Curtains with Velcro: types, ideas, methods of fastening, how to sew them yourself

Advantages

Velcro curtains are suitable for creating a laconic design. The popularity of the Velcro fastening method is explained by the combination of the classic look of the canvas and convenient operation without the use of a curtain rod.

Velcro curtains have a number of advantages:

  • serve for a long time, Velcro does not lose its quality after washing;
  • easy installation, a frame without a cornice is used;
  • take up little space, use minimal space;
  • convenient to remove, wash and attach with Velcro;
  • there is a wide choice among models (Roman, Austrian, roller blinds, curtains with loops);
  • dry and iron quickly.

How to attach a curtain to a window?

You can attach curtains with Velcro directly to the window frame, to the wall or to the rail, but the essence of the fastening remains the same; hooks and rings are also not used.

Installation on a plastic window

Velcro fastening to a plastic window does not violate the integrity of the window. Velcro is glued around the perimeter of the window, or only on the top and sides.

On the wall

When attaching to a wall, the hard part of the Velcro is fixed with screws or glue, and the soft part is sewn to the wrong side of the curtain.

On a wooden plank

The adhesive tape is attached to the wooden slats using glue or a stapler. The rail itself is attached to the wall with self-tapping screws.

Kinds

Velcro curtains are most often short; they are most often presented on the market in a modern form.

Roman

Curtains with light folds and an opening mechanism are suitable for any interior and room. If each window has a different curtain length, the room will look unusual.

Japanese

Curtains look like fixed panels and are suitable not only for oriental style. Due to tension and weighting from below, the canvas retains its shape and will not move from the wind.

Rolled

Most often used to emphasize minimalism. Suitable for balcony, loggia. It is better to attach them to the window under each sash separately.

Installation Guide

On hinges

Curtains with Velcro loops are similar to regular curtains; they are attached to a curtain rod, but to remove them you do not need to remove the curtain rod, just undo the Velcro.

We take proper care

The rules for caring for curtains with a sticky backing depend primarily on the base fabric:

  • you can clean them using a sponge and a soap solution prepared from non-aggressive detergents;
  • convenient to use a vacuum cleaner;
  • The fabrics must be hung to dry.

On a note. Lightly but frequently wiping dust from the textile base of the curtain will protect the adhesive tape from rapid failure.

Choice of material and color

The fabric should not be heavy, this is the main condition. Therefore, lightweight natural or synthetic material is suitable.

For a balcony, it is best to use a fabric mixed with polyester or organza, because it does not fade in the sun and dries quickly.

Natural fabrics include linen, cotton, jacquard, satin and bamboo, which are impregnated with a special dirt-repellent mixture.

When choosing a fabric color, it is important to maintain a consistent style. They can be neutral beige, white, pastel colors, or bright colors, with inserts or patterns. Different windows in the same room can be decorated with different colors. They can be combined with wallpaper, repeat its design, or be plain.

Photos in the interior

Velcro curtains can be sheer or thick, depending on the fabric chosen. They darken the room better because there is no free space between the curtain and the window.

Balcony or loggia

Velcro curtains are often used to cover windows on balconies and loggias. This is a convenient and economical way to hide a room from sunlight and views from the street through the rational use of material. A curtain with Velcro is a convenient option for decorating a door to a balcony, since there is no cornice or hanging fabric above it, the curtain does not touch the curtain when leaving and the passage remains free.

Kitchen

Velcro curtains are suitable for the kitchen if the window is located above the sink or stove, and also if the window sill will be actively used as a shelf or an additional workplace.

Children's

Velcro curtains made of thick fabric are suitable for the nursery; this will ensure a sound daytime sleep for the child.

Living room

In the living room, ordinary curtains or tulle can be supplemented with curtains that are attached to the window frame with Velcro. Japanese Velcro curtains will look good in a small living room.

Bedroom

For the bedroom, translucent Roman blinds with Velcro or thick ones with a jacquard pattern are suitable. The uniqueness of such curtains is that they fit any bedroom style.

What types of curtains and curtains are there?

The convenience of this method allows you to use different types of curtains to decorate windows and openings, and the final result depends only on your imagination. Capable of changing any room, making it visually larger or smaller, brightening or creating a gloomy atmosphere, they are always the finishing touch to the composition. The most popular and beautiful types to use are Roman, Japanese and roller blinds.

What are Roman blinds and how to use them

Easy to handle, long used and suitable for any occasion, smooth when closed, when open they form beautiful waves, drawing the eye to the window. They can be the main accent in a minimalist or high-tech style, the main thing is to choose the right fabric.

Roman blinds with Velcro have the following qualities:

  1. Take up minimal space.
  2. Thick fabrics are suitable for sewing.
  3. Unlike the classic version, they can be easily removed for replacement.
  4. Ease of preparation and installation.
  5. Using adhesive tape for curtains to cover the entire window area.

Making Roman curtains yourself takes longer than installing curtain rods.
To create, you need canvas, Velcro, weights, tailor's tape, several rings and a cord 2.5-3 times longer than the future curtain. A little work - and the new decorative element will be ready. Of course, you can buy ready-to-install curtains or regular ones and sew a ribbon to them, but you must remember that the cord must slide freely. What are the advantages of Japanese curtains?

Japanese curtains are a mixture of traditional Asian paper partitions and French curtains. They are used not only as curtains for the balcony, with Velcro, but also for decorating rooms, to divide the room into separate zones. By choosing a translucent material with a barely visible oriental-style pattern, you can create airiness and lightness even in the smallest or darkest room.

It’s easy to create such curtains; just sew Velcro along the edges. But you will have to spend time on the cornice: you need to create strips that will move along the guides. The hard part of the tape is glued to them. After this, they begin to design and install guides for future partitions.

Indoor installation will require the ability to handle a drill, screws, and iron strips. Often, when it is not possible to sink the structure into the floor, but in order to avoid stumbling, only the upper part is created, and weighting bars are inserted into the fabric from below. This method is more complicated than the previous one, but gives more opportunities to play with space. And depending on the chosen pattern, the same room can evoke a different mood, reminiscent of something ultra-modern or ethnic.

Installing guides and frames for a plastic window is an extraordinary task; you either need to create a complex structure yourself, on which adhesive tape is placed, which is difficult to do on plastic, or order it from professionals. After preparing the guides, you can hang the curtains with Velcro on the plastic window. If you are not sure that the window will remain undamaged and you want to get a neat and inconspicuous design, you should contact a window manufacturing company. She will manufacture and install a frame from a special profile used in mosquito nets.

When are roller curtains used?

Roller blinds, or roller blinds, are sheets of fabric that are rolled up from above with compact rollers and affect the interior only due to the color or pattern of the fabric. They are used when in a bright room you need to add bright, clean touches that do not change their effect depending on the position of the curtains.

The advantages that roller blinds provide:

  • the ability to open and close the window without changing the position of the curtains if they are attached to the window sash;
  • There are roller blinds both manually controlled and with electric motors, allowing you to change the position remotely;
  • occupy a minimum of space, leaving the window sill open and accessible for implementing design solutions or home gardening;
  • ease of use and the ability to quickly open the window without much manipulation;
  • An easy and intuitive way to install on a window.

Due to the lightness of roller shutters, which do not exceed 1.5 kg, self-adhesive tape allows you to attach them to the window itself, and not to the frame. Thanks to this, it is possible to open the window without changing the lighting, which is very helpful in the summer if the room faces south. Most often, this solution is suitable for a balcony (to create a dark, cozy corner).

How to sew curtains with Velcro

Fabric consumption is individual, depending on the size of the window and the selected fabric.

Materials and tools:

  • textile,
  • Velcro tape,
  • sewing machine,
  • scissors,
  • ruler.

Operating procedure

  1. Take measurements of the window. For a four-leaf window 265 cm wide, you need to make 4 curtains, each 66 cm wide (264/4), where 1 cm is subtracted from the total width of the window. The height is measured with a Velcro allowance of 2.5 cm at the top and bottom. For a window height of 160 cm, add 5 cm.

  1. For each curtain you need to sew 4 ties from the same or a different fabric. For one tie you need to take a piece 10 cm wide and curtain height + 5 cm. The bottom of the tie is sewn.

  1. Then fold the tie in half and sew along the length from the inside out.

  1. Turn it inside out, fold the seam allowances on the long side and stitch. Iron all ties. You can also make ties from lace or bobbin ribbon.

  1. Cut the curtains to size, taking into account side allowances of 2 cm on each side and a bottom allowance of +1 cm. Fold the sides of the curtain, then the bottom of the curtain using the soft part of the Velcro so that it is on the wrong side.

  1. Pin soft Velcro to the top of the curtain on the front side, 1 cm away from the top. Measure 7 cm from the edge of the curtain on both sides and place one tie under the Velcro at the bottom. Sew.

  1. Fold the Velcro to the wrong side and stitch, adding 1 tie at a time. The curtain is ready.

  1. Degrease with a product (alcohol, nail polish remover) the place on the frame where the hard part of the Velcro will be glued. For convenience, you can cut the Velcro into pieces and glue them end to end.

  1. To fix the bottom of the curtain, it is enough to use hard Velcro around the edges.

Using the ties, you can lower and raise the curtains, you can also make a pocket at the bottom for the slats, then the Austrian curtains will turn into Japanese ones.

When the curtains are attached with Velcro to the frame, they will protect the house from insects and will not come off in the wind thanks to the lower Velcro fastening. Such curtains are easy to remove and wash, they have an aesthetic appearance from the inside and outside.

Making Roman blinds with a lambrequin with your own hands

So, the option has been chosen. All that remains is to purchase fabric and related tools. These include:

  • Suitable Velcro. Textile, requiring sewing or self-adhesive. The last option is suitable for strengthening curtains for a balcony with Velcro, without a cornice. There is no need to install holders or damage the wooden frame or metal-plastic.
  • Sewing accessories – scissors, thread, tape measure + sewing machine. If you have no experience, neat hand stitches on the curtains will make the work invisible.
  • Actually, the fabric itself. Narrow strips for forming folds, decorative rings, cords, eyes for them.
  • Cornice in the form of a processed wooden block. It is covered with the same fabric as for curtains, then neatness will be observed and the wood will not be discordant with the overall appearance. You can attach Velcro for curtains to it in advance.

It is important to choose fittings - tiebacks for lambrequins, a decorative mechanism for opening and closing roller blinds, etc.
