaining foam is removed with a clean clothes brush, and the item is hung up to dry. It is highly not recommended to use any directed heat sources for this. The fur should dry naturally.

We use vinegar

This method is suitable for removing greasy fur, food stains and other contaminants. An ordinary brush is not enough here, but a mixture of vinegar and alcohol will be useful.

If the contamination is superficial

If dust appeared on the faux fur on a jacket or other item while it was in storage, it can be gotten rid of very easily. Take a clean, damp cotton sheet, place it nap-side down, lay the item on it and beat it out using a carpet beater. This way you can get rid of the dust that has accumulated between the fibers: it will remain on the damp surface.

If you knock out an item, but the dirt is still there, remove it using a soap solution. You need to proceed as follows:

  • The surface to be cleaned must be vertical. To do this, hang the fur on hangers.
  • Take a clear shampoo that does not contain any additional additives. 3 tablespoons will be enough. Dilute the shampoo in a liter of liquid, it should be warm. Beat the mixture with your hands: a fluffy foam should appear.
  • Using a brush, carefully apply the product to the surface. Water should not get on the base of the product.
  • If the item has medium or long pile, you should clean it in the direction of its growth. Low villi are processed in the opposite direction. Faux fur should only be cleaned this way - this rule can be called basic.
  • Remove excess foam using a damp cotton cloth. Squeeze it out first until it is almost dry.
  • To make the product drier, wipe it using a clean terry cloth. Then place it outside or in a well-ventilated area. The sun's rays should be prevented from shining on the item. Heaters should not be placed too close to the product.
  • When the pile dries, comb it using a metal comb. Its teeth should be sparse.

To make the fur collar fluffy and shiny, mix glycerin (one teaspoon), water (0.5 liters), ethyl alcohol (0.5 liters) and treat it with this mixture. Gently apply the mixture to the pile using a cotton swab or spray bottle.

Some useful tips

  • It is highly not recommended to clean mouton fur with undiluted vinegar or acetone.
  • If the fur coat is wet, you only need to sew it in a natural way. The use of electrical appliances will damage the fur, deform it and possibly discolor the product.
  • Spraying perfume on a mouton has a detrimental effect, along with hairspray.
  • You definitely cannot wash a fur coat in a washing machine.
  • After cleaning has been carried out in any way, the fur coat must be combed with a brush.
  • Unless absolutely necessary, you should not apply any kind of cleaning to a mouton fur coat.

Fur hats look very impressive and provide great warmth in the cold winter, but fluffy fur has a drawback. The thick pile, due to its texture, is like a brush collecting various contaminants. Dust settles between frequently located hairs. Snow, fog, wind, a humid and oversaturated atmosphere with exhaust gases - all this negatively affects the cleanliness of the fibers.

How to wash a fur hat yourself

Before water procedures, you should evaluate the condition of the product and determine whether it is possible to do without radical methods: it is possible that simple cleaning will return the dirty fur to its previous condition. Before washing, you will still have to clean the hat mechanically - especially if the long pile is filled with stuck lumps of dust and dirt, there are mini-tangles of hairs (this occurs in long-haired hats: foxes, arctic foxes, raccoons). Recommendations on how to clean your hat:

  1. For a hat with long pile and rich down (from mink, arctic fox), you will need a hard special brush for combing out fur products. Before cleaning the fur, wrap the brush a little with cotton so as not to pull out delicate hairs.
  2. A hat with short pile (mink, astrakhan fur, mouton, muskrat) is cleaned of simple dirt using damp gauze. Cover the entire fur surface with it and pat the inside of the product - dust and dirt particles will settle on the gauze.
  3. Yellowed light fur can be lightened again using talcum powder or potato starch. Gently but thoroughly rub the powder into the hairs, shake and lightly knock out from the inside out. Brush with a brush, removing the smallest remaining powder. You can also use hydrogen peroxide: dilute it with water 2:1 and carefully treat the pile with the solution using a cotton swab. The cap will turn white again.

Important! In the case of wet processing, it is required that the moisture does not wet the hat through to the base - otherwise the headdress may be unsightly deformed.

How to wash a fur hat at home if cleaning alone is not enough:

  • For a liter of warm water - 100 ml of alcohol and vinegar and 10 ml of rinse aid for woolen items. Treat the hat with the solution, using a brush or napkin and ironing the fur from bottom to top.
  • 80 g of salt and 2 tablespoons of alcohol per 200 ml of water, stir thoroughly, dissolving the salt. Treat the fur with a cotton swab.
  • A teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia in a glass of warm water. Apply the solution to the fur with a spray bottle or swab. Allow to dry completely and comb.
  • If there are greasy and old stains, prepare a paste of potato starch and gasoline. Lubricate the stain with this porridge. Wait until dry, shake, comb out any remaining mixture.

How to wash a mink knitted hat

Neatly knitted hats with stripes of mink fur are an elegant headdress for a respectable lady. He shouldn't be dirty, it will create a completely opposite impression of the lady. There are effective recommendations on how to wash a knitted mink hat so that it retains its elegant appearance.

Hands

You should first make sure that the product cannot be cleaned dry. You can try to clean it with semolina or ground bran. Apply one or the other to the pile, rub in carefully. Wait 7 minutes, shake and remove any residue with a brush. There is also a wet method - dilute mustard powder in water so as to obtain a paste, apply to the pile, wait up to 10 minutes, comb and remove the remaining crumbs (a clothes brush does this well), and dry.

Important! Mustard is only suitable for dark-colored furs.

If this does not help, the contamination is too significant - you need to know how to properly wash a knitted mink hat:

  • The same method as for washing other fur - 100 ml of alcohol and vinegar, 10 ml of wool rinse per liter of warm water. Apply with a sponge both along and against the pile. Do not wet the sponge too much so that the solution does not drain from it and soak the base.
  • The following solution will also be effective: a tablespoon of salt and three alcohol tinctures added to a glass of warm water. Apply with a brush in the same way as in the previous case.

Greasy stains can be removed with vinegar (you need to work with a cotton pad), and a successful remover of grease stains is purified gasoline in a small amount. Its sharp, unpleasant aroma will disappear in about half an hour.

Important! If the hat is sewn like a beret, you should stuff it with crumpled newspapers before wet processing - this way it will retain its shape.

In the washing machine

Experts in cleaning fur products have a unanimous opinion about whether it is possible to wash a fur (mink or other) hat in a machine - it is strictly not recommended. Machine washable only for faux fur hats, at no more than 800 spin speeds and in warm water. Use gel for cleaning woolen items as a detergent.

Removing stain

If you want to get rid of a dirty stain on faux fur, proceed as follows:

  • Prepare warm water (0.5 l), dissolve any washing powder in it (two tablespoons).
  • Gently rub the liquid into the product using a sponge. You need to move from the edges to the middle.
  • Use a sponge to remove dirt and detergent. If necessary, perform the procedure again.
  • Dry the item at room temperature.
  • When most of the dirt has been removed, wait until it dries and carefully remove using a brush.

If you can’t get rid of the dirty stain, remove it with gasoline:

  1. It must be cleaned, otherwise there will be stains on things. To check how pure the solvent is, drop it on the paper. It must dry. If a stain remains on the surface of a clean white sheet, gasoline should not be used.
  2. Dampen a clean cotton cloth or cotton swab with solvent. Wring out the material to ensure maximum dryness. Gently wipe the soiled fur with a swab to remove dirt. This is how cuffs and collars are cleaned.
  3. In some cases, purified gasoline and an absorbent agent are applied to the pile. Fat is removed using a solvent and absorbed using an absorbent. Gasoline is added to the absorbent agent.
  4. Apply the resulting semi-liquid mixture to the stain, leave it for a while, and let it dry.
  5. Then clean it off using a brush.

How to wash fur hats with shampoo

To wash a fur hat, dilute shampoo in a basin and whip up the foam in the shower. Apply foam to the pile with a sponge without rubbing. Remove any remaining foam by thoroughly rinsing it in clean water and wrung out the sponge. Whether a mink hat with a knitted base can be washed with shampoo is indicated on the tag of these hats. Such exposure is quite acceptable if carried out occasionally and in water with a temperature not exceeding 30 ° C, using shampoo and conditioner. You cannot rub a wet hat harshly; you need to treat it like your own hair when washing your hair. Rinse with wool conditioner, do not wring, let the water drain on its own.

Important! After washing, you cannot dry fur hats using a hairdryer or heating devices, this will ruin the quality of the fur - it may become fragile and lose its natural shine. It is also highly undesirable to iron the pile and lining - the fur will become wrinkled and will not straighten out. The hat will dry perfectly naturally. To avoid deformation, it should be dried in a cool place, placed on the bottom of an empty glass jar (usually a three-liter jar).

To avoid household pollution, you need to put the hat away for the warm season - it is best to put it on a jar and put it in a closet. The storage place must be absolutely dry and dark (natural furs tend to fade). It is necessary to ensure that the pile is not crushed during storage and that sufficient ventilation is provided: the fur wants to “breathe”. It is necessary to protect the product from moths.

Storage rules

Improper storage is one of the main reasons for the appearance of dirt on the cap. Helpful Tips:

  • store the item wrapped in cotton cloth along with moth repellent;
  • periodically check the condition of the headgear during storage;
  • do not allow a damp environment in the closet or chest of drawers where the hat is located, ventilate the furniture frequently;
  • Avoid exposing the stored product to the sun.

You can clean a mink hat at home using either dry or wet cleaning. Getting rid of local contaminants and unpleasant odors is also not difficult if you follow all the cleaning recommendations and properly prepare for the procedure.
